Oh The Memories…

Today’s “Dennis” comic in the Herald brought back a memory from my childhood — it is a really funny story to tell it now, but at the time, it was pretty bad….ha-ha-ha!  The comic shows Dennis sitting in the corner and the caption reads “If your gonna punish me for saying it, at least you could tell me what it means”!   Here is the story:

I don’t remember how old I was, but we were living with my Grandparents, so it must have been somewhere around 7 or 8 or so….  My brother, Kevin, – two years younger than me – and I were in the front hallway playing a word game – we selected a word and then took turns going through the alphabet changing the first letter of the word to make a new word – harmless so far!  Well, one of the words we chose was “duck” — when we got to the letter “F”, it was my turn!!!!!  (I won’t tell you what that word was – I’m NOT getting into trouble again when Mom reads this…you’ll just have to figure it out for yourself)

Well, we were at the bottom of the stairs and Mom was upstairs and she just happened to start down the stairs when she heard me take my turn — she made it to the bottom in record time and I “got it”!!!!   It wasn’t a pretty picture!!!  I wasn’t sure why I shouldn’t have said that word, but I knew it wasn’t something I would ever say again!!!

Then, a few days later, I was in the back yard of a friend of mine who lived down the street (and who became a cousin by marriage much later)!  She asked me why I got into trouble and I told her the story – just so that she would know not to EVER do that!!!  Well, her mother went to the sink in her kitchen at just that moment and heard me through the open kitchen window — I was banned from playing with Karen, her Mom walked me home and told my Mom, and I “got it” AGAIN!!!!  It was a long time before I was allowed to go back to Karen’s house to play!!!

Moral of the story — timing is EVERYTHING!!!  ha-ha-ha
