Photos of the Day – Jan 1st

Welcome to 2017 and a new challenge for Daily Photos. I think I’m going to try something a little different for a while and see where it goes. I am going to try for TWO photos every day — one will be whatever catches my eye or follow a theme – if I decide to do a theme in a particular month (I’ll call them “Caught By My Lens”) and one will meet a specific topic on an established list being used by other Instagram posters (see the January 2017 list below). Don’t know if I’ll keep this up or go back to just doing my one Daily Photo and an occasional bonus shot, but let’s start out the year with this and see how I like it!

So, here goes……January 1, 2017 Photos of the Day:

Movie Review – Fences

mv5botg0nzc1nja0mv5bml5banbnxkftztgwntcyndq0mdi-_v1_sy1000_cr006391000_al_

I haven’t been to the movie theater in a LONG time…..just haven’t seen anything come out that I had a burning desire to see! I thought maybe I’d go see one on Christmas day….used to love to go to the movies on Christmas when I lived in NC on years that I didn’t come up home or Mom didn’t go down to be with me for the holidays. But, then a friend and I made plans to go during the week, so I held off and waited until we could go together. There were 2 or 3 movies I thought I might be interested in. Fences – the new Denzel Washington film that opened on Christmas Day – was one of them. So, today was the day we could both go and that is what we saw.

First……like I said, it has been quite a while since I’ve been to the movies and we discovered that a lot has changed in that time!  We like to go to Tinseltown in Gates – it is a nice, clean theater, easy to get to, not as far as going into the city further, and their prices are lower than other theaters! The early bird matinee used to be $5.25 and it is now $6.25 – hhhmmm – well, OK, still less expensive than most other theaters……you have to choose your seat when you buy the ticket at the ticket window – thought that was pretty odd, but we went with the flow…….the concession prices went up, too – a medium popcorn and medium soda used to cost me about $10-ish but cost $12-something, today…….and, the best change, they renovated the theater to include some awesome leather recliners for the seats!!! YES!!! Big, wide, comfortable seats with a powered recliner! That means a lot less seats in each screen room, but that’s OK (probably why all the prices went up – they gotta pay for them fancy seats and offset having less viewers per showing)! Anyway……loved the new seats and Tinseltown is still the best theater for us!

So……I wanted to see Fences because it looked like a  powerful story and I think Denzel Washington and Viola Davis are amazing actors – a sure bet! Well, it ended up not being quite what I expected. Yes, it was a very powerful story and followed the basic premise I got out of the movie trailers…..and Denzel and Viola didn’t disappoint in the acting category! But, it was very DARK and deeply intense. Don’t get me wrong – I liked it and as I was watching it, thought that I would love to read the book to learn more about the characters and the back stories that rarely make it into movies (but, alas, I read in the closing credits that it is based on a play, not a book, so guess I won’t be reading it). But, it lacked some break in the tension and strong drama – a little lightheartedness and happiness for the characters would have made it easier to watch……but, I do understand why the writers didn’t take the characters down that road.

It is the story of a man’s struggle with his demons and life as a black man in the 1950s Pittsburgh – just doing for and relating to his family the best he knew how, but he never had any decent role models to learn how to do it any better. Denzel Washington impeccably portrays Troy Maxson, who had a rough life after being forced to go out on his own at the age of 14, robbed to get by, had a son and married at a very young age, and was sent to prison for 15 years for killing a man during a robbery. When he got out of prison, he discovered his wife left with his son and he had nothing. He met his second wife, Rose – brilliantly played by Viola Davis – and turned his life around. He was good at baseball and played for the Negro League, but was deemed too old for the majors…..although, he is convinced that he was passed over because of the color of his skin and holds a grudge over it the rest of his life. Don’t worry – no major spoilers there……all this is told through Troy’s wild stories about the old days. The current story starts when Troy is in his 50s, married to Rose, and with a teenage son – Cory, played by Jovan Adepo – who he doesn’t really know how to be a father to, but knows he wants to be sure he grows up to not follow in his footsteps, causing massive tension and animosity between them.

Three other main characters add an interesting dimension to the story and to Troy and Rose’s life: Jim Bono (played by Stephen McKinley Henderson) – Troy’s best friend from his time in prison; Troy’s estranged son from his first marriage, Lyons Maxson (played by Russell Hornsby); and Troy’s older brother, Gabe Maxson (another wonderful performance by Mykelti Williamson – best known for his role as Bubba in Forrest Gump), who suffered a head injury in World War II that left him mentally impaired.

There was very little about Troy Maxson that I liked…..I think the fact that he was a hard working, proud man who took his responsibilities very seriously was his most redeeming quality. Otherwise, he was not a very likable person in how he treated his wife and son and how he held on to ancient grudges of the past and let them control his life. But, that is life sometimes……I may not have liked Troy, but I understood why he was the way he was.

The characters interactions and relationships were intense, to say the least, and there was amazing chemistry between them all. All the actors gave stunning performances and had me feeling I was watching a real family going through some of the most gut wrenching real life situations in difficult times. I will not be at all surprised if Denzel Washington and Viola Davis are nominated for all the best actor awards and (without knowing any other possible nominees) think they deserve to actually win!!!

All-in-all, it was a good story, well told, and superbly acted. But, it was a tad too dark and intense for a morning matinee for my taste and I’m not sure whether I liked the ending or not….I’m the sappy kind that hopes for an ending where everyone is happy and it all gets tied up in a pretty blue ribbon and, while the ending was absolutely appropriate to the rest of the story, it didn’t satisfy my sappy side. I’m very glad I went to see it and got quite emotional (read: cried my eyes out) in several of the scenes. While I would have liked some levity to break up the tension, I do understand that in the lives of these characters, levity was hard to come by…..although, there were a couple lines that I snickered at a little….albeit a very little! 🙂 I give the writer a lot of credit – he told it like it is, made it as real as it gets, and found a way to tell it without falling into the trap of trying to appeal the romantic side of his audiences – good job!  I rate it a solid 4 out of 5 because of the story and the acting – can’t deny it was very good in those aspects – but only recommend it for people who like tense, serious, real-life drama stories – it isn’t for people who want a sentimental story with a happy ending and will be disappointed if they don’t get it. Check out the clip of the trailer below!

The rest of our day was spent having lunch and shopping. It was a wonderful Thursday with a good friend and I enjoyed every minute of it……hope we get the chance to have more days like this in the coming year!

2016 Daily Photos – December 23-25 – Merry Christmas!!!

Merry Christmas Morning to you all!

On this most joyous of mornings, I find myself a bit melancholy as I navigate through my first Christmas without Mom at the dinner table and sitting by the tree with a mound of gifts and torn wrapping around her. I understand that is to be expected and I did indulged myself in a good cry before church to give a proper amount of acknowledgement to my pain and honor the grief I still feel each and every day – burying it or trying to ignore it is not being fair to myself. But, I also am choosing to not dwell on what is missing this Christmas – and in life, in general. Instead, I am choosing to focus on the many blessings in my life and on my wonderful memories and on the love and joy that fills my heart.

So, with that said……I wish you all a joyous celebration of Christmas!

Here are the Daily Photos taken on December 18-19. If you’re paying attention, the last Daily Photo post ended on December 16, so that means I missed taking a photo on December 17. That was because I was off adventuring all day seeing the Cirque show I wrote about in the last post. So, I have a good excuse…..hehehe!

“Sneaking Berries”

My weeping crab apple tree was still loaded with berries and I was beginning to wonder why the birds hadn’t stripped it clean, yet. Well, a swarm of robins and other little sweeties danced around in a feeding frenzy on Monday morning and by mid-day, it was clean as a whistle!!!

While I’ve got your attention…..you might have noticed (or maybe not, which is why I’m mentioning it here) that I put a new link in my blogroll on the right hand side of the page. FIVE DAYS TILL CHRISTMAS!!!

Holiday Entertainment At Its Best

A wonderful part of the holiday season is the availability of holiday entertainment…..from local concerts to major stage productions. I do so enjoy attending events that are holiday themed with music that sparks the spirit and inner child we all have deep down inside.

Yesterday – Saturday, Dec 17th – I had the pleasure of attending just such an event! I joined a group of fellow retirees a few months ago called the Busy Buddies. The group goes on day trips, such as theater productions and other adventures, and larger trips together. It has been great fun, so far! Yesterday, we all boarded a bus that took us to the Rochester Auditorium Theater to see the Cirque Dreams Holidaze show…..and it was FABULOUS!!!

First…..just sitting in the Rochester Auditorium Theater brought back so many incredible memories for me. I haven’t been in this theater in probably 30 years or so, because of the years that I spent in NC and I haven’t had an opportunity to go since I’ve been back home. But, I used to love to go there to see Broadway stage shows and smaller concerts. As I sat there waiting for the show to start, I pictured sitting in the front row balcony (a favorite spot for stage shows) to see such shows as Peter Pan and Neil Simon’s Their Playing Our Song, among so many others! I was taken back to a night my Mom, my Dad, and I saw Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, and Earnest Tubb perform – we sat about 3 rows back and were mesmerized by these country greats! I listened to the music in my head, remembered the pretty dresses Loretta wore, and smiled as I envisioned Earnest Tubb turn his guitar over at the end of the concert to show the word “Thanks” written across the back of the guitar. I also could picture the three of us passing through the doorway to the right of the stage where Loretta had a table to greet her fans and sign autographs – she talked to each and every one of her fans like they were old, dear friends that she’d known forever…..Mom was so thrilled to get to meet and talk with her! So many memories flooded in! It warmed my heart to just be there!

And, then there was the show! WOW! If you’ve never seen a Cirque du Soleil show, you really should! I took Mom to see the Beatles themed Cirque show LOVE! in Las Vegas several years ago and it was absolutely amazing! The Cirque Dreams Holidaze show is holiday themed with dancing ornaments, reindeer, gingerbread men, and more and traditional and new holiday songs as a backdrop to the incredible acrobatic feats of the Cirque performers. I was on the edge of my seat and in awe the entire two hours of the show! There was so much going on on the stage at all times it was hard to decide what to focus on! And the performances were stupendous! I loved every minute of it, but the finale brought me to tears……a women with the most beautiful voice sang one of the loveliest arrangements of Oh Holy Night I’ve ever heard while a man and women in white performed an aerial ballet that was simply stunning!!! It was a show to remember!

After the show, we all got back on the bus and headed to dinner at the Lamplighter restaurant north of the Ridge in Greece. Dinner was fantastic and we had the best time talking and enjoying our time with old and new friends! I’m so very happy I had this opportunity and look forward to many more chances to enjoy the company of my new Busy Buddies friends!

Of course, there was no flash photography allowed, but I can leave you with this youtube clip of the show……enjoy! And, when it comes back around next year, be sure to put it on your calendar!

2016 Daily Photos – December 14-16…..And More!!!

So…..I’m jamming this post with more than just my Daily Photos (although those will be first up). We had our first blizzard of the season this week….and, it is still coming down, so I’m also including photos I took over the past few days of that event! Enjoy!

At long last…..the wreath I made has been hung on a door…..just not the door I planned!

So, here’s the story……I was having a new front and storm door installed (also a new back and storm door, but that doesn’t impact this story), so I had to wait until that was done before I hung my wreath. It was done last Friday, but it wouldn’t fit between the doors, so I needed to secure it with wire – which I was sure I had, but couldn’t find, so had to go purchase some! I got the wire and attempted to put the wreath up on the new storm door…..but, the hanger thingy I got wouldn’t go over the top of the door because of the gas cylinder. I played around and got it to work, but then the door wouldn’t shut!!! UGH!!! So……the wreath ended up being displayed proudly on my garage door!!! Not exactly where I wanted it, but it is up and I love it!!! Probably should have trimmed it some to make it less wild and uneven looking, but it is my first attempt at making a wreath and, like most proud Mamas, I look past the flaws to the perfection no one else sees and love it warts and all!!! 🙂
