Right from the start of the most recent season of The Next Food Network Star, I was pulling for Aarti! She had such a vibrant personality and smiling face. Her point of view is to bring Indian flavors to every day American foods. And everything she made looked and sounded absolutely amazing!!! I was excited when she made it to the finale, but was concerned that one of the others might squeeze by her! But, then they announced the winner……….Aarti………and I cheered!!! I was so looking forward to seeing her new show – Aarti Party – on Food Network! I set up the DVR to record it so that I wouldn’t miss it! It was on today at noon and it was just as much fun to watch as I thought it would be! I haven’t been this excited about a new Food Network star in a long time! After watching her first show, I’m hooked even more than I was just watching her during the competition! I look forward to discovering many new recipes with her!
The recipes she crammed into her 1/2 hour show are all ones that I will definitely plan to make – I’m even thinking of going out to get a pork butt roast to make the main recipe for Labor Day! (we’ll see if I actually get that ambitious or not) Her recipes today included a new twist on Pulled Pork that looked incredible – I could almost taste it right through the TV – it was called “Pulled Pork with Mango BBQ Sauce”! She also made an “Apple – Lime – Peanut Slaw” that was a tangy sauce over cabbage, green apples, and garnished with roasted peanuts – YUM!!! And, for dessert, she made “Come ‘ere Puddin’ Pie” – a chocolate-ginger pudding pie with made from scratch pudding! Click on the recipe names for the links to how to make these great sounding dishes!
I was particularly interested in the pulled pork recipe. Pork is my favorite meat – I love it! I have also found from living in North Carolina, that pork – in particular, pulled pork – is its own major food group and found everywhere! The variations based on region are about a different as night and day and are the source of many heated discussions any time the topic comes up. Although I like them all, I do admit that I prefer a BBQ based sauce to the vinegar based sauces. But, the very best way to eat it is without any sauce at all — just the flavors from the rub that was used to cook it! I don’t usually want to mask the flavor of the pork in any way. But, the sound of the Mango BBQ Sauce she used is so intriguing……I really want to try it!!!
Catch her show and try her recipes — you’re sure to have fun doing it!
OK, so the title sounds like I’m throwing myself a little pity party…..well, kinda, but not really! I have way too much to do and think about to fit in a pity party……and, frankly, that’s not usually my style (although I do admit to indulging in pity parties on occasion). But, I have to admit that the last two weeks have been quite wild ride of things that could easily fit into the category of “everything that can go wrong, will go wrong”! All day, yesterday, the old song from Hee Haw, “Gloom, Despair, and Agony on Me”, played over and over in my mind – which didn’t help one bit! hahaha
So, here’s the general idea:
On Monday, the 16th, I got in to work and started thinking about my Mom a lot more than usual. She’s been having some trouble for quite some time, but something just kept telling me to call her. When I did, she said she was just about to call me and tell me that she’s calling the ambulance to take her to the hospital. If you knew my Mom, you’d know that this can’t be good……she just wouldn’t do that unless it was a last resort! So, I went into “knee jerk reaction” mode and booked a flight that left within a couple of hours to get me up there to be with her! I originally thought, I’d stay a few days to get her through whatever the doctors put her on and come on back home. I probably wasn’t really needed, but it would put my mind at ease and just maybe help a little, too.
Well, it was a good thing I reacted to that knee jerk, cause it was BAD and got worse as the week progressed! I won’t go into details, but suffice it to say that I really needed to be there! And I ended up staying two weeks!
But, that wasn’t the only thing…….
I really had to rush to make the flight I booked! I ran out of work, got to the house and met Ronald to help him get the girls to take them to Rae-Zor, threw a few cloths in a bag and sped to the airport! When I got to my layover in Baltimore I realized that I was in such a rush, I completely forgot to grab my daily medications!!! Ooppss! So, I called my doctor to see if I could arrange for a small amount to be called in to the local pharmacy in my home town. Seemed simple…….but, of course, it wasn’t! Everyone – the doc and both Pharmacies (here and there) were all more than willing to help, but there was red tape that kept getting in the way of everything we tried!!! After several calls over the next day, I finally got my meds! And – it was a good thing I over estimated and asked for a 10 day supply “just in case”, because I ended up needing them all and wouldn’t have wanted to go through that again!
Megan got sick while at Rae-Zor and she had to spend a day at All Animals — bloody diarrhea that was probably stress related!!! Katie sometimes gets stress related diarrhea, but Megan doesn’t and it was a lot worse than normal diarrhea!!! So, I worried about her from then on — worrying if she was OK and dealing with the guilt that I probably caused it by traumatizing them all by rushing them off and then not coming back in a few days, like usual!!! My poor babies!!!
I also lost two old high school friends to cancer during those two weeks – one I had heard about the morning I also heard about Mom and took off up north! The other the day before I was set to leave and come back home. I planned to attend the memorial for the first one, but Mom’s situation was more important and I didn’t make it. I felt bad, but family does come first – ALWAYS!!!
When I got home on Friday, I discovered that in my rush to leave, I forgot about a bag of tomatoes and green peppers I had on the kitchen counter —- well, after two weeks, they were about as rotten as they could get!!! I smelled them as soon as I entered the house!!! YUCK-O!!!! I also discovered when I got in to work on Monday that I had left about 1/2 a big travel mug full of tea on my desk —- which was moldy after two weeks!!! Eeww!!!
But, with all that, the one thing that hit me as “are you freaking kidding me?” was when I fell at Mom’s! Last Tuesday, I was headed out her front door to get the mail and misjudged a step and tumbled to the ground. Oh, wait, that sounds graceful and simple —– it was anything but graceful and simple! I twisted my right ankle….bent all my right toes backwards….which sent my balance all off….I fell in what seemed like slow motion……landing HARD on my left knee (my bad knee) square on the cement sidewalk…..bent my right wrist backwards trying to break my fall…….and twisted my right shoulder as I rolled over onto the grass to try to figure out if I was OK or not!!!! I laid there for what seemed like several minutes in agony thinking about what will happen if I broke something and couldn’t get up — my Mom lives out on a country road — neighbors too far away to see me laying there — if a passing car DID happen to go by and they by chance looked into the yard, they wouldn’t see me cause I was laying behind the cars in the driveway — and, of course, I didn’t have my cell phone with me (although, who would I have called – maybe into the house to tell Mom I was outside and wouldn’t be in for a while, so don’t call out for me???)!!! But, I was able to move, get up, realized nothing was broken, and limped into the house!!! I iced the knee and ankle down and went on with what I needed to do —- but, man, both swelled and bruised and were bad the rest of the week!!! The ankle was fine in no time, but the knee didn’t improve until this weekend. Then, Monday and yesterday, it started aching again and throbbing again and I was concerned maybe I did more than just bang it up good! So, I went to Urgent Care last night to get an X-ray. Nothing cracked or chipped, but it did cause a major arthritis flare-up!!! I haven’t had one of those in a long time — yeah, it hurts from time to time and I have to be careful with it, but nothing like this in a while!!! So — I now have that to deal with until it calms down! Uugghh!!!
So —- I’m ready for some good stuff to happen!!! Bring it on!!! LOL
Thanks to a post by a fellow blogger, I discovered an amazing website. It is totally devoted to recorded stories by real people capturing incredible memories and vulnerabilities. It is a verbal blog from people of all walks of life with a wide range of things to say. I watched the two animated recordings that are available – apparently, they just started to animate some of the recordings left on the site – and was utterly fascinated! Both gave me something to laugh about and to cry about. I found myself wishing I knew each of the story tellers personally so that I could go have a conversation with them from time to time. I have listened to some of the others and can not wait for time to dig in and listen to more — and am looking forward to the next animated stories that are set to be available in the coming weeks.
The site? StoryCorps! The two animated shorts that touched me enough to make me want more? Danny & Annie and Q&A — both well worth your time to watch and listen to their incredible stories. Check it out — you won’t be sorry and you just might find yourself coming back for more!
I saw the new Julia Roberts movie – Eat Pray Love – a couple of weeks ago on the 14th. I got side tracked and didn’t write a review the day I saw it and then went out of town for a couple of weeks, so I am a little late getting my thoughts about it on here…….but, you know what they say – Better late than never! So, here I am with an attempt to make amends and write my review.
Eat Pray Love is the story of real life American writer, Elizabeth Gilbert, and is based on her 2006 memoir. Gilbert is a 32-year-old writer who is unhappy in her marriage, so she initiates a contested divorce, has an affair with a younger man, and after all that still doesn’t find her the happiness she craves, she takes a year to travel across Italy, India, and Bali to find herself. She spends 4 months in each location — first, Italy to find pure pleasure in food and eating it; second, India to find joy through prayer; and third, to Bali to seek out inner peace, but ends up finding true love in the process.
Watching her journey was a pleasure. In each 4 month stay, she made friends that helped her find what she was searching for and had adventures that brought her joy and fulfillment. I personally enjoyed the Italy and Bali segments, but found the India segments to be a little slow and boring. I think I would like to read the book because the movie gave me just enough of a taste to peak my interest and curiosity, but not enough to convince me that she got everything she was looking for in her year-long quest.
Julia Roberts does her usual charming job portraying her character. Other characters of note include Richard Jenkins, who plays Richard from Texas, a fellow traveler in India seeking peace from the loss of his family due to (I believe) alcoholism. Jenkins always impresses me in his roles – he is a natural actor who makes you want to love and believe his characters. Javier Bardem is Felipe, the hunky Brazilian businessman that Julia finds true love with in Bali. Bardem is irresistible and lovable in this role. I was totally taken in by him! BUT — I was absolutely 100% confident that he was also the guy who played Izzy Stevens’ love interest in Grey’s Anatomy – the one who was a heart patient and died!!! I was shocked to find out it is NOT him — the Grey’s character was played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, which I knew — this actor is Javier Bardem! But they look so much alike — I mean, like REALLY so much alike! When I saw a different name on the cast list for the movie, I had to go searching to find out if I remembered the name of the Grey’s guy wrong or what!!! I found that others obviously had the same confusion, because I found a comparison photo – here they are with Bardem on the left and Morgan on the right – long-lost twins, for sure:
So — bottom line — I liked this movie. I felt like they left some important stuff out, but until I read the book, I won’t know what that was. So, it did leave me wanting more and feeling like I was missing something. But, that is usually the case with any film that is made from a book — they can’t put it all in a 1.5-2 hour movie…….. It was a typical “newly divorced woman needs to go to some exotic place to find herself” type of story, but it was told well and had some very interesting characters and relationships to help it along. I rate it a solid B+ and recommend it to anyone who likes these types of stories.

The last time Mom was here for a visit, she made a pasta stir fry that was absolutely incredible. She just threw a bunch of stuff in a pan and tossed it all together and it tasted amazing! I have considered trying to do it myself, but wasn’t sure I could make it taste the same – or even close. But, decided to give it a try tonight. After making a call to be sure I remembered the spices correctly, I got the rest of the selected ingredients and came home to cook.
There is no recipe — just use the meat or seafood and veggies of your choosing and season to taste. It is only limited to how much you need to make for the number of people you’re serving, what ingredients you like, and how much seasoning you prefer. Here is the basic idea:
The variation I made tonight was with beef strips, linguine, and a mixture of corn, baby carrots, asparagus, and peas. I also used Italian Herb flavored roasted garlic. It was amazing and full of wonderful flavor! The only thing I would do different, if I ever use beef strips again, is to marinate it or something to tenderize is some – it was just a little chewy, but not bad!
Here is what mine looked like – the first is the individual serving and the second is the leftovers (which I usually don’t care for, but I think this is going to be so much better after the linguine has a chance to soak up all that wonderful garlic and ginger):
Enjoy!
There hasn’t been a lot of movies out this summer that have grabbed me and compelled me to go see them. Most of the ones that did pique my interest didn’t motivate me enough to put other priorities aside and go to the theater. And, the ones that I did go to the theater to see have been less than impressive – “The Kids Are All Right” was good, but fell a little flat and “The Other Guys” was a total waste of my time! So, I decided not to gamble on “Dinner With Schmucks” – which I thought might be a fun movie, but so far, I haven’t heard many rave reviews from those I know who have seen it and I actually over heard someone at the theater yesterday say it was the dumbest movie they had ever seen – not a good sign!
So, I was even a little leery of “Charlie St. Cloud” – it looked like just the type of movie I really enjoy and the previews looked great, but my track record has been so poor, that I just wasn’t sure……..but, I gave in and went to see it today. As I was getting my ticket, I over heard a group behind me talking about how much they were looking forward to the movie and a couple in their group said they have already seen it and can’t wait to see it again! Good sign – I was feeling comfortable with my decision!!!
The movie stars Zac Efron – you know, “High School Musical” – in what I believe is his first serious film. Efron plays the title role, a sailing enthusiast who lives with his little brother and mother in a sleepy little coastal town in the Pacific Northwest. He is just graduating from high school with a scholarship and dreams for a bright and successful future. Until tragedy strikes and changes his life forever. As time goes on, he has to decide whether to honor a promise made to his little brother, Sam, or a chance at love and discovery of why he was given a second chance at life during the horrible accident that took Sam.
The story is touching, warm, and endearing. Efron does a decent job in his role – not oscar worthy, but not bad. Charlie Tahan, who plays Sam, was sweet and charismatic. Amanda Crew is well cast as Tess Carroll, an old school friend of Charlie’s that comes back into his life. In two smaller, but important parts, are Ray Liotta, as the paramedic who revives Charlie in the accident, and Kim Basinger, as Charlie and Sam’s mother.
The movie was a little slow in spots – they could have either beefed up the story a little or cut it down some. But it was good. I felt a part of the character’s lives and would have liked to see the director cut parts of the fluff and add-on to the end to show more of how everything turned out — although, they did have flashes of that during the credits.
I really enjoyed this movie. I’ll take some points off for the pace, but over all, I rate it a solid A-. It was a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon and restored my faith in my choice of movies!
Sanford has a new restaurant downtown – Sabatino’s Italian Restaurant. It has only been open about a week, but I have already heard many great reviews regarding the food and the prices, so I decided to give it a try. I ate a late breakfast and spent a couple hours outside Office Max for the annual CIS Stuff The Bus Campaign, so I didn’t really think about lunch until about 2:00 – when most of the locally owned restaurants close. I was happy to see that Sabatino’s doesn’t close between the lunch and dinner hours and that I was able to go for a nice lunch before going to a movie.
I found Sabatino’s to be delightful! The decor is bright and cheery, yet still has that wonderful Sanford old building feel with at least one wall of exposed brick. There was lovely old Italian music playing to set the mood and everything was so very welcoming.
The menu has a wide variety of wonderful sounding dishes and the news of it being reasonably priced was accurate. I had the 1/4 rotisserie chicken (dark) with mashed potatoes and corn. I mulled over the Italian choices, but really wanted something light after being out in the sun most of the day. I was very pleased with my decision – it was incredible! The chicken had an amazingly crisp skin that was seasoned beautifully and the meat inside was moist and flavorful. The sides were huge and served in their own large oval dishes – the corn was fresh tasting and not at all mushy; the mashed potatoes were made from real potatoes and pleasingly lumpy, yet creamy! Everything was delicious and there was so much, I wasn’t able to finish it all! And the bill was just about $5.00!!!
I love all the locally owned restaurants downtown — it is no secret that I am a huge fan of Cafe 121 and The Steele Pig, among others. But, I am so happy to see this new addition, giving downtown a little more variety — especially since it is open when some of the others aren’t!
Check out Sabatino’s — from my experience and what I hear of other experiences, you won’t be sorry! I can’t wait to go for dinner one evening and have one of the many Italian dishes that sounded so amazing as I read the menu.
Sabatino’s is located on the corner of Steele and Carthage Streets at 101 Steele Street. They are open Mon-Sat 11:00 am – 10:00 pm and Sun 11:00 am – 4:00 pm. 777-0501
I hadn’t seen anything on the new Mark Wahlberg / Will Ferrell movie until I saw it listed on the line up at Spring Lane Cinemas. I checked out the trailers online and was hooked! Personally not a Will Ferrell fan, but LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Mark Wahlberg. The plot sounded cool and the promise of a mix of Action/Adventure and Comedy was intriguing. I instantly had to see this film. I read the reviews on Yahoo and they were mixed with an average rating of B- for critics and B+ for users…….not bad! Some really enjoyed it and some absolutely hated it. I decided to give it a try!
Wahlberg and Ferrell are cops who aren’t really the “stars” of the precinct – they are “the other guys”. But, they wanna be and they finally get the case that just might do it for them. But, things just don’t go as planned.
I’ll get right to the point —- I can be added to those who absolutely hated this movie!!! Hands down, one of the worst movies I’ve seen in a very long time! It was NOT funny — I didn’t so much as smile at any scene and there were very few in the theater that chuckled and it was rare when they did! The action scenes were totally unbelievable and hokey. Will Farrell was dull and boring. And the worst part of all? Mark Wahlberg was supposed to be this ex-macho cop who was banished to low profile cases and made fun of because he accidentally shot Derek Jeter and cost NY a chance at the playoffs……..but, he came off as a mad, yet wimpy and irritating character. AND – unless it happened during one of the times I dozed off, he never took his shirt off once! I think this is the only movie he’s ever been in that he didn’t go shirtless for at least one scene!
As I just mentioned, I slept though parts of the movie. Also, the couple in front of me left about 1/3 of the way through it! And there was very little out loud laughter from the rest of the audience (BTW – the audience was mostly guys). So, I’m guessing I wasn’t the only one there that was disappointed.
Save your money on this one — if you really think you might disagree with me and like it, wait until it comes out on NetFlix! I rate this one a solid D — the only thing that kept it from being even lower was the presence of Mark Wahlberg, even though I was not at all happy with his performance.
Going home is always a treat. No doubt or argument there. I give a lot of thought to the pros and cons of going for 1-2 extended trips or multiple shorter trips each year. Both definitely have distinct benefits and downfalls. In past years, I have tended to go for the longer, but less frequent trips. But this year, I seem to have opted for the multiple shorter trips. I just popped up for a long weekend visit last week and was so very glad I did!
The reason was a spur of the moment trip up for Mom’s birthday. The ulterior motive was that she has been having some problem with pain and has been laid up for several months. It was upsetting to be so far away and not able to help or do anything! It worked out that I could have a nice visit with her, help her out a little, and be able to take her to the doctor for an appointment. It was really nice and well worth it! We had a good time just spending time with each other!
I also managed to cram a few other things in this trip, too!
First — my first great-nephew was born in January and I haven’t been able to meet him, yet. I was up over Memorial Day weekend, but they were out-of-town, so I missed getting to see him! We finally connected this trip! We had a little family gathering for Mom’s birthday and Nolen was there. He is absolutely PERFECT! At six months old, he is 22 pounds, 6 ounces and 28 inches tall! Big boy! But, beautiful! Here is my precious great-nephew, Nolen – totally fascinated with my watch! I dare you to try to tell me he isn’t the most adorable big boy in the world!
Of course, I also popped in at the Mount Albion Cemetery to visit Poppie, Grandma, Grandpa, and other relatives that are no longer with us.
A while back, a friend posted an article about an open house at a Bed & Breakfast in an old school in our town. I found the information interesting and thought that I would have to check it out some day, but didn’t make note of the date because I didn’t have any plans to go up at that time. I don’t know what made me think of it when I was packing for the trip, but I decided to see if by some freak chance it might be happening that weekend – I thought there was no way the dates lined up! But, they DID! So, I had to go to town to pick up some groceries for Mom and run a couple other errands for her, so I popped in to check it out! WOW — what a treat! The historic building was the old St. Mary’s Assumption School and someone bought it and turned it into a B&B. They kept the antique feel and the Catholic school theme for the decor throughout. It is amazing! If you ever find yourself in Albion, NY and need a place to stay, check out the Erie Canal Schoolhouse Bed & Breakfast – here is their web site for more info about it.
Part of the open house was a display of handmade miniature carnival rides that was incredible and also a wonderful tribute to Charlie Howard – the real Santa Claus! I was so excited to see it all. I have so many wonderful memories of Charlie Howard’s Santa Claus School and Christmas Park that was a major attraction in my home town when I was a child. I wrote a special post about him and his legacy (click here to read it). The following photo shows some of the signs that came from Christmas Park – the one in front put a huge smile on my face because I used to LOVE to put my quarter in the clothes pin at the end of a fishing pole string and dangle it over the wall to “fish” for a special surprise gift! What fun for a child!
Another day when I went to town to get some things for Mom, I made a side trip to Point Breeze to check out the progress on the new lighthouse they are building there. (check out my post about the lighthouse so you, too, can see the progress) They still have some work to do and the brick walkways and seating areas they have planned aren’t started, yet, but it looks pretty good!
And, of course, I can’t go to Point Breeze without spending a little time enjoying the water and watching the boats making their way up Oak Orchard River out to Lake Ontario for a day on the lake. I love Point Breeze and being on or near the lake!
So – it was a very FULL trip, but mostly spent just being with Mom, which was GREAT! The only regret is that I didn’t have a chance to contact some of my friends and arrange a lunch or get together of some kind — next trip, for sure!
