My bad — I have seen THREE movies in the last three weeks and haven’t written reviews on any of them!!! So — in an effort to catch up before I make it FOUR that I am behind on, here are reviews for My Sister’s Keeper, The Proposal, and Public Enemies (wow – talk about three very different movies!) – in the order I saw them (and, coincidentally, also in the order I ranked them):
First is My Sister’s Keeper. This movie stars Cameron Diaz as Sara Fitzgerald, a mother who discovers her two year old daughter, Kate, is going to die of cancer. Neither parent nor their son are matches for the treatments Kate needs to survive. On the off the record advice from their doctor, the Fitzgeralds go through the process of conceiving another child – one that is genetically engineered to be a perfect match for Kate. Abigail Breslin portrays Anna – Kate’s life line! Anna’s whole purpose of being is to provide organs, blood, and bone marrow to her sister to keep her alive. As the girls enter their teen years, Anna contacts a publicity hound lawyer, played by Alec Baldwin, to sue her parents for medical emancipation. This action immediately rips the family apart and creates emotional turmoil for all. It also raises moral and ethical questions on multiple levels! Another standout character is Judge DeSalvo, exceptionally portrayed by Joan Cuzack. The judge recently returned from a long leave of absence after a break down caused by the accidental death of her own teen-aged daughter. The relationships between all the characters intertwine and meld beautifully. The siblings – Kate, Anna, and brother Jesse – are close nit. In particular, the bond between Kate and Anna is amazingly close. The Judge’s compassion for the Fitzgerald’s situation results in an emotional roller coaster for her that is felt by all. Campbell Alexander – the lawyer – also suffers from a disability that strips him of control over his own body. So he, too, is emotionally connected to young Anna. The movie is incredibly emotional and heart wrenching – watching a lovely young girl become more and more ill and close to death – watching the personal torture Anna goes through as she is torn between her deep love and sense of duty for her sister and her desire to have control over what happens to her own body – watching the parent’s hearts breaking over the inevitable loss of one daughter and the conflict of what to think about the other daughter – watching the judge desperately try to keep her recent tragedy aside as she deals with the case before her………….all actors are incredible in their roles and the story is told impeccably. Take a whole box of tissues or a HUGE stack of napkins in with you — you’ll need them!! I highly recommend this movie – it will give you a lot to think about! I rate this one a solid A+!
Next is The Proposal. How can you go wrong with Sandra Bullock? I don’t think I have ever seen her in a movie that I didn’t like on some level! This was no exception. In this particular romantic comedy, she plays a high powered book editor at a major publishing company in NY City. Margaret Tate is a “Devil Wears Prada” type editor – she is a ruthless executive who is hated and feared by all, but she is much more obvious and loud about it. Her self centered “all about me” attitude about everything she does results in her facing deportation to her native country – Canada! In a split second decision, she blackmails her assistant – Andrew (played by Ryan Reynolds) – into going along with an announcement that they are engaged to be married so that she can get a “fiance visa”! A weekend at Andrew’s parent’s home in Alaska and a suspicious immigration agent set the stage for hilarious situations and the potential for Margaret to show her real self – as well as to provide fuel for real love to develop! This is a very funny movie – Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds have great chemistry and are convincing in their roles. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and recommend it for all you romantic comedy fans and any guys who are looking for a good chick flick to rack up some extra brownie points to impress your date! I rate this one an A-!
And finally, we have Public Enemies. This movie stars Johnny Depp — need I say more???? He was fantastic as gangster John Dillinger – the FBI’s Public Enemy # 1 for much of the depression era years. The movie follows the last couple of years of Dillinger’s life and adventures in crime. It portrays his wild side – his love of women and flamboyance; his softer side – his relationship with girlfriend, Billie, and his deep caring for the members of his gang; and his gangster side – his elaborate jail breaks, his adventurous bank robberies, and his connections to Chicago Mafia head Frank Nitti. I love a good gangster movie and this, for the most part, didn’t disappoint me! Depp was perfect in the role of Dillinger! I was a little disappointed in Christian Bale’s portrayal of FBI agent, Melvin Purvis. Purvis was the charismatic, good looking movie star type who made a name for himself as being the agent who shot Pretty Boy Floyd. On the heels of that fame, he was assigned to focus all of his attention on getting John Dillinger! The cat and mouse game that ensued between Purvis and Dillinger is legendary – Dillinger was always one step ahead of Purvis and he just didn’t have what it took to get close enough to get the job done! I thought the movie did a good job of showing that, but I thought it was lacking something – not sure what, but I thought that whole piece could have been a little more exciting! I also thought Christian Bale’s portrayal of Purvis was a little flat — it didn’t feel right — like it was forced and not natural for him. That didn’t ruin the movie, though — it just left me thinking that something was a little “off”. Overall, the movie was very good — I enjoyed it and definitely recommend it for anyone who likes gangster movies and especially for anyone who likes Johnny Depp!!! I rate this one a B+++!
See you at the movies!
It is no secret that Megan and Amy (and even Katie to a MUCH lower degree) were extremely destructive when they were puppies! My stories about the endless furniture they devoured are legendary! Another item I could never keep in the house without resulting in mass quantities of batting strewn all over, was soft, plush, stuffed dog toys! In a matter of minutes, any soft toy they came into contact with would be history!
There are still some soft toys here and there that belonged to Puddles that I rescued from the jaws of the “toy shredders” by stashing them somewhere – long forgotten! As we move stuff and go through stuff and disrupt the whole house to paint walls, we have found a few of those beloved toys that Puddles revered so dearly. Ronald gave one to the girls one day when I wasn’t there – I came home to find Megan with it in her mouth. Panic set in — I have not had to clean up any messes due to chewing since just before Christmas (except for the rare occasional magazine or paper towel roll)! They have completely stopped eating everything in sight! But I was sure this would not be something they could resist! But, I decided to make it a test and see what happens!
I couldn’t have been more wrong! Megan has latched onto this toy and carries it proudly with her everywhere! She walks around with it – she sleeps with it – she shows it off with sheer joy in her eyes! It is HER new friend and the other girls are not allowed to even LOOK at it, except when Megan is shaking it in their faces to show off and tease them with it! But she has NOT chewed even the tiniest hole in it – every speck of stuffing is still intact – the eyes are still in place – the little hat is still on it’s little head! Dare I actually say it? My girls have finally, officially, completely outgrown the puppy stage of ripping apart and eating anything that they even remotely think just might have some cool batting or foam to pull out and strew from one end of the house to the other!!! It has been almost TWO WEEKS that she has had this toy with her 24/7 — it just might be safe to assume it will survive the wrath of Megan-stein!
Here is Megan with her new found friend:

OK – so, I was sooooo tired last night that I gave in and went to bed before 9:00 and fell right asleep – instantly! Then, about 1:00 am, I started waking up and hitting the snooze button – I thought the alarm was going off!!! I did that about 4 or 5 times and started to get irritated!!! So, I got up and checked my watch and other clocks to be sure the time was right and – yep – it was just before 2:00 am! So, I checked the alarm and it was set for 5:00 am – just like it should be!!! So, I assumed I was dreaming about the alarm going off and tried to lay back down……and it went off AGAIN!!! This time I was definitely awake and it was definitely not a dream!!! I whacked the snooze button and wondered what the heck was going on!!!!????!!!! Then, I noticed it — the little indicator light on the other side of the face of the clock! You see, my alarm clock has a feature I have never used — it actually has the ability to set TWO alarms at different times for couples who need to get up on different schedules!!! I must have accidentally turned on the second alarm and it was set for 1:00 am!!! UUUGGGHHH!!!! Once I got that all settled, I was able to go back to sleep, but my nice LONG night of peaceful sleep was totally down the drain!!!
Watch the 6:00 news — that alarm clock’s days just may be numbered!!!
Life has been crazy lately — busy, busy, busy!!! I owe blog posts about the Family 4th Celebration in Sanford this weekend – it was a GRAND time! Also – I have seen two movies recently – My Sister’s Keeper last weekend and The Proposal today. I need to get reviews posted….but not tonight! Sorry – I will say that I enjoyed both movies, but the details will need to wait until I’ve had some sleep! No new renovation updates – we took the weekend off!
Good night!!!
Man, it was HOT in Sanford this weekend! It hit 100 degrees on Saturday and is supposed to be in the high 90s again today! The preference would be to just crank up the air conditioning and hibernate! But, with weekend adventures and Father’s Day thoughts, there is still a lot to write about…
I had a yard sale on Saturday! The weather predictions earlier in the week talked about thunderstorms! But, it ended up being even worse — no thunderstorms, but it was sunny and 100 degrees!!! I could have had a garage sale, instead of a yard sale, if it had rained…..but there was no getting out of that heat!! Right from 5:00 am when I first started setting out my junk – er, ah, I mean items that I don’t necessarily want anymore, but may just be the one thing someone else has always wanted – it was muggy and got me all sweaty. And it got hotter from there! I ended up having a great yard sale – made $220 – but I also ended up with a sunburn and a very sore, tired body!! The girls weren’t much interested in going out yesterday, either! I had them out for a while, but it was just too hot for them out there…. So, the afternoon was spent in the air conditioning, napping with the girls, and trying to stay cool….
Today is supposed to be in the high 90s, but it is windy, so it doesn’t feel as bad as it did at this time yesterday. I have been outside watering plants (I think yesterday’s heat killed one of my hanging plants – hope a drink will bring it back) and watching the girls run around the yard and play in their pool! It was actually quite pleasant being outside and enjoying the morning!
I had a blast watching the girls play this morning – they were a RIOT!! I was letting their pool fill while I did some work around the patio. They were running around chasing each other and playing really hard, like usual…..they would jump in and out of the pool in their chases and sometimes stop to root around in the water and then get back to their wild chase!!!

Amy has perfected the “leap over the pool” stunt — she runs full speed dead at the pool and just as she gets to it, she leaps up in the air far above the pool and jumps completely over it at the widest point (this is NOT a small pool – it is the largest of the plastic kiddie pools from WalMart) and clears the jump without touching the water or the edges of the pool at all!!!! It is amazing!!!!
Then, at one point, they had rooted around in the pool and ended up turning the hose nozzle so that it was spraying up like a fountain — Katie and Megan cautiously watched it and got up close, but backed off when it sprayed in their faces — not Amy, she went bonkers on it!!! She bit at the fountain and barked at it and lunged at it and just went crazy!!! THEN, she grabbed the handle and pulled it up out of the water and shook it – the hook on the handle released and the water shut off!!! She threw it down and backed up just a little and held her head up high and looked around at me, Megan, and Katie with her chest all puffed up and you could just tell she was as proud as she could be — “I killed the pool monster – the evil water serpent is dead!!!” It was so funny!!!
Today – June 21st – is special for three reasons:

Right now, I am watching two really ugly bugs with weird looking legs try to maneuver themselves around on the screen outside the window beside my computer desk! Glad they are outside!
As Porky Pig used to say…..Th-th-th-th-th-th-th-that’s all folks!!!
I have spent a lot of time in my garage over the last two days. Renovating to increase the organization and look is one of the items on my wish list of things to work on this summer. But, first – it had to be cleaned out!
Let me start from the beginning…
I have never lived in a house with a garage! Well, that’s not totally true – two homes I lived in had garages, but neither were used as garages! Both my Grandparents and my Mom had garages in the back yard that were used as work shops and for lawn equipment storage. So, when I began to shop for a house to purchase, one of the items on my list of priority features to look for was an attached garage! I was happy that two of my top three choices had attached garages! There were several things that “sold” me on this house and one of the major ones was the garage!
Most garages in homes that I looked at – including the other one in my top three – weren’t finished off inside. This one was finished off with drywall, paint, several electrical outlets on each wall and phone jacks on two walls! Very nice! In particular, I have really enjoyed the benefits of having a phone in the garage — do you know how great it is to not have to rush to unlock the door and get in the house with an armload of grocery bags to answer a phone that is ringing just as I’m getting home? AND – it even saved the day one time when I got out in the garage to get in my car and head out to work and realized I had just locked my purse (with cell phone in it) AND keys in the house – I was able to call Ronald at work and he came over with his house key to let me in!!! (it’s the simple things that make the world so special) It is a one car size with an electric door opener. What more could I ask for????
I soon found, however, that my house didn’t have enough storage space in it! So, despite an attempt to provide organized storage with shelving units and boxes with drawers, the garage ended up being a place where everything that didn’t have a place got stashed! The shelving units got full and held more weight than they were designed to hold and things that couldn’t go on the shelves were stacked (albeit neatly) on the floor!
Back to the present:
This weekend was devoted to hauling out and sorting through all the stuff that has accumulated in the garage over the years! Of course, we picked an incredibly HOT weekend to do this! The garage has phone jacks, but no air conditioning! ha-ha-ha
I was amazed at what I found out there — both in the actual amount of stuff that was stored and in what I learned about myself! Apparently, I am an impulse buyer…..I found bags of stuff I bought thinking that I would use it someday, but there it sat – still in the bags – unopened and unused! In some cases I didn’t even remember buying it or why in the world I thought I needed it! I even found stuff that I obviously didn’t remember buying because there were TWO purchases of the same thing – both still in the bags – unopened and unused – but on different shelves! Oy vey!!!
We hauled two truck loads (not as bad as it sounds – it was a small pick up) with things that were given to friends/relatives or to be discarded (I also discovered that I am an empty box horder – there were lots and lots of empty boxes stored “in case I need to ship something”). What is left will either be put back after the planned renovations because it is needed/used or will go in a yard sale that I am planning for next weekend — my junk could be your treasure!!! ha-ha
Planned Renovations:
The shelving units were a good idea, but didn’t provide all the organization options I obviously need! So — we will be putting peg board on two walls (maybe three walls – not sure, yet) that will allow for things like ladders, yard tools, extension cords, rolls of tape, and some tools to be hung up on the walls. I will keep two shelving units for boxes and things that can go on a shelf. And we’re putting in an overhead shelf that will store large seasonal items – like the Christmas tree and decorations! We’re also going to paint the walls and peg board to match the paint theme inside the house and put a nice epoxy coating on the floor!
Next Steps:
Yard sale on Saturday — anything that is put in the yard sale pile that doesn’t sell will be discarded or donated and will NOT return to the garage! Pressure wash the entire garage to prep it for the painting and floor coating. Then we’re moving on to the inside painting to take advantage of some things that are going on that will create a perfect window of opportunity to get a majority of the inside painting done! Then we’ll finish the garage!
YIPPEE!!!!
I usually get a chuckle or two when I look at my blog’s stats page and see what search terms bring people to my blog. I wonder what they were expecting to find on the web when they plugged in the search term and if what they found in my blog fulfilled that expectation. I sometimes wonder what in the world I wrote that would make my blog show up on a search list based on the term as it was written…(like the times I found “ugly girls in Sanford” and “naked lawn dancers at night” in the list of search terms used to find me)…ha-ha-ha!
So – in case you were wondering what brings people to my blog (I know it is a burning topic on most of your minds), here are some of the search terms from the last seven days:
So – there you have it!!!
Just some quick mid-week thoughts…. I love having this blog to “unload” my thoughts on people who pop in to see what I have written! This graphic says it all: “I don’t need a therapist – I have an online journal”! Ha-ha — you all are my therapists!!! Just send me your bills……

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And now for the Main Course….
Other thoughts:
That’s it for now….Looking forward to the weekend!
It was such a nice day today and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it! Let me tell you all about what made it so special.
First: The rain that was predicted for today didn’t happen! It got a little cloudy a couple of times and looks like it might rain tonight, but during the time I was out and about, I was able to ride around with the top down! The sky was a beautiful blue with huge, fluffy white clouds and the temperature hovered right around the 70 degree mark! PERFECT!
I started the day out doing one of my most favorite things – playing with the girls!
Then, I headed out….
First stop was the Grand Opening at The Painted Petal Art Design Studio. What a lovely little shop Lisa Orlando has! Lots of great ideas for decorating and she holds classes, too! I’m planning to have her come see what ideas she has for some hand painted accents around the house after I get done with all the painting I am planning to do. The other part of the Grand Opening was Lisa’s daughter’s business – Ashley Wicker has opened a Massage Studio there, as well. She was giving free chair massages, so I definitely took advantage of that!!!
I then went to have lunch at the Steele Street Coffee and Wine Bar! I’ve only been there a couple of times and both were for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and both were very enjoyable experiences! I had a glass of red wine with the flavors of blackberries, blueberries, some other berries, and a hint of chocolate — amazing!!! I should have written down the name of it – I knew I’d forget it!! I also had a cup of Maryland Style Crab Soup – a clear tomato based broth with lots of veggies – I didn’t see any crab, but it had a very nice distinct crab flavor – yummy! The sandwich I chose was the Oriental Wrap – grilled chicken breast, shredded carrots, lettuce, cabbage, crispy oriental noodles, and a ginger sauce — delicious! And they put some fresh strawberries, blueberries, and cantaloupe on the plate, too! I took a Mango Tropics (blend of mango, pineapple, and banana) smoothie with me to sip as I went about the rest of my business! Perfect lunch!
I went to Added Accents to get a birthday gift for a friend and then headed to Lowes. My friend is coming over tomorrow to measure the garage and kitchen to get supplies for some of the work we’re going to do on the house. So, I wanted to go to Lowes and decide on the wainscoting and chair rail molding I want so I’m not wasting his time trying to make up my mind! I picked out the perfect wainscoting for the kitchen and absolutely fell in love with a beautiful chair rail molding!!! It has a leafy vine through the middle of it – striking!! So – the kitchen will be a nice light wood wainscoting on the bottom half, the terra cotta paint on the top half, and this beautiful chair rail molding painted one of the colors I’m using in the living room to pull it all together (not sure whether I’ll use the wall color or the trim color – I’ll have to wait to see which one looks best with the wainscoting)!
I went ahead and bought the chair rail molding – they only had three pieces of it and I loved it so much that I was sure it would be just my luck to go back tomorrow and find they sold them!!! I bought all three – I’m fairly sure I’ll only need two, but I didn’t want to risk it! I can always use it for something else or take it back, if I don’t need the third one!
When I got home, I found out that I was all set to send out info for an on-line Thirty-One party I am hosting! I’m doing it on-line cause my house is gonna be all tore up for a while during all the renovations I’m starting! Check out the end of this post for more info, if you’re interested!
For dinner, I put a pork roast in the oven and it came out sooooooo good!!! I out did myself! It was tasty, moist, tender, and made the house smell amazing!! I roasted carrots and onions with it and they made the perfect sides!
I am now capping off the evening with a nice cup of tea – Egyptian Chamomile with Delicate Apple! YUM! Life is good!!
I had a restless night last night – first, I couldn’t get to sleep until about 2:30 am and then when I did finally get to sleep, it was riddled with strange dreams that kept waking me up! Here’s the one that sticks out and I have the clearest memory of….
I was in a mountain setting – an area with a lot of trees, trails, and cabins on the side of a mountain. It seemed like I must have lived there – everyone seemed to know me and I walked around with authority and an understanding of where everything was and how to get there. I was at a general store type place, engaged in small talk with the owners and customers. A strange young girl came in all dressed in white chiffon with long curly blond hair and no coat or shoes – I commented to the people I was talking with that she must not be from around here cause she doesn’t know enough to put on a coat and shoes when there is 3 feet of snow on the ground! We all laughed about her. There was also a guy that sort of lingered around at the entrance door like he was waiting for her – he was also all dressed in white, but he did have a light jacket on and was also wearing big, clunky, brown work boots. She picked up a few things and came to the register to pay – she didn’t look up or make any eye contact and didn’t speak at all – not even to acknowledge the “hellos” that were offered by me and several others. The couple left. I told the others that I had to get up to the house and left myself. I walked up the trail to a small cabin that was full of people. On my way up to the cabin, I saw the strange lady again – this time she was walking off the path across the woods with the man laying behind her holding onto her ankles – she seemed to float along in the deep snow as she dragged him behind her – still not wearing any coat or shoes. I called out to her to see if she needed any help, but she didn’t respond or look my way. I got to the cabin and asked if my mother was there, yet – no one answered me, so I looked around and didn’t see her anywhere. I told them that I saw her in a vision on the way up the mountain and that she was dragging a man in the snow and that I was worried about her. One person looked at me and said that I should stop listening to my visions and participate in the real world. So, I left to go look for her. I came up on another cabin and there were also a lot of people there. They were standing in line to give something to a man sitting in a very high chair. As I got closer, I saw that they were giving him money and that he was the strange man I saw in the general store and again being dragged by the lady. He looked at me and asked me what I was doing there – he said “if you’re going to bore me with another one of you silly visions, you need to just turn around and go home!” I climbed up the side of his chair and told him that I needed to speak with him and he better come right now, if he knows what’s good for him! He came down and we walked over to the side away from the crowd! I told him that I knew he did something with my mother and he was going to pay for it!! I knocked him down, sat on him, and began to punch him over and over in the face – I said that should show him that he needs to fear me! As I was hitting him, I noticed that my watch had a text message, so I peaked at it between whacks – it was from him – apparently, he was texting me while I was hitting him and the text said “you are no one to fear – you aren’t even touching me!”. I got up and he laughed and asked if I had fun and if it made me feel better. I stormed off and went to another cabin. The inside of this cabin was the oval office of the White House! I found myself sitting with a group of people talking to President Obama – I told him about what had happened to me that day and it made him and everyone break out in big robust laughter! So, I laughed too, like I had meant it to be a joke – then I said “they all must have been Republicans”, which made everyone laugh again! Then, President Obama got up and broke out in a jazzy song and dance routine to entertain the crowd – I remarked to the person next to me that I can’t believe he is still giving impromptu performances now that he’s President!
I woke up wondering what in the world prompted any part of that dream!!!
