I.O.U.

Life has been crazy lately — busy, busy, busy!!!   I owe blog posts about the Family 4th Celebration in Sanford this weekend – it was a GRAND time!  Also – I have seen two movies recently – My Sister’s Keeper last weekend and The Proposal today.  I need to get reviews posted….but not tonight!  Sorry – I will say that I enjoyed both movies, but the details will need to wait until I’ve had some sleep!  No new renovation updates – we took the weekend off!

Good night!!!

Just trying to stay cool…

Man, it was HOT in Sanford this weekend!  It hit 100 degrees on Saturday and is supposed to be in the high 90s again today!  The preference would be to just crank up the air conditioning and hibernate!  But, with weekend adventures and Father’s Day thoughts, there is still a lot to write about…

I had a yard sale on Saturday!  The weather predictions earlier in the week talked about thunderstorms!  But, it ended up being even worse — no thunderstorms, but it was sunny and 100 degrees!!!  I could have had a garage sale, instead of a yard sale, if it had rained…..but there was no getting out of that heat!!  Right from 5:00 am when I first started setting out my junk – er, ah, I mean items that I don’t necessarily want anymore, but may just be the one thing someone else has always wanted – it was muggy and got me all sweaty.  And it got hotter from there!  I ended up having a great yard sale – made $220 – but I also ended up with a sunburn and a very sore, tired body!!  The girls weren’t much interested in going out yesterday, either!  I had them out for a while, but it was just too hot for them out there….  So, the afternoon was spent in the air conditioning, napping with the girls, and trying to stay cool….

Today is supposed to be in the high 90s, but it is windy, so it doesn’t feel as bad as it did at this time yesterday.  I have been outside watering plants (I think yesterday’s heat killed one of my hanging plants – hope a drink will bring it back) and watching the girls run around the yard and play in their pool!  It was actually quite pleasant being outside and enjoying the morning!

I had a blast watching the girls play this morning – they were a RIOT!!  I was letting their pool fill while I did some work around the patio.  They were running around chasing each other and playing really hard, like usual…..they would jump in and out of the pool in their chases and sometimes stop to root around in the water and then get back to their wild chase!!!

Amy has perfected the “leap over the pool” stunt — she runs full speed dead at the pool and just as she gets to it, she leaps up in the air far above the pool and jumps completely over it at the widest point (this is NOT a small pool – it is the largest of the plastic kiddie pools from WalMart) and clears the jump without touching the water or the edges of the pool at all!!!!  It is amazing!!!!

Then, at one point, they had rooted around in the pool and ended up turning the hose nozzle so that it was spraying up like a fountain — Katie and Megan cautiously watched it and got up close, but backed off when it sprayed in their faces — not Amy, she went bonkers on it!!!  She bit at the fountain and barked at it and lunged at it and just went crazy!!!  THEN, she grabbed the handle and pulled it up out of the water and shook it – the hook on the handle released and the water shut off!!!  She threw it down and backed up just a little and held her head up high and looked around at me, Megan, and Katie with her chest all puffed up and you could just tell she was as proud as she could be — “I killed the pool monster – the evil water serpent is dead!!!”  It was so funny!!!

Today – June 21st – is special for three reasons:

  • It is the first day of summer and the longest day of the year (summer solstice) – a fact I didn’t consider when I set my candlelight wedding ceremony on June 21, 1985.  We were married in a historical cobblestone church and planned to use the kerosene lamps and candles to illuminate the church during the ceremony!  BUT – as it turned out, the sun was still shining bright at the time and the lamps and candles were barely noticeable…..I will forever remember that June 21st is the longest day of the year!!!
  • It is Father’s Day – I used to love Father’s Day, as I do all holidays!  As I grew up, my Grandfather was the willing recipient of my Father’s Day wishes and handmade greeting cards!  Then, Charlie – my Poppie – came into my life and I had TWO wonderful father figures to lavish my appreciation on!  Now, both are gone – I have had 10 Father’s Days without Charlie and 11 without my Grandpa!  I quietly think of them on Father’s Day, as I do every day, and try to not think about how I no longer have anyone to fuss over on this very special day!

Grandpa (3)     Charlie (6)

  • It would have been my 24th wedding anniversary!  On June 21, 1985, I married my best friend and we moved to Sanford, NC to make a life together.  The marriage didn’t work, but the friendship flourished and we are still a very important part of each other’s lives!  Although we do not technically celebrate our wedding anniversary, we do rejoice in a long and happy relationship!  It all worked out, but I still get a little sad on June 21st each year….

Right now, I am watching two really ugly bugs with weird looking legs try to maneuver themselves around on the screen outside the window beside my computer desk!  Glad they are outside!

 As Porky Pig used to say…..Th-th-th-th-th-th-th-that’s all folks!!!

The Hidden Treasures (a.k.a. Junk)…

Garage TreasuresI have spent a lot of time in my garage over the last two days.  Renovating to increase the organization and look is one of the items on my wish list of things to work on this summer.  But, first – it had to be cleaned out!

Let me start from the beginning…

I have never lived in a house with a garage!  Well, that’s not totally true – two homes I lived in had garages, but neither were used as garages!  Both my Grandparents and my Mom had garages in the back yard that were used as work shops and for lawn equipment storage.  So, when I began to shop for a house to purchase, one of the items on my list of priority features to look for was an attached garage!  I was happy that two of my top three choices had attached garages!  There were several things that “sold” me on this house and one of the major ones was the garage!

Most garages in homes that I looked at – including the other one in my top three – weren’t finished off inside.  This one was finished off with drywall, paint, several electrical outlets on each wall and phone jacks on two walls!  Very nice!  In particular, I have really enjoyed the benefits of having a phone in the garage — do you know how great it is to not have to rush to unlock the door and get in the house with an armload of grocery bags to answer a phone that is ringing just as I’m getting home?  AND – it even saved the day one time when I got out in the garage to get in my car and head out to work and realized I had just locked my purse (with cell phone in it) AND keys in the house – I was able to call Ronald at work and he came over with his house key to let me in!!!  (it’s the simple things that make the world so special)  It is a one car size with an electric door opener.  What more could I ask for????

I soon found, however, that my house didn’t have enough storage space in it!  So, despite an attempt to provide organized storage with shelving units and boxes with drawers, the garage ended up being a place where everything that didn’t have a place got stashed!  The shelving units got full and held more weight than they were designed to hold and things that couldn’t go on the shelves were stacked (albeit neatly) on the floor!

Back to the present:

This weekend was devoted to hauling out and sorting through all the stuff that has accumulated in the garage over the years!  Of course, we picked an incredibly HOT weekend to do this!  The garage has phone jacks, but no air conditioning!  ha-ha-ha

I was amazed at what I found out there — both in the actual amount of stuff that was stored and in what I learned about myself!  Apparently, I am an impulse buyer…..I found bags of stuff I bought thinking that I would use it someday, but there it sat – still in the bags – unopened and unused!  In some cases I didn’t even remember buying it or why in the world I thought I needed it!  I even found stuff that I obviously didn’t remember buying because there were TWO purchases of the same thing – both still in the bags – unopened and unused – but on different shelves!  Oy vey!!!

We hauled two truck loads (not as bad as it sounds – it was a small pick up) with things that were given to friends/relatives or to be discarded (I also discovered that I am an empty box horder – there were lots and lots of empty boxes stored “in case I need to ship something”).  What is left will either be put back after the planned renovations because it is needed/used or will go in a yard sale that I am planning for next weekend — my junk could be your treasure!!!  ha-ha

Planned Renovations:

The shelving units were a good idea, but didn’t provide all the organization options I obviously need!  So — we will be putting peg board on two walls (maybe three walls – not sure, yet) that will allow for things like ladders, yard tools, extension cords, rolls of tape, and some tools to be hung up on the walls.  I will keep two shelving units for boxes and things that can go on a shelf.  And we’re putting in an overhead shelf that will store large seasonal items – like the Christmas tree and decorations!  We’re also going to paint the walls and peg board to match the paint theme inside the house and put a nice epoxy coating on the floor!

Next Steps:

Yard sale on Saturday — anything that is put in the yard sale pile that doesn’t sell will be discarded or donated and will NOT return to the garage!  Pressure wash the entire garage to prep it for the painting and floor coating.  Then we’re moving on to the inside painting to take advantage of some things that are going on that will create a perfect window of opportunity to get a majority of the inside painting done!  Then we’ll finish the garage!

YIPPEE!!!!

How they found me…

welcome to my blogI usually get a chuckle or two when I look at my blog’s stats page and see what search terms bring people to my blog.  I wonder what they were expecting to find on the web when they plugged in the search term and if what they found in my blog fulfilled that expectation.  I sometimes wonder what in the world I wrote that would make my blog show up on a search list based on the term as it was written…(like the times I found “ugly girls in Sanford” and “naked lawn dancers at night” in the list of search terms used to find me)…ha-ha-ha!

So – in case you were wondering what brings people to my blog (I know it is a burning topic on most of your minds), here are some of the search terms from the last seven days:

  • Several with “Dames At Sea”, “Peggy Taphorn”, or some variation of the current Temple Theatre show
    • hope my review encouraged them to go!!!
  • A lot of people are searching for info on Dogwood Trees – in particular ones “without blooms”, “before they are fully blossomed”, and “June snow dogwoods”
  • A few about tomato plants – including “early girl tomato plants” and “tomato plants with white spots”
    • don’t look to me for gardening advice – I am a notorious plant murderer!!!
  • “Joe Jon Bryant blog Sanford NC”
    • someone’s looking for you, Joe Jon!!!
  • “80s hairstyles white walls”
    • hhhmm – multi tasking search term, if I ever saw one
  • “dream driving in bad part of town”
    • wonder if they found comfort that they are not the only one dreaming about driving in a bad part of town – also wonder if their dream was the same as mine
  • “strict aunts”
  • “joe and kim in sanford”
    • who’s joe???
  • “what colors go with terracotta in living room”
  • Some about “angels” – including “sad angels” and “angels in heaven”
  • “thomas english camera”
    • sorry – no posts about “thomas english cameras”, but I hope they enjoyed my opinions on “thomas’ english muffins”
  • I almost always find a search term about something in Sanford or Albion – this time they included:  “Angies Breakfast Barn”, “Temple Theatre”, and “Mount Albion Cemetery Tower”
  • I even had one from someone looking for “yankee profit”

So – there you have it!!!

Words for Wednesday

blog therapistJust some quick mid-week thoughts….  I love having this blog to “unload” my thoughts on people who pop in to see what I have written!  This graphic says it all:  “I don’t need a therapist – I have an online journal”!  Ha-ha — you all are my therapists!!!  Just send me your bills……

The Appetizer for today’s “food for thought”:

There are three movies that are coming out soon that I am getting excited about:

top_theproposal  The Proposal – Release date:  June 19th

top_mysisterskeeper  My Sister’s Keeper – Release date:  June 26th

julieandjulia_bigposter  Julie and Julia – Release date:  August 7th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And now for the Main Course….
Other thoughts:
  • I’m so excited to see Lindsay and Amycoming back to their blogs!!!  I’m anxious to hear all about the list of topics Amy is planning for us!!!
  • The girls have totally stopped eating furniture and tearing up pillows and other things!!!  No new damage since before Christmas!!!  Whew!!!  Took them long enough!!!  ha-ha
  • The Magnolias are in bloom all over town and my Gardenia bushes are covered with beautiful white blossoms!!!  So lovely!!!  Can’t wait for the Crape Myrtles to bloom!
  • I planned to go to Myra’s for dinner tonight, but wasn’t feeling so good today, so I ended up changing my mind and having a Lean Cuisine instead!
  • Speaking of not feeling well – I laid down to take a nap to try to shake off a migraine and dreamed that I woke up to find that my friend had come in while I was napping and completely finished all the renovations we have planned for the garage and shed and it all looked so great and organized!!!  BUT – he whacked the button for the garage door and it was stuck in the open position and there was no way to close it anymore!!!  Strange dreams……
  • Speaking of the renovations on the house — we’re going to start with the garage this weekend!  I still have a patchwork quilt look on my kitchen wall – gotta get the primer out and cover it up so the new paint doesn’t bleed through!  I’m excited about getting started with it all!
  • The new season of Top Chef starts on Bravo tonight – but it is a “Masters” edition!  It will be nice to see how the Masters compete with each other, but it sorta defeats the intent of the show……I’m still sure I’ll enjoy it, though!
  • David Carradine — hhmm — turns out that his death is sorta like getting caught in an accident with dirty, holey underwear — not something you want the world to know about!!!
  • I was sorry to hear about the explosion in Garner yesterday, but was more than a little irritated that they preempted the entire hour of All My Children (maybe longer, but that’s all I had on tape) with interviews of people saying they didn’t have any details to share at this time and a lot of speculation…..come on – wait until you know something and then report it on the 6:00 news – a quick break in to make the announcement or a news runner at the bottom of the screen would have been good, too!
That’s it for now….Looking forward to the weekend!
What a lovely day!
It was such a nice day today and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it!  Let me tell you all about what made it so special.
First:  The rain that was predicted for today didn’t happen!  It got a little cloudy a couple of times and looks like it might rain tonight, but during the time I was out and about, I was able to ride around with the top down!  The sky was a beautiful blue with huge, fluffy white clouds and the temperature hovered right around the 70 degree mark!  PERFECT!
I started the day out doing one of my most favorite things – playing with the girls!
Then, I headed out….
First stop was the Grand Opening at The Painted Petal Art Design Studio.  What a lovely little shop Lisa Orlando has!  Lots of great ideas for decorating and she holds classes, too!  I’m planning to have her come see what ideas she has for some hand painted accents around the house after I get done with all the painting I am planning to do.  The other part of the Grand Opening was Lisa’s daughter’s business – Ashley Wicker has opened a Massage Studio there, as well.  She was giving free chair massages, so I definitely took advantage of that!!!
I then went to have lunch at the Steele Street Coffee and Wine Bar!  I’ve only been there a couple of times and both were for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and both were very enjoyable experiences!  I had a glass of red wine with the flavors of blackberries, blueberries, some other berries, and a hint of chocolate — amazing!!!  I should have written down the name of it – I knew I’d forget it!!  I also had a cup of Maryland Style Crab Soup – a clear tomato based broth with lots of veggies – I didn’t see any crab, but it had a very nice distinct crab flavor – yummy!  The sandwich I chose was the Oriental Wrap – grilled chicken breast, shredded carrots, lettuce, cabbage, crispy oriental noodles, and a ginger sauce — delicious!  And they put some fresh strawberries, blueberries, and cantaloupe on the plate, too!  I took a Mango Tropics (blend of mango, pineapple, and banana) smoothie with me to sip as I went about the rest of my business!  Perfect lunch!
I went to Added Accents to get a birthday gift for a friend and then headed to Lowes.  My friend is coming over tomorrow to measure the garage and kitchen to get supplies for some of the work we’re going to do on the house.  So, I wanted to go to Lowes and decide on the wainscoting and chair rail molding I want so I’m not wasting his time trying to make up my mind!  I picked out the perfect wainscoting for the kitchen and absolutely fell in love with a beautiful chair rail molding!!!  It has a leafy vine through the middle of it – striking!!  So – the kitchen will be a nice light wood wainscoting on the bottom half, the terra cotta paint on the top half, and this beautiful chair rail molding painted one of the colors I’m using in the living room to pull it all together (not sure whether I’ll use the wall color or the trim color – I’ll have to wait to see which one looks best with the wainscoting)!
I went ahead and bought the chair rail molding – they only had three pieces of it and I loved it so much that I was sure it would be just my luck to go back tomorrow and find they sold them!!!  I bought all three – I’m fairly sure I’ll only need two, but I didn’t want to risk it!  I can always use it for something else or take it back, if I don’t need the third one!
When I got home, I found out that I was all set to send out info for an on-line Thirty-One party I am hosting!  I’m doing it on-line cause my house is gonna be all tore up for a while during all the renovations I’m starting!  Check out the end of this post for more info, if you’re interested!
For dinner, I put a pork roast in the oven and it came out sooooooo good!!!  I out did myself!  It was tasty, moist, tender, and made the house smell amazing!!  I roasted carrots and onions with it and they made the perfect sides!
I am now capping off the evening with a nice cup of tea – Egyptian Chamomile with Delicate Apple!  YUM!  Life is good!!
I sleep, therefore I dream
I had a restless night last night – first, I couldn’t get to sleep until about 2:30 am and then when I did finally get to sleep, it was riddled with strange dreams that kept waking me up!  Here’s the one that sticks out and I have the clearest memory of….
I was in a mountain setting – an area with a lot of trees, trails, and cabins on the side of a mountain.  It seemed like I must have lived there – everyone seemed to know me and I walked around with authority and an understanding of where everything was and how to get there.  I was at a general store type place, engaged in small talk with the owners and customers.  A strange young girl came in all dressed in white chiffon with long curly blond hair and no coat or shoes – I commented to the people I was talking with that she must not be from around here cause she doesn’t know enough to put on a coat and shoes when there is 3 feet of snow on the ground!  We all laughed about her.  There was also a guy that sort of lingered around at the entrance door like he was waiting for her – he was also all dressed in white, but he did have a light jacket on and was also wearing big, clunky, brown work boots.  She picked up a few things and came to the register to pay – she didn’t look up or make any eye contact and didn’t speak at all – not even to acknowledge the “hellos” that were offered by me and several others.  The couple left.  I told the others that I had to get up to the house and  left myself.  I walked up the trail to a small cabin that was full of people.  On my way up to the cabin, I saw the strange lady again – this time she was walking off the path across the woods with the man laying behind her holding onto her ankles – she seemed to float along in the deep snow as she dragged him behind her – still not wearing any coat or shoes.  I called out to her to see if she needed any help, but she didn’t respond or look my way.  I got to the cabin and asked if my mother was there, yet – no one answered me, so I looked around and didn’t see her anywhere.  I told them that I saw her in a vision on the way up the mountain and that she was dragging a man in the snow and that I was worried about her.  One person looked at me and said that I should stop listening to my visions and participate in the real world.  So, I left to go look for her.  I came up on another cabin and there were also a lot of people there.  They were standing in line to give something to a man sitting in a very high chair.  As I got closer, I saw that they were giving him money and that he was the strange man I saw in the general store and again being dragged by the lady.  He looked at me and asked me what I was doing there – he said “if you’re going to bore me with another one of you silly visions, you need to just turn around and go home!”  I climbed up the side of his chair and told him that I needed to speak with him and he better come right now, if he knows what’s good for him!  He came down and we walked over to the side away from the crowd!  I told him that I knew he did something with my mother and he was going to pay for it!!  I knocked him down, sat on him, and began to punch him over and over in the face – I said that should show him that he needs to fear me!  As I was hitting him, I noticed that my watch had a text message, so I peaked at it between whacks – it was from him – apparently, he was texting me while I was hitting him and the text said “you are no one to fear – you aren’t even touching me!”.  I got up and he laughed and asked if I had fun and if it made me feel better.  I stormed off and went to another cabin.  The inside of this cabin was the oval office of the White House!  I found myself sitting with a group of people talking to President Obama – I told him about what had happened to me that day and it made him and everyone break out in big robust laughter!  So, I laughed too, like I had meant it to be a joke – then I said “they all must have been Republicans”, which made everyone laugh again!  Then, President Obama got up and broke out in a jazzy song and dance routine to entertain the crowd – I remarked to the person next to me that I can’t believe he is still giving impromptu performances now that he’s President!
I woke up wondering what in the world prompted any part of that dream!!!
You asked for it…
Earlier today I asked my Facebook friends to post topics – any topics – and I would find something to write about each one!  I only got a few, so far, but here they are….and my attempt to do the topics justice!  If I get more topics, I’ll post a “part 2” another day!
# 1 – Requested by a friend from high school:  HAIR
This is a big topic — especially if I relate it to the 70s or 80s when hair was big and long!!!  Every decade had a unique style for lady’s hair.
1920’s brought us short bobs with finger waves!  It was a rip roaring decade of bootlegged whiskey and flapper girls!  Classic actresses like Clara Bow, Mary Pickford, Lillian Gish, and Marion Davies set the stage for hair styles across the country!
1930’s began to bring glamour back into hairstyles.  The trend was still to have the deep finger waves, but styles began to soften more and be more feminine and full.  The movies had Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow, Carol Lombard, Faye Wray, and Marlene Dietrich defining the hair styles of the decade.
1940’s was the height of Hollywood glamour!  Long, lush curls took hair to an elegant level – actresses like Veronica Lake, Vivian Leigh, Katherine Hepburn, Rita Hayworth, and Susan Hayward were known for their hair!
1950’s was an era of elaborate and dressy styles – more youthful and flamboyant!  It was the decade of the Hollywood bombshell with actresses like Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Jayne Mansfield, and Kim Novak, and Bridgitte Bardot.  The fifties also brought us the pony tail, bobby sockers, and poodle skirts!
1960’s brought us the summer of love, peace, the British invasion, flower power and lots of variations on hair!   We had long hair, bubble cuts, shoulder length flips — but it was all usually teased as high as it could go!   Barbara Eden, Patty Duke, Elizabeth Montgomery, Jane Fonda, and Mary Tyler Moore were the look of the 60’s.  The 60’s also had Twiggy and others who brought us the short, pixie style cut.
1970’s focused mainly on long, sleek hair!  It is hard to find a yearbook in the 1970’s that didn’t have the majority of girls with very long, straight hair either parted down the middle with no bangs or with a full bang across the front!  I was among them!  I haven’t talked much about the guys, but this is one decade that I want to include them in — can you say Mohawk, boys and girls???  The actress most famous for her hair in the 70’s was Farrah Fawcett!!  But, let’s not forget Sissy Spacek in “Carrie” – she had the perfect high school hair for the 70’s.
1980’s was the BIG era — we thought the 60’s had big hair, but it could never compare to the 80’s!!!  The bigger, the better — high teased bangs that practically stood up by themselves!!  And, the worst hair style of all time was popular in the 80’s – the mullet!!!  Celebrities that set the style for hair in the 80’s include Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, Julia Roberts, Kathleen Turner, and Madonna.
From the 90’s to now, there hasn’t been any real standout, unique hair styles.  Women tend to wear what looks good on them and what they like – bobs and shorter styles are predominant, but long hair is just as stylish.
# 2 – Requested by another friend from high school:  My thoughts on a woman who thought Marley and Me was too sad, so she refused to get her child a dog so they won’t have to go through losing a pet.
First – I totally agree that Marley and Me was way too depressing and sad and I wished I hadn’t gone to see it on Christmas Day!!!  It was a good story, but way too depressing.
But on to my friend’s request — I really disagree with this woman!  Pets are wonderful parts of a child’s life!  They teach them love and responsibility and loyalty and so much more!  Yes, there is also a strong possibility that they will learn about death and losing a pet they have grown to love and be attached to.  But, even that makes for great learning experiences for a child!  What better way to bring up the discussions about life and death and heaven and to prepare them for the inevitable fact that they will have to go through losing loved ones over the years — it’s a fact of life!
If I had never had an animal in my life because of fear of the hurt involved in losing them, I would have missed out on so many wonderful relationships with four legged companions over the years!  Yeah – it hurts to lose them, but oh – having them here for as long as we have with them is so very much worth it!!!
# 3 – Requested by fellow blogger and ultimate smart alec Joe Jon:  My thoughts on Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle
Wow, Man, that’s heavy and, like, totally ironic, for sure!  Just last night a group of friends were sitting around dropping acid and we got into this very topic!  For real, man….it was like, wow, what do you think of that Uncertainty Principle thing that Heisenberg has going on????  The whole conversation blew my mind, man!!!
(before I go any further — the above paragraph was a fictional depiction for entertainment purposes only – if you are a current or future employer, please note that I do not now or ever have dropped acid……LOL)
Seriously — I didn’t have a clue what Joe Jon was talking about, so I looked it up!  If you want more information, there is a whole Wikipedia page on it (click here).  But, basically it is a quantum physics theory that states that  certain pairs of physical properties, like position and momentum, cannot both be known to arbitrary precision.  The mathematical formulation looks like this:
uncertainty principle
Since I am an absolute idiot when it comes to higher math, I have no opinion on the philosophical ramifications or related theorems in harmonic analysis……
But – after reading  a couple different web pages on it, I think I can simplify it down to the old adage – the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing!  LOL  Meaning, if you get to measure one thing with absolute certainty, the other thing you’re trying to measure becomes even less certain……I think…….hell, I don’t know!  LOL
All I can say is — thanks for the deep topic, Joe Jon!  You gave my brain a run for it’s money and I learned something new!!!  But, wow, man, it was, like, totally heavy, dude!!!
So there you have it — three topics left on Facebook for me to write about — I hope I did each one some level of justice!!!
Eggs
eggsI love eggs!!!  I can eat them at every meal and never get bored with them!  BUT – I am very particular about my eggs – you might say I’m an egg snob!  I don’t want a runny white OR a hard yolk!  I don’t like them scrambled, unless there is no other choice or I can’t have toast with them.  And I don’t want “stuff” on my eggs — why drown a perfectly good egg with something that is going to totally mask the delicious flavor?  So, no ketchup, Texas Pete, cheese, hollandaise sauce, or other junk on my eggs, please (except for omelets – that’s a different story!)!!!
In restaurants I order them “over easy”….that usually gives me a nice solid white and a nice runny yolk to dunk my toast in!  Yep, I’m a toast dunker – so report me to the proper eaters police!  I try to show good manners when I eat – I chew with my mouth closed, I don’t talk with my mouth full, I don’t sop up my plate with my bread (well, except for when I’m eating eggs, that is), and I ensure the risk of half the contents of my fork/spoon falling off in my lap is as low as possible (although I rarely leave a meal that I don’t discover a little something on the front of my shirt – what’s up with that – leftovers belong in the fridge, not on my clothes!), etc……but I do love to dunk my toast in my eggs!  It is like a special privilege that I hold very dear and won’t apologize for!!!
Other ways I love eggs:  deviled eggs, egg salad, omelets, hard boiled (the white part only, though), fried egg sandwiches, and in things like macaroni and potato salad!
But my most favorite way to prepare eggs is to poach them!!!  I just had a plate of poached eggs on toast and it was an absolutely perfect breakfast!!!   Poached eggs are easy to prepare and they are usually easier to get done just the way you like them than when you fry them.  I take a small but deep frying pan, fill it with just enough water to just slightly cover the eggs and bring it to a boil on the stove.  Once the water is boiling nicely, I drop a couple eggs into the water – if I am cooking for multiple people, I do them separately – it is easier to get them just right if there is no more than 2-3 eggs in the pan at a time.  While they are cooking, I get the toast ready.  Once the water starts to boil up around the eggs good and they start to get solid, I like to loosen them from the bottom of the pan (I don’t know anyone else who does this, but I think it helps the process, so I do it) to let them float around in the boiling water!  I use a slotted spoon to lift them out of the water when they look like they are getting done – a jiggle them slightly on the spoon – if the white still jiggles, I lay them back in the water for a little bit longer!  The trick is to watch them closely and check them often to get them just right — otherwise, you can risk ending up with hard boiled eggs, instead!  When done, I place them on toast that is already prepared, buttered, and on the plate – one whole slice and one cut in half and placed on each side of the whole slice.  I sprinkle just a little salt and pepper on them and they are ready to go!!!
A similar way to prepare eggs and have them come out with the “poached” effect is to baste them!  You can baste an egg if you only have a grill and don’t have a pan that you can poach them in!  I learned this technique when I worked at Woolcott’s Dairy during my senior year in high school – it is pretty cool!  You get the grill hot enough so that when you sprinkle water droplets on it they sizzle.  Treat the grill with a light film of butter or oil so that the eggs won’t stick, but not enough to actually fry them (actually using something like Pam is even better because it doesn’t add any fat).  Put the eggs on the grill and then sprinkle pieces of crushed ice around them on the grill.  Cover the eggs with a lid and let them steam until they are done the way you want them!  The steam bastes the eggs just like poaching them does!  Some people claim that basting is done by cooking the eggs in extra butter and then spooning the hot butter over the top of the eggs, but that just sounds gross to me and adds cholesterol and fat to the eggs.  This is a much better way to cook them – they look appealing (the top gets a film over the yolk, even though you don’t flip them), they are easy (no flipping, so no risk of breaking the yolk) and they are a healthy way to cook them – no added fats at all!
Saturday At The Movies
movie nightI haven’t been to the movies in a while – nothing of much interest to me out right now that I haven’t already seen!  Saturday brought a spark of interest to two movies that I didn’t think I would care that much about – UP and Night At The Museum – Battle of the Smithsonian.  So – which one did I end up going to see????  BOTH!!!
I really needed a weekend full of entertainment and fun that would help me escape from what can only be described as a bad week……Friday night’s production of Dames At Sea at the Temple Theatre started it all off with a bang.  Then, to keep the momentum going, I looked for a movie at the Saturday matinee!  Over the past week, I started to find myself curious about UP and the Night At The Museum sequel.  I had passed them both over as “not interested”.
UP never made it to the “must see” list because the previews really don’t make it look very enticing.  Yes, it was a Pixar animation and they are almost always great, but there was nothing in the previews or write ups that gave me that “I gotta see this one” attitude!  But, this week I started seeing better write ups about it and hearing people talk about it and suddenly, I was thinking that this might be a good one to go see after all!
Night At The Museum wasn’t on the list because I never saw the first one and don’t particularly care for Ben Stiller’s comedy – he’s OK and I really liked him in Meet The Parents and Meet the Fockers, but for the most part, I’m not a fan!  But, I was flipping channels last week and came across the original Night At The Museum on cable and stopped to watch it — it was really funny and I saw why it was so popular when it was out!!!  Since I was hearing that the sequel was as good or better, I decided to consider giving it a shot!
So, Saturday morning, I sat down to decide which one I would spend my afternoon with…….the decision was UP!  But then, when that show ended and I started to leave, I thought “what the heck” and went back in to see Night At The Museum, too!!!
Here are my reviews:
up_smallposter2I LOVED THIS MOVIE!!!!  Just get that out of the way right up front!!!  And there is a bonus – you get two movies in one – the show starts with an adorable little short film about how storks get the babies they deliver from clouds who create the little bundles!  It was sweet and very funny!  What a treat!!!
The feature presentation was, of course, UP.  It was very well done with great animation – the main character, Carl Fredricksen, looked and acted so much like Spencer Tracy that I totally forgot he was animated!  And the little wilderness kid, Russell, was adorable!  But it was more than that……it starts out with Carl as a young child in total awe of a famous explorer and full of dreams of becoming an explorer when he grows up.  He meets a young girl his age with the same dreams!  It quickly scans through their life together – their friendship and their life long love for each other as man and wife.  When his wife dies, Carl becomes a reclusive old man who is mad at the world and feels like life has passed him by.  He regrets that other priorities in life kept them from fulfilling their joint dream of becoming explorers!  A series of events ends with him turning his house into an air balloon and he heads out on an adventure with an 8 year old Junior Wilderness Explorer named Russell.  Their experiences remind him of the important things in life and that life didn’t pass him by – that the life he shared with his one true love was just a different kind of wonderful adventure!  UP is a great story – touching, funny, and very well done!  I highly recommend it for all ages – the kids will love it and the adults will, too!  I rate this one a big A++!
nightatthemuseum2_smallposterIn contrast, Night At The Museum was a huge disappointment!  I wish I had just gone ahead and went home when UP was over.  I am thinking that maybe it wouldn’t have been so disappointing if I hadn’t just seen the original for the first time and it was still so fresh in my mind!  I don’t know, but it definitely didn’t live up to the hype for me!  The only scenes I snickered at were the ones I saw in the previews and those weren’t that funny because I’ve seen them over and over in commercials – it was just nice to see them in context!  I found myself dozing off a couple of times and a loud noise in the film would jolt me awake.  I really enjoyed Amy Adams as Amelia Earhart – she stole the show and nailed the role!!!  But the rest of the characters left a lot to be desired.  I was sad that Robin Williams’ Theodore Roosevelt was such a small part this time – he was one of the best characters in the original.  Since my interest was sparked solely on catching and enjoying the original last week, I came home and went back to read the Yahoo User Reviews to see if it was just me or what…..both critics and Yahoo Users (sorted by most recent reviews) seem to agree with me, for the most part.  Kids will probably like it, but I’m thinking most adults will find it falls short of the original.  So — my recommendation here is to wait for it to come out on Netflix or, better yet, on cable so you don’t even have to pay the rental fee!  I rate this one a C+, which is generous only because of Amy Adams’ character – she rocked!!!
See you at the movies!
