Where would we be today if he had not identified and defined the seven words you can never say on TV???? I especially enjoy listening to his comparison of Baseball and Football – it never gets old for me!!!
He was truly unique – he got his start in the 60s, but became an icon of the 70s and his incredible sense of humor is still appreciated to this day!
Rest in peace, dear George – and, by the way, I would venture to guess that those seven words probably shouldn’t be used where you’re going…….
The focus of this post is Radio Shows that have caught my attention in the last few days:
First is Billy Liggett’s new radio talk show, “The Rant”, that is on locally every Wednesday morning from 8:00-9:00 starting this past Weds. Sadly, I can’t hear it live, but have listened to the taping of it and it was actually pretty interesting to listen to! Click here for a link to Billy’s blog to get more info on his radio show.
But the one that prompted this post is one I heard about on the CBS show Sunday Morning this morning. It is a news quiz show on NPR that sounds really cool — I’m gonna have to find out how I can catch this one!!! Apparently, it is a live radio show called “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” with a panel of celebrities that answer questions about really bazaar news headlines and the results are hysterical!!!! Click here for a link to the CBS Sunday morning article or click here for a link to the “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” web site.
Update: I just checked it out — “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” airs on UNC NPR station 91.5 on Sundays at 11:00-12:00 noon and on Saturdays at 12:00-1:00 pm – I can’t wait to check it out.
But this morning, I noticed one that I’m not sure how to take — the location just said “United States” – no city or state and just a generic IP address – no specific internet provider. The google search they ran took them to a post I did a while ago about a strange dream I had about the girls (my dogs, for those of you who don’t know who “the girls” are – I just wanna make that clear) and at the end I mentioned that I woke up to “the girls licking my face to get me to wake up and start the day” or something like that…….. What I found odd (and maybe a little disturbing) is that the google search key word that got them there was “girls licking my face” — hhhmmm……. sorry, but I somehow think that my blog didn’t give them the type of info they were searching for………………..he-he-he-he
On page D2, he sums up his weekly column by announcing that the Herald will be doing a 5-part series on “hidden dining gems”. And, guess who is going to be FIRST to be highlighted??? Myra’s Kitchen on Colon Road across from Turner Chapel!!! He certainly picked the right one to kick off this series — it is definitely a hidden gem that needs to be put on Sanford’s radar!!!
If you’ve read this blog at all, you know this is one of MY favorite restaurants and I try to raise awareness of Myra’s around town whenever I get a chance! Since it is close to where I work, it is a popular lunch location for many of my co-workers. I typically go for dinner so that I can relax and not be so rushed and I almost always run into folks I know!
Since I have been mentioning it in this blog, I have turned several other local bloggers and blog readers onto Myra’s. Amy Burns has given them a nod on her blog, as well. I’ve also notice more and more people finding my blog by doing a google search on “Myra’s Kitchen Sanford NC”!!! Myra and Buddy have said they get folks coming in to say that they “just had to check it out cause we’ve been reading about you in every one’s blogs”!!! (Power to the bloggers!!! ha-ha-ha)
So – the word is getting out there!!! Thank you to Jon and the Herald for giving it the next level boost to bring them out in the open!!!! Double Thumbs Up — I Love It!!!
I hope to run into more of you at Myra’s – I know Myra and Buddy will be glad to meet you and make you feel like you just walked into their home and pulled up a chair in their kitchen for a helping of whatever they got cookin’ up that day – and don’t miss out on the desserts!!!
Luckily, the rain has passed and I won’t get drenched putting the top up on my way out for work……
I got home from work and took care of the girls and then we played some and I checked emails and blogs! Then I went to Cafe 121 and had a marvelous, peaceful dinner! Then, I was going to go home, but the band at Depot Park caught my ear…… When I went in for dinner, they were just getting started and they were playing The Eagles’ “Peaceful, Easy Feeling” and they sounded good! I thought about eating outside on the patio, but thought it might get buggy (I wanted to eat dinner, not “BE” dinner). So, I went inside and ate. Then, when I left to go home, they were playing ANOTHER Eagles song – “Take It To The Limit”!!! That was it — I had to hang around and listen for a while! I got in my car, put the top down, and sat right there in the “cheap seats” across the railroad tracks in front of Cafe 121 and listened away……the night was so pretty, the weather was perfect, there were no bugs (guess I coulda ate outside after all) and the music was GREAT!!!! They played a lot of 70s rock — The Eagles, The Doobie Brothers, Bruce Springsteen, The Doors, etc……..my kinda music!!!! It mellowed me right out and I sat there until they were done!!!!
While I sat there, it was a real joy to see so many people enjoying downtown Sanford — not only the very LARGE crowd that was actually IN Depot Park, but also all kinds of people walking Chatham Street with ice cream cones from Yarborough’s, families crossing the tracks to go hear the music, kids on the train in Depot Park, couples walking hand-in-hand — just the way it should be!!!!! It was the perfect picture of an old time small town setting — we coulda been in a Norman Rockwell painting…………………….really!!!!
He was surprised to find what he thought was a dead BAT in his kitchen sink!!! He got a garbage bag and began to cover the “dead” bat and scoop it up to toss it out. Well, when he got it scooped up into the bag, it began to flutter and bit through the bag and latched onto his thumb!!! OMG!!!
He managed to get it secured in the bag and wrapped it up and put it aside. He then came in to work and made some calls. Animal Control in the area he lives said it was good that the bat was still alive and they wanted to go get it so that they could test it for rabies – but, they did tell him that the last few they tested had POSITIVE results!!!! His doctor said to wait for the results of that before they decide if he needs any medical attention or rabies shots!!! He ran home to meet the Animal Control folks to give them the bagged bat……
So — he is waiting on pins and needles to find out if he has to go through the rabies treatment (uugghh – not pleasant)!!!
I am waiting on pins and needles to find out if I need to start wearing garlic necklaces to work to protect myself from a vampire co-worker!!!
I was sooooooooo looking forward to going to camp – it was 2 weeks at Silver Lake in NY – an absolutely beautiful area! The first couple of days were fun, but it was the first time I had ever been away from home for so long and it was starting to wear on me! I forget how old I was – 9 or 10, maybe???? Anyway, on about the 3rd day or so, I fell and hit my elbow on a big rock. My arm bruised up and it was really painful to bend and straighten my arm! I wanted to call my Mom — they wouldn’t let me!!! It was a rule – no contact outside the camp until the weekend that connected the two weeks when parents were invited to come see what we had learned! Well, I couldn’t understand why being hurt wasn’t an exception! Apparently, they didn’t think I was hurt bad enough to warrant telling my Mom!!! So – I cried myself to sleep and couldn’t participate in some of the activities for the next couple of days because my arm was badly bruised!
My Mom came for the weekend visit and I begged her to let me come home — although she was not at all happy that they didn’t call to tell her what happened, she felt it would be best for me to stay and continue with the camp experience! So, she left after encouraging me to try and have a good time and I started out the second week!
The second week was actually much better — my Mom and the camp counselors were right — my arm wasn’t as sore — I learned to shoot a bow and arrow (and did pretty good) — I won a prize for my marksmanship with a BB gun (I had used one many times before camp) — I swam in the beautiful Silver Lake — I made several things in the arts & crafts sessions — and I met some really nice girls! So – it wasn’t ALL bad — but I will never look back on the experience with fond memories……..and I never attempted to go to summer camp again – that was my one and ONLY experience of that kind!!!! If that makes me a cry baby, so be it!!! ha-ha-ha
Case in point: Every morning my alarm starts going off about 5:00 am! I have to do that because my body has a tendency to automatically swing my arm over and hit the snooze for at least a half hour or more without ever even waking up! The first time I actually “hear” the alarm and am aware of hitting the snooze is about 5:30 am! I, then, try to not let the girls know I’m actually “conscious” for another 3 or 4 snooze hits! As soon as they think it is about time I wake up, they start whining and taking turns poking or licking at me to get me to get out of bed and let them out! When they come back in, we all go in the den so I can read the paper and get myself fully awake before I start the morning (I am NOT a morning person — in any way, shape, or form)!!! They give me about 20-30 minutes to do this — they lay quietly or gently play on the floor beside me and let me have my “I just need to get my barrings” time! They seem to know when I log off the Sanford Herald and start to go on to other things (check emails, blogs, etc.) because as soon as I do, they start taking turns nudging me and telling me that enough is enough, they want breakfast!!! I usually go get them some breakfast, let them back out to play, and start getting ready for work………..that’s our routine and they make me stick to it!!!!
This morning, I was just not ready to get the day started!!! I stalled with a google search I “needed” to do and it was really important that I leave a blog comment or two – you know, important stuff!!! Oh, the girls were persistent!!!! Every couple of minutes, they would take turns digging at my leg or poking me with their nose or wiggling while looking up adoringly at me or SOMETHING to get my attention!!! I talked to them and acknowledged them each time, but they knew I’m was not giving in!!! Then, I looked at them and said “OK, OK already!” — they took that to mean “OK, I’m on my way to the kitchen!!!” They all instantly turned and headed that way in a mad dash — but, they know me all too well — they got just outside the door of the den and all three stopped and looked back to see if I was following them!!! When they saw I wasn’t, they let out (in perfect unison and amazing pitch, I might add) a loud attention getting bark and then a frustrated growl…………………………how much plainer could they be???? The “bark” was “HEY!!!” and the “frustrated growl” was “are you coming or not???”!!!! ha-ha-ha
My girls — I think I’ll keep them!!! ha-ha-ha
