I think we need to lobby Congress to get them to write a bill and get it passed to enact the standard of three day weekends – let’s start a campaign to make EVERY Monday part of the weekend! But, since the likelihood of our success is fairly slim, I’ll take all the long weekends I can get!
I was pretty lazy this weekend. I went to the movies in Cary (scroll down to the next post to read all about the two movies I saw), popped in at PetSmart to pick up some things for the girls, and did very little else…
Apparently, Sanford may be in for some snow tonight and tomorrow – a couple inches predicted with 4-6 possible! This news will make a lot of people around here happy – those who look forward to the one or two snow falls we get here a year.
I have a pet peeve that really got to me this week – so, let me pull out that soap box and step up on it…..OK, here goes:
This past week also brought news of the airplane that landed in the Hudson River. Due to situations and people all being perfectly aligned, there were no casualties!!!! One thing that all those people surely came to realize is also something we should all take to heart — Don’t wait for a potentially life altering event to appreciate the good things in your life! With all the economic woes in the world right now, it is a much needed wake up call for everyone — things could be worse and there is always something or someone in your life to be thankful for. And, if you give it the thought it deserves, you just may find that you have a LOT to be thankful for!
So — as for today – the last day of my nice three day weekend – I am still thinking about what I want to do! A visit to the grocery store is likely in order – I am out of several things that I need to pick up. I’ll just let the rest unfold as I go……
I went into Cary on Saturday to see a couple movies I wanted to see that haven’t come to Sanford, yet! I decided to see “Last Chance Harvey” with Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson and “Doubt” with Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams. Overall, it was a nice day and an enjoyable time at the movies. Here are my reviews:

The first movie I saw was “Last Chance Harvey”. This is the story of New Yorker Harvey Shine, a commercial jingle writer who is on his last chance to nab a big account and save the job he has grown to hate. The weekend before an important meeting, he travels to London to attend his daughter’s wedding, but promises to be back Monday for the meeting and assures big results. His estranged wife is remarried and it quickly becomes obvious that he hasn’t had a particularly close relationship with his daughter over recent years. When he is treated as an outsider at the rehearsal dinner, he tells his daughter that he will need to leave right after the wedding to make an important meeting. She takes the opportunity to tell him that she has decided to ask her step-father to give her away at the ceremony instead of him! In an attempt to hide his devastation, he sits at the rear of the church and skips the reception so that he can make an earlier flight home. Unfortunately, traffic causes him to miss the flight and he can’t get another one until the next day, which will cause him to miss his meeting. He calls his boss to explain and is fired over the phone! While drowning his sorrows at the airport bar, he strikes up a conversation with Kate, portrayed by Emma Thompson. The conversation takes them through a day of sharing, friendship, reconciliations, and a new chance at a happy life for both Harvey and Kate. The film tells a warm story of someone who comes to a point in his life where he has lost everything and finds his way back to the parts that are important to him. ALL the characters – even the ancillary ones that include Kate’s overbearing mother and the step-father, portrayed by James Brolin – were genuine and believable. Harvey and his daughter are successful in showing every emotion they are feeling, regardless of what they are outwardly saying based on what they think is expected for the situation. I enjoyed the movie – the only negative is that it was a little slow. I give it a very strong B+.
The second movie I saw was “Doubt” – before I get into that review, I have a funny story to tell…I found the screen that “Doubt” was playing on – it had the name above the door. I sat there waiting for the movie to start and the theater filled in with a fairly large number of people. The previews came on and I was thinking that they didn’t match the movie – usually, the previews are for other movies that the anticipated audience for the main feature will likely also be interested in. The previews were for kids movies and comedies targeted to the teenage audiences. I made a mental note of it, but didn’t really think about it much. Then, the main feature started and one of the producers listed was Adam Sandler – I started to really think something was wrong here! Then, it was clear — the movie that was playing was “Paul Blart, Mall Cop” — not “Doubt”!!! ha-ha-ha I immediately figured I went into the wrong theater, so I got up and left to find the right one – but, I confirmed that I WAS in the right theater…..then, others were coming out, too! So, we ALL were expecting “Doubt”!! We told one of the employees and they brought the manager – he explained that they had the wrong movie queued up and it would be about 5 minutes before they could get the right one going. He told us he would be outside after the movie to give us all a free pass to another movie as we leave the show. COOL……

So, on with the review…. “Doubt” is set in a Bronx, NY Catholic School in 1964. The head principal is Sister Aloysius, played by Meryl Streep, who rules the school with fear and strict discipline. Sister James, played by Amy Adams, teaches history with a softer approach. Father Flynn, Philip Seymour Hoffman, feels the church and school needs to be brought out of the dark ages and attempts to have a more personal approach with the parishioners and students. When Sister James confides in Sister Aloysius that she feels Father Flynn has been paying a little too much personal attention to the only black student in the school, the two nuns confront Father Flynn with their suspicions. The story goes on to tell how Sister Aloysius makes it her mission to unearth the truth and expose Father Flynn – regardless of the fact that she has no physical evidence and is only going on her “moral certainty”. She will do anything to ensure Father Flynn is removed from her parish, including things that are not very nun-like – in her words “to fix a wrong, you sometimes need to go further from God”. The story is compelling and emotional. The acting and characters are superb. I thought it fell a little short by not going into some more detail – it danced around some of the parts that I thought might have added complexity that was lacking. I also felt like the movie was left “undone” — it wrapped it up and didn’t leave me hanging, but it still just didn’t feel “finished” — it still left “doubt”, which I realize was the whole point to the movie, but I left with questions that I thought could have been addressed better – not necessarily answered, but…..I don’t know – it just didn’t feel finished! So, I rate this one a solid B and recommend that maybe DVD or cable is a better way to go with this one – definitely worth watching, but maybe not worth the theater prices!
“Hamlet”, “Bride Wars”, manicure, pedicures, hair cuts, and I still had time to relax, veg out on the couch, play with the girls, and enjoy the lazy parts of the weekend! WHEW!!! It was all good – I’m sorry to see the weekend end!
It all started after work on Friday with my decision to go see “Hamlet” at the Temple Theater! I got home late and had a killer headache (not from the show – it started earlier and got worse as the night progressed because I didn’t eat any dinner), so I wish I had waited to write my review Saturday morning when I had more time and patience to think about it more! But, I didn’t want to forget the amazing experience, so I went ahead and wrote it before I hit the sack. But, there were two things I left off the list of parts that particularly hit me as what made it so special for me – as it was, I listed three things — here are the other two:
Saturday, I lounged around all morning and then went to see “Bride Wars” with Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson. I was really looking forward to seeing this movie and it didn’t disappoint me! It is just my type of fun movie — I laughed, got a tad teary eyed in one scene, and left feeling good! It was fun and silly and made for an enjoyable afternoon. The rest of the audience must have felt the same way – they were all laughing out loud, too!
I did some pampering of myself, too — had a really good mani/pedi and got a much needed haircut and color!
I went to Cafe 121 Sunday morning for brunch and had a GREAT meal!!! I tend to forget that they are open on Sunday’s for brunch and really should do something to remind myself so that I go more often! I haven’t been to Cafe 121 much since before Christmas – once when Mom was here and I met Alison there for lunch on Friday, so I thought it was about time!!! I also haven’t been to Myra’s at all since before Christmas — I need to get over there sometime soon, too!
I watched an incredibly boring and bazaar movie that I got through NetFlix – it was called “Match Point” with Scarlett Johanssen. The write up sounded really intriguing – a suspense drama – and the viewer ratings averaged 3.5 stars with critic ratings averaging around 4 stars! I thought this one had to be good! WRONG! It was slow, boring, and ordinary – just when it started to perk up and get good, it ended – strangely!!! It was a wasted 2 hours – I’m sorry I sat there the whole time watching it!
The weekend was a great cap to a week that was crammed full of getting back into the swing of things after being off work for a little over 2 weeks!!! It sounds like a hectic weekend, but it really wasn’t — I didn’t get dressed and leave the house until almost 3:00 on Saturday and until around noon on Sunday! The mornings and evenings were filled with playing with the girls, snoozing on the couch, and just being lazy!!! I loved it!!! ha-ha-ha
Movies I’m looking forward to coming out:
“New In Town” w/ Renee Zellwenger
“He’s Just Not Into You” w/ an all star cast
“Confessions of a Shop-a-holic”
Now, I need to get some sleep so I can start a whole new week……here we go again!
I went to see Hamlet at the Temple Theater tonight. I’m not really sure why I decided to go tonight – it wasn’t in the plans – I was trying to decide which matinee I was going to attend while it is running and then talk some friends into going with me. But, I got home from work, took care of the girls, and about 6:30, I just decided to go tonight – no time for dinner or to see who might be able to join me!!! The show starts at 8:00, so I changed clothes, freshened up, and headed out!
I’m really glad I went tonight – they had a HUGE crowd – the house was almost completely full!!! It was a thrill to see so many people filing in to see the show! The last several shows I’ve been to were barely 1/2 full….I don’t know if it was the show that attracted them or if it was all the publicity and promotion they have had lately because the Temple is struggling and may close its doors if things don’t pick up!!! It doesn’t matter what brought them in – they were there – that’s all that matters!!! And it was a wonderful sight!!!
I have to admit, when I read the season line up this year, I originally didn’t plan to go to Hamlet! I really enjoy Shakespeare and, although I was sure the Temple would put on an incredible production, it breaks my heart to see alternate interpretations and I just wasn’t sure what to expect. I much prefer to see Shakespeare the way Shakespeare intended it! Then, when I went to the Winter Wonderettes, Peggy Taphorn talked about the production and the use of high tech special effects, etc. and I’ve heard a lot about it in the past week — so, I had to see for myself and just hope that it wasn’t too far “out there”!!!
That said……I found this production to be very enjoyable!!! Yep – they modernized it – instead of period costumes, they wore updated clothing, read messages on cell phones, carried modern guns, and looked like anyone you might run into on the street. The language was, for the most part, old English, as it should be, which made the clothing and stuff even more out of place. That bothered me, but absolutely didn’t ruin it for me!!! The technology used to enhance the experience, while fairly bazaar a couple of times, was really incredible!!! While this sounds like I must have had major mixed feelings, I really didn’t — I thought it was very well done!! I just feel I should include the points that “could” have really spoiled it, if it wasn’t so good as a whole – just to make the point that it WAS so good!!!
So – what made it so good that I was able to overlook the things that I usually take much more issue with?
The Temple’s Hamlet is amazing — you really need to go see for yourself!!! Take note, though, that if I enjoyed it this much despite the things that usually irritate me, it HAD to be good!!! ha-ha-ha
Go see it — support the Temple Theater — get attendance up and keep the Temple open so that we can all enjoy the rest of the season and know that more seasons will follow!!! It is a true treasure for our community — let’s make sure it doesn’t end here!!! Do what you can to help! You won’t regret it!!!
Today’s “Dennis” comic in the Herald brought back a memory from my childhood — it is a really funny story to tell it now, but at the time, it was pretty bad….ha-ha-ha! The comic shows Dennis sitting in the corner and the caption reads “If your gonna punish me for saying it, at least you could tell me what it means”! Here is the story:
I don’t remember how old I was, but we were living with my Grandparents, so it must have been somewhere around 7 or 8 or so…. My brother, Kevin, – two years younger than me – and I were in the front hallway playing a word game – we selected a word and then took turns going through the alphabet changing the first letter of the word to make a new word – harmless so far! Well, one of the words we chose was “duck” — when we got to the letter “F”, it was my turn!!!!! (I won’t tell you what that word was – I’m NOT getting into trouble again when Mom reads this…you’ll just have to figure it out for yourself)
Well, we were at the bottom of the stairs and Mom was upstairs and she just happened to start down the stairs when she heard me take my turn — she made it to the bottom in record time and I “got it”!!!! It wasn’t a pretty picture!!! I wasn’t sure why I shouldn’t have said that word, but I knew it wasn’t something I would ever say again!!!
Then, a few days later, I was in the back yard of a friend of mine who lived down the street (and who became a cousin by marriage much later)! She asked me why I got into trouble and I told her the story – just so that she would know not to EVER do that!!! Well, her mother went to the sink in her kitchen at just that moment and heard me through the open kitchen window — I was banned from playing with Karen, her Mom walked me home and told my Mom, and I “got it” AGAIN!!!! It was a long time before I was allowed to go back to Karen’s house to play!!!
Moral of the story — timing is EVERYTHING!!! ha-ha-ha
Other than annual visits and routine grooming / day care dates, the girls haven’t had to go to the vet in a long time!!! Then, over the past couple of weeks they made up for it – big time!!!
I used to spend a lot of time with Dr. Cindy – God Bless Her!!! Puddles had a lot of medical issues in the 5 or 6 years before she passed on and her early years were a struggle getting her on the right track, too — in between was fairly calm, but we had periodic episodes that required medical attention. Then, Katie came along and she was in really bad shape when I rescued her – it took us a long time to get her health straightened out! Megan and Amy were, surprisingly healthy – other than general health checks, getting on a vaccination schedule, a good dose of worms, and the having them spayed (all normal puppy stuff), they didn’t need much help!
So, once Katie was all healthy and on track, I had a nice long hiatus from vet visits and bills…..just routine stuff to keep them from developing any problems!
But – December changed all that — hopefully only temporarily!!!
First, for routine beauty maintenance: all three spent the day at Rae-Zor for baths, mani/pedi’s, and play time on the 18th.
Then, on the 21st, Katie hurt her right front leg. We’re not sure what happened – whether they were playing a little too rough or if she just got stuck by a stick or something in the yard – it doesn’t matter – the result was a small puncture wound in her leg that swelled all up and started to get an infection! I took her in to All Animals on the 22nd to get some antibiotics and pain medicine. After a day or so, she started walking normally and the swelling went down. The 10 days of antibiotics seemed to do the trick – no relapse or other problems! It healed nicely and all is fine, now!
On the 22nd, Megan and Amy had their routine annual visit — other than gaining a little more weight than they should have since their last visit, they were given a clean bill of health!
Then, on the 31st, all three were outside playing and they found a lizard or some other little critter — they were going nuts over it, so I got them inside to calm them down. Once inside, I noticed that Megan’s left front foot was bleeding – a lot! She was licking at it and I had a hard time getting her to let me see what was wrong. When I finally got a look at it, I could see that she must have caught her nail on something out there and it ripped out leaving nothing but the meaty quick! OUCH!!! I called All Animals and they were about to close, but told me to bring her right in! They cut back the quick and bandaged her up. They brought her in the exam room to wait with me while they put her meds together and she started bleeding through the bandages!! They had to take her back and remove the bandage and put on a fresh one and made it thicker!!! She was on pain meds and antibiotics. She didn’t feel well and had a hard time walking on the bandage (the pain probably contributed to that, as well), so she just laid around and slept a lot that night and the next day.
I was supposed to take the bandage off on the 1st, but she wouldn’t let me touch it — growled and bit at me! So, I called to see if they would take it off for me. I went in on the 2nd to have it removed, but we decided it was probably better to rebandage it and make it easier for me to take off after the weekend. She still wasn’t very interested in being active and just slept a lot, but it was a lot easier for her to walk on!!!
I took it off on Sunday evening – just clipped the top and pulled it off like a sock! ha-ha!! It is looking good and healing nicely!! She’s still on the antibiotics to be sure it doesn’t get infected, but seems fine and is acting like her old self now…..
So — between Dec 18th and Jan 2nd, I had FIVE visits to All Animals and Rae-Zor to care for the girls — routine and urgent needs!!! WHEW!!! Let’s hope that is the end of it for a while…..
Here are some photos of Megan in her bandages — the white bandage is the first heavy duty one and the blue one is the replacement – poor baby!!!

OK – so this is it – life gets back to normal…
Mom is back home and settled in – the house was pretty quiet yesterday! I took her to the airport early in the morning for her 10:15 flight and we said our good-byes! When I got home, Katie noticed that Mom didn’t come back with me and wanted to know where she was — she starred at the garage door for a little bit waiting for her to come through it, then she searched all over the house as if she thought maybe she got past her, then she sniffed and whined at the crack at the bottom of the door of the room she slept in while she was here – when I opened the door so she could see she wasn’t in there, she sniffed every inch of the room looking for her!!! Megan and Amy weren’t as obvious – if they noticed she left, but didn’t come back, they didn’t show it! But, Katie noticed — and so did I!!!
We really got “movie’d out” while she was here!!! We saw Cadillac Records, Marley and Me, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Seven Pounds, and Four Christmasesat the theater. We also watched several Netflix movies and some on cable!!!
So, today I head back to work after being off since noon on Dec 18th! WOW – I do believe that is the longest I’ve ever been off work! It was perfect cause Mom arrived on the 19th and went back yesterday – so I was able to be off the entire 2 week and 2 day trip! I usually don’t have that luxury, unless she’s here for a shorter time! BUT – if she wasn’t here, a vacation that long would have drove me NUTS — I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t work — go stir crazy, I guess!
Here I go — back to the old grind — getting full bore into a new and, hopefully, wonderful year! Catch ya on the flip side!
Today is one for the trash can!!! It is foggy, rainy, and yucky outside – I just took Mom to the airport, ending our great two week visit – and it is the last day of a very long holiday from work meaning that tomorrow is “back to the old grind day”! I think I’ll veg out and watch Life Time movies all day!!!
Well, another year is in the history books and a new one has begun…WOW – time just sails by in the blink of an eye! Here are my New Year’s Day reflections and a look forward…
2008 – Almost everyone I talk to mentions to some degree about how 2008 was a bad year for them. Even earlier in the year, before the economy and other issues started hitting everyone so hard, people were thinking it wasn’t one of their better years. For me personally, 2008 was a bland year — some good, some not so good, but I don’t have much that sticks out as being events that will make 2008 truly memorable in a good way!
2009 – So, what do I think 2009 may have in store for me? I hope it will bring more positive excitement – be less bland – and give me a ton of things to write about in my annual Christmas letter to family and friends!!! Some of the things I hope to do to make 2009 a great year for me, personally, are:
In general:
I wish everyone a happy, healthy, prosperous new year!
The previews for this movie don’t give a lot of details to clue you in to what this movie is about. The write up on Yahoo Movies is just as vague: “Ben Thomas is an IRS agent with a fateful secret who embarks on an extraordinary journey of redemption by forever changing the lives of seven strangers.” So, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but the intrigue made this movie one that had to go on our “to do” list during Mom’s visit. Well, we went to see it today — here’s my review:
I won’t spoil the movie by giving too many details, but the basic premise is that Will Smith plays a man who feels he needs to redeem himself for a horrible accident that claimed the lives of seven people by significantly changing the lives of seven strangers. The movie starts with Will Smith’s voice stating that the world was created in 7 days and in 7 seconds he shattered his world! The opening scene is him calling 911 to report a suicide – his own! Then, it gets REALLY confusing — he bounces around between current events and flashbacks in random order and no real logic or way to tell what is now and what is then….the first 45 minutes or so (maybe as much as the first 1/2 of the 1 hr 58 min movie) is painful — confusing mix of dots that just don’t seem to be connecting and little hope that they will ever connect!!! In that time, it is slow, boring, and uninteresting.
With that said — the movie, like the character, does redeem itself!!! Once you start to connect the dots and understand what is happening, it starts to get good. Not great – but good! The story is a very strange concept – both disturbing and heart wrenching at the same time. On one hand you wonder what sick mind thinks up such a story and on the other hand you are touched at the idea of what the character is doing to make such a profound difference in the lives of seven strangers! The final scenes are intense and sad, but the movie ends on an up beat that does leave you feeling that the character did a wonderful thing…….but getting there is long and takes a lot of work! You really do have to work at putting it all together – they attempt to tie it up for you at the end, but they still leave the viewer to try to remember what happened earlier in the movie to fill in some of the gaps.
I rate this one a B Minus— if I break the movie down, I would give the first 1/2 a C or less and the second 1/2 a B+ or “maybe” an A-! The overall story was good (again, not great, but good), the acting was a little flat, and that whole first 1/2 was just plain painful……..I recommend waiting and seeing it on DVD or cable – you might be disappointed if you pay full price at the theater to see it (we’re glad we paid matinee prices, but would have been happier if I got it on Netflix) — regardless of the venue, if you do decide to see this movie, don’t get discouraged during the first half — stick with it and pay attention — it will all make sense by the end….
