The price we pay for Spring

Spring is so beautiful — the colors, the weather, the newness of it all…..I love it!!!  But, it comes with a price.  Especially for those of us with allergies or asthma or both.  I am one of those people with BOTH!  So, while I adore spring and all its beauty, I suffer through most of it – at least the beginning of it!

I never knew you could actually “see” pollen before I moved south.  The first spring I was here, I saw all this greenish-yellow dust on everything – coating everything outside and filtering in through the windows to coat everything inside, too!  Then, when the rain comes, the dust turns into yucky looking greenish-yellow rivers and residue!  I asked around to find out what in the world it was and was told it was “pine pollen” — what?  really?  But, I found out they weren’t joking…..it was pine pollen!  And I soon learned to keep the windows shut until it was over and not to rub my eyes with hands that have touched anything outside before they were washed!  I once rubbed my eye outside and in less than an hour, I had an eye that was almost swollen shut with a HUGE puffy sack under my eye – it wasn’t sore, but it looked horrible!  It went down after a little while and some allergy medicine.

The other thing that really gets to me in the spring (and summer, really, but more so in the spring until I get used to it) is the smell of freshly cut grass!  I used to enjoy mowing grass and loved the smell of it, but had to completely stop doing it myself and try to stay away from breathing it in…..the event that forced that decision was a time not long after I bought my house and I was using the push mower on the hill in the front – it was well over 90 degrees and the combination of the heat, the smell of the grass, and the strain of pulling the mower up the hill sent me into a major asthma attack.  I didn’t have my inhaler with me, so I had to get into the house and find it in my purse…….the stress of trying to get myself help added to the attack and I came really close to a very serious medical situation!  Hence, I now rely on “the elves” to take care of my lawn and they put spreading blue juniper on the hill……

All this comes to mind today because I notice the pine pollen is starting to create a dusty blanket on things and my neighbor across the street was mowing his lawn when I got home.  I am having a hard time getting a good breath and my eyes are all scratchy like I have sand in them!

I already don’t open the house windows in the spring to keep the house “safe”, but I refuse to not put the top down and enjoy the breeze when driving the pony around town!  I just have to be careful once the pine pollen hits the peak and is the heaviest of the season — there will likely be a few days in the near future where I’ll need to stay inside and keep the top up!  But, for now, I’ll suffer through the light start while enjoying the top down when I drive!

Charmin of Choice

Toilet tissue is a very personal product – not only because of the reason you use it, but also because people have very personal opinions about brands, types, etc.  This past week, I purchased a large package of Scott toilet tissue instead of the usual Charmin.  I had a coupon for it and, even though I tried other brands in the past and always came back to Charmin, I decided to go with the price break.

Scott is a good product — a little less soft than Charmin, but not that noticable and not uncomfortable.  It definitely does the job and holds up to the demands of the task – so to speak.  So, you’d think I found a nice alternative to Charmin.  Right?

Wrong……there is one thing that drives me nuts about it and is the sole reason I likely won’t purchase it again.  It doesn’t have anything to do with whether or not it works or if I like the product itself.  Actually, it is OCD related……it doesn’t tear on the perforation!!!  There, I said it!  I have a thing for balance and evenness!  When the tissue doesn’t tear on the perforation, it leaves a jagged edge on the roll that eats at me unmercifully, driving me to the very edge of insanity.  I am driven to tear the jagged piece off and sometimes it takes multiple attempts, not only wasting the tissue, but also wasting my time and causing EXTREME anxiety and stress!!!  Uugghh!!! (OK, so I like to exaggerate to create drama – it is called writer’s prerogative or poetic license or something like that)

Moral of the story?  Lots of things factor in to the personal opinions that make up our preferences for products…….sometimes it is the product itself and sometimes it is the perception of performance and sometimes it is just a nit-picky little annoyance!

There’s an APP for that…

I’ve had my iPhone for about six months now – it seems like I’ve had it forever and have no idea how I lived without it!  I am still learning what all it will do and how to do it…..but am loving all the ways I use it now.  I literally have a computer in my purse that goes with me everywhere I go and gives me access to whatever I need wherever I am!  I get my emails, check my facebook, listen to my favorite music, access the internet, view my calendar, take great photos, instant message my buddies, keep a grocery list, post notes to myself……….oh, yeah – and I also make and receive phone calls!!!

Not long after I got it, I made the comment that “it does everything for me but slice my bread……but, I’m sure if I look hard enough, I could find an app for that, too.”.   APPS – short for Applications – are little icons you download onto your iPhone to link you to programs that do ANYTHING you want!  There are thousands and thousands of APPS available for whatever you need.  I have 46 apps on my iPhone – most were free – I look for free ones!  Some cost me 99 cents and the most I’ve ever paid for one was $1.99.  I have a couple games, but mostly ones that are for referencing or searching for info – like the one that links me to “All Recipes” with the coolest search feature to find just the right recipe for any situation……and “Fandango” or “Flixster” to look up movies, view trailers, get reviews, show times, and other movie related info……..”TV Guide”, “AccuWeather”, a dictionary, “People” which lets me look up phone #s and addresses, a thesaurus, one that lets me search for the perfect quote for any situation, and even one that gives me the daily and archived “Bizarro” cartoons – I love Bizarro!!!  I also have several that give me internet search options – Yahoo, Wikipedia, YouTube, E! Online, and more.  I typically fly SouthWest, so I have an app to check my flight status and even lets me book a flight!  I can connect to AOL, Facebook, WordPress, and LinkedIn!  I can get maps and stock updates and nutrition info…..the world is at my fingertips!!  I haven’t found one that will slice my bread for my, though……yet…..I’m still looking!!!

But, what I have is just a drop in the bucket……..there is an APP for everything and every interest — there is even an APP called “iFart” – no, it won’t keep track of your farts – it is designed to give the user a wide variety of different fart sounds to play for the entertainment of their friends!  Not my cup of tea, but it is actually a very popular APP – go figure!

I love my iPhone…….I’m looking for more APPS I might enjoy — what are your favorite APPS and what would you recommend for me?

Bread Discovery

I stopped in at Food Lion last night for a few groceries and made an amazing discovery – a new kind of bread!  I had a craving all day for a good hamburger made with onion soup mix, so I got a small package of hamburger and a bunch of other stuff I was out of.  When I got to the bread aisle, I looked for some hamburger buns and something caught my eye.  I’m not sure why I even gave it a second look cause I was specifically looking for hamburger buns……but, it looked cool, so I picked it up for a closer look.  The package was Pepperidge Farm Deli Flats – 100 calorie thin rolls – soft 100% whole wheat!  They kinda look like pita bread, so I thought they would be hard and dry – but, I poked at them and they felt soft!!!  I’m always looking for bread that won’t add on a lot of carbs, so I thought they might be worth a try.  I almost bought a package of hamburger buns, too……just in case……but, decided that would be a waste of money, so just got the package of deli flats.

I got home and put my groceries away, fed the girls, and made my hamburger – mixed in an envelope of onion soup mix and a little Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder!  It was delicious!!!  But, the best part by far was this new bread!!!  It was surprisingly good!!!  It had a really nice whole grain flavor that was very evident – even over the highly seasoned hamburger, the miracle whip, the ketchup, and the sugar-free sandwich pickles!  I was shocked that I could taste the bread at all!

And it only had 19 total grams of carbs!!!  And only 100 calories!!!  And BIG flavor!!!  And soft!!!  It comes in three varieties, too — Soft 100% Whole Wheat, 7-Grain, and Whole Grain White.

I have a new favorite sandwich bread!!!  Woo Hoo!!!  Try them out — I bet you like them, too!

Movie Review – The Bounty Hunter

I’ve been waiting a long time for this movie to come out!  Gerard Butler – love him…..Jennifer Aniston – so funny…..previews looked hysterical…..the story sounded like it just had to be funny to watch (ex-husband bounty hunter has to bring in ex-wife because she skipped bail)!  It finally opened this weekend and I, of course, ran out to see it on Saturday.  I actually had two I was trying to choose between – “The Bounty Hunter” and “The Ghost Writer”.  “The Bounty Hunter” won out because it was playing here in Sanford and I really wanted to just laugh for a while!  “The Ghost Writer” would have meant a drive in to Cary and it wasn’t likely to give me a good laugh.

All I have to say about “The Bounty Hunter” is that it was a treat to watch Gerard Butler – he lived up to my expectations!  Jennifer Aniston was funny and did a good job on her character, too.  But, the rest was kind of a dud…..the previews showed us all the funny scenes – there was no need to spend the money on a ticket, cause I saw it all for free!  Don’t get me wrong – it was cute and I did laugh – just not as much as I thought I would.  Yeah, it was cute, but it wasn’t anything all that special.  It is a good one for NetFlix……save your money on a big screen ticket and wait till it comes out on DVD or cable.  If it comes down to a choice between this one and another one – take a chance on the other one!  I wish I had!

I rate it a C+…..just average – not good, not bad – might be fun for a boring night at home!

Dream Visitor

I had a visitor in my dreams last night – one that I was so happy to see and was extremely sad and upset when I was jolted awake and it all ended!  I believe that those we have loved and lost “visit” us in our dreams when we need them most.  When we are dreaming, we are most open to their spirits and they can interact with us in ways they can no longer do during our waking hours.

Last night, my Poppie visited me.  Charlie Culmo was my hero and the only true father I ever knew!  He was my “Dad”.  He passed away on this date – March 20th – in 1999.  Click here to read a memorial post I wrote two years ago with some of my most cherished memories of him.

Our visit was perfect timing – he must have known that it would dawn on me this morning that it is the 11th anniversary of his death and that I would be so sad and in desperate need of a hug from him!

In my dream, I woke up and went into the living room, where I found him standing in my kitchen.  I smiled and walked towards him saying how glad I was to see him.  He stretched his arms out and I ran into them.  He hugged me tight and I cried on his shoulder.  Then, the music started playing and we danced – like we did so many, many times when he was alive!  The first song was “our song” – Barbara Fairchild’s “Teddy Bear Song”.  Then, Elvis’ “If I Could Dream” and “You Gave Me A Mountain” played.  We danced non-stop as the songs played and we never let go – even between song changes!  When the music stopped, he pulled back and we talked for a few minutes about my house and how much he liked what I have done with it.  Then some guy burst through the garage door and started to grab me.  In true “hero” form, Charlie grabbed the guy, punched him in the face, threw him out the door, and slammed it shut!  I stood there stunned and he hugged me, again, and kissed me on the forehead.  He told me that he will always be watching and keeping me safe.  And the music started back up and we danced some more!

And then, the girls wanted to go out and started their ritual of breathing in my face and wiggling beside me to shake the bed…….and I woke up…….and Charlie was gone……and I started to cry!!!!

But, for what seemed like the entire night, I had him in my kitchen and we danced and hugged and it was so comforting!!!  And if I hold my breath and close my eyes, I can still feel his warm hugs and sway to the music in my head!  It was a good visit — I hope he visits again soon……

Signs of Spring

Signs of Spring are popping up all over – literally!  Daffodils can be seen all over town.  The early flowering trees are budding out — a nice stretch of warmer weather will surely pop them out in what seems to be over night.  The forecast has the temperatures creeping into the mid-high 70s.  And this Saturday looks like it will be the perfect “top down” day.  Then…..with all the typical unpredictability that Spring brings…..Sunday is supposed to drop back down into the 60s and bring some thunderstorms!!!

Aahh, Spring — bring it on!!!

Random Memories

Just some random memories that have popped into my head recently.  Over the past couple of weeks, various things have triggered memories that brought a smile to my face or made me laugh out loud for what appears to be no reason to those who observed it.  I thought I might share them…..

  • Pet Related:
    • When we first brought Puddles home, she was not house trained.  It seemed like whenever I took her outside to do her duty, she would just stand there looking at me like she had no idea what in the world to do and then she’d come in and do it on the floor!  I noticed, though, that if she got active out there and ran around a little, it would “get things moving”, so to speak, and she would do everything that needed to be done!  SO — I turned it into a game and whenever I took her out, I would run and dance around the yard with her singing a few specially selected songs to set the mood for her:  BTO’s “Taking Care of Business” (no lyrics changes needed), Eddie Murphy’s “Party All The Time” (changed lyrics to “My baby wants to POTTY all the time…”), and Leslie Gore’s “It’s My Party” (changed lyrics to “It’s my potty and I’ll pee-pee if I want to, poo-poo if I want to…”).  At the time, we owned a big brick house on the last block of N. Steele Street and the neighbors or people driving by must have thought I was nuts!
    • I had a toy apricot poodle, Buffy, when I first started dating my future husband.  When Buffy passed away from cancer, I was devastated.  My then-boyfriend decided to surprise me with a gift – an adorable little beagle puppy we named Easy.  Poor Easy jumped off the porch one day and broke his hind leg!  His cast was bigger than he was, but he hobbled around on that thing and made us laugh for weeks!  The problem was, Easy was growing, so we had to take him in for a new cast 2-3 times before the leg healed!
    • When Easy got older and we moved to Sanford, he was a good hunter and stubborn as all get out!  We lived in town on Steele Street, at the time, and he would take off after a scent and we wouldn’t see him for hours or days.  So, we got one of those electronic invisible fences.  The first couple of times he tried to leave the property, he would get zapped and come back to the house.  We were so pleased that he learned so fast and that it looked like it was going to work…….but not for long!  It didn’t take him long at all to figure out that the zap only lasted a few seconds and it really wasn’t that bad!  If he was determined to leave, it was worth the pain — he would get a few feet from where the signal would get him and just stand there thinking, then he would take off like a shot, yelp and yell as he went through the signal area and keep right on going!  Then, he would do the same when he returned — you could just see his thought process as he prepared himself for the jolt and bam, he was gone!
  • Mom, My Brother, and Me
    • One evening, my brother, Mom, and I were eating at the kitchen bar and joking around and acting silly.  My brother decided to be smart and act like he was going to hit the bottom of the ketchup bottle to pretend to make it spray out at our Mom.  To all of our surprise, the cap must not have been on tight cause as soon as he hit the bottom of the bottle, the cap went flying and ketchup gushed out of the bottle all over Mom and the bar!!!  (OMG – I just set off a laughing jag just writing about this one!!!)
    • My brother used to love to torment me, but I was determined to not be his victim!  One afternoon, I was sitting in the living room watching a movie and eating a plate of spaghetti.  He came in and changed the channel on me!  I yelled at him and changed it back, but he just changed it again!  This was before there were remote controls, so it meant getting up and going over to the TV to do all this.  This went on for a while with some pushing and shoving and fighting over what channel it would stay on.  Finally, I had sat back down with my spaghetti and was watching the movie and he came in and changed it AGAIN!  That was the last straw — I took that plate of spaghetti and threw it at him!  Luckily, he ducked and it didn’t hit him, because I threw it so hard that it shattered against the wall it hit – this plate was made of a thick molded plastic called Melmac, which was guaranteed to be unbreakable!!  If it had hit him, he would have been seriously hurt (even though, at the time, that was the goal).  There was spaghetti all over the wall and floor!  What a mess!
    • Mom (or my brother – don’t remember which, for sure) was taking a large glass jar of Miracle Whip from the fridge to the counter and it slipped out of their hands — the jar hit the floor with such force that the lid flew off and Miracle Whip exploded up out of the jar all the way up to the ceiling and everything in between!  Another hysterical mess!
    • When my brother and I were little, my Mom worked multiple jobs.  One particular morning, we were playing in the living room, which was right outside her bedroom, trying to be quiet because she had worked a full shift and then tended bar until the wee hours of the morning, so she was pretty exhausted.  We heard her say something, but didn’t make it out, so we went to her door and asked her what she said.  She repeated it, but it was obvious that she was talking in her sleep.  We giggled and laughed about it.  The words she said were “Don’t drink it, eat your Christmas tree!”  The funny thing was, we were playing with a shot glass set that was an opened gift under the Christmas tree and eating Christmas cookies shaped like Christmas trees!  We have never let her live that down and it never fails to bring uproarious laughter to all of us when anyone just randomly says “Don’t drink it, eat your Christmas tree!”
    • Mom, my brother, and I were driving down the street one day and my brother was telling Mom about some kid who gave him the finger at school.  He wanted to be sure she knew what he meant, so he reached up from the back seat and put his hand in front of her face while she was driving with his middle finger sticking up!  Mom pushed it away and lectured him about how people driving by would think he was doing that to her and that he shouldn’t be distracting her like that when she’s driving.  My brother and I got a chuckle out of it — Mom didn’t share our humor!  But it is still funny thinking about it — especially when I saw some kid waving his hands in front of his mother’s face from the back seat when she was driving behind me on Horner Blvd the other day!
  • Other family:
    • My son, Robby, was such a cutie when he was little!  We went shopping one day and spent $100 on a bunch of miscellaneous stuff — well, he thought that was so cool – he told everyone that would listen that we spend “a whole $100 in just one day!!!”  Another time, we were out shopping and he wanted some toy – I told him I didn’t have the money for it, so he couldn’t get it.  He pouted and said, “well, why don’t you just write a check?”  He didn’t accept the explanation that you must have money in the account before you can write a check!
    • My nephew, Bryan, was 3 years-old when I got married.  My brother, his wife, and Bryan all came up to the wedding from SC.  Bryan was so cute in his best little outfit!  As I walked down the aisle with my Poppie, Bryan yelled out “Hey, there’s Aunt Kim.”  I waved at him as I walked by.  But, that wasn’t enough for him.  He kept calling out to me – “Aunt Kim, hey, Aunt Kim….” – until his Dad took him outside to quiet him down.  What my brother didn’t think about was that we were in a historical old church that didn’t have air conditioning, so we had the windows all open.  I snickered as we all listened to my brother and Bryan having a “come to Jesus” session right outside one of the open windows!  This story is one of my favorite and most endearing memories of my wedding and I enjoy telling Bryan – who just had a baby boy of his own in January – all about it!!!
  • I used to ride mini-bikes, dirt bikes, and eventually, motorcycles.  I took a few spills and had a few incidents on them doing stupid things…….
    • Once, I was riding a mini-bike at a Family Picnic where my Mom (and later I) worked.  The throttle stuck on full speed and I couldn’t get it to slow down or stop!  Luckily, I was good at riding them in fields and rough ground – I was able to jump and avoid an accident on several ditches while I tried to get it to ease off the throttle — until one ditch that I misjudged and came down nose first into it and went head over tea kettle hanging on all the way!  I only know the details from what I was told from witnesses cause I had no memory of it happening – I remembered getting on the bike and then being walked to the car to leave and asking what happened!
    • Another time, I was showing off with a new motorcycle in my back yard.  The grass was wet and I started to slide into the pool – instead of just easing off and riding it out to avoid running into the pool, I chose to clamp down on the hand breaks – the bike stopped abruptly, but I didn’t – I flew over the handle bars onto the grass in front of the bike – just barely missing slamming into the side of the pool!
    • I was taking a friend’s low rider out for a spin – it was low slung, so I didn’t have any trouble putting both feet flat on the ground, but it was a very heavy bike — I was stopped at a light and shifted on the seat just a little to get comfortable and the bike started to lean over – my foot wasn’t square on the ground cause I was shifting my weight, so I couldn’t stabilize the bike and it started to go down – it was too heavy for me to recover – I was able to lay it down gently and not cause any damage to the bike, but had to get two guys in the car behind me to help me pick it back up and did a wicked job of twisting my ankle and knee — and ate a good dose of humiliation over it!
    • I took my own motorcycle out for a ride and a couple miles or so from the house, it stalled out.  I thought it was out of gas, but checked and the tank was full.  I checked a few other things and everything seemed fine, but it wouldn’t start back up.  So, I pushed it all the way back home.  When I got there, my Poppie checked it out to see what was wrong with it and discovered that I had the gas valve on “reserve”, so once the small amount in the reserve tank was gone, it quit!  If I had just turned it “on”, I would have been fine and wouldn’t have needed the major workout I got pushing a dead bike all that way!
    • But, the best memories of my motorcycles was driving home on warm summer nights after working second shift – flying down Ridge Road after midnight with little or no traffic – sailing along, weaving in and out of the broken center line of the road or leaning back with my arms up over my head seeing how long it took for the forks to veer off one way or the other……absolute freedom!!!!

Enough memory lane for one night…….

Temple Theatre Review – Jason Petty’s El Paso

Attention all you country music lovers and anyone who loves music, in general:  Get your tickets to see Jason Petty’s El Paso at the Temple Theatre before it ends its run and you lose out on your chance to see an incredible show!  There are ony two weekends left, so time is running out!

This show was written, created, and performed by Jason Petty.  Petty was in Sanford for another show in 2007 – Hank and His Honky Tonk Heroes (click here for my review of that show).  After I saw that show, I was absolutely convinced that there was nothing that could even come close to topping it!  But, after today’s matinée performance at the Temple Theatre, I stand corrected!  I won’t go so far as to say El Paso topped Honky Tonk Heroes – afterall, the 2007 show was about Hank Williams and Hank will never be topped!  But, El Paso was truly amazing on its own and has no trouble standing side by side with Petty’s Hank Williams.

For this show, Petty takes on the great Marty Robbins.  He brings life to Robbins classics like “A White Sport Coat (and a Pink Carnation)”, “El Paso”, “El Paso City”, “Devil Woman”, “My Woman, My Woman, My Wife”, and others.  He also puts the timing of Robbins’ career into context with songs from artists from the Singing Cowboys era and early Country and Western music that influenced Robbins as he grew up and developed his style.

I thought I knew a lot about Marty Robbins – I grew up on his music and have always enjoyed him.  But, I learned something new at this show.  Robbins was the writer of one of my top favorite Elvis Presley songs – “You Gave Me A Mountain”.  Robbins wrote the song, but never recorded it as a single.  Then, Elvis took it and made it a hit.  This song means a lot to me – not only is it one of my favorite Elvis songs, but it is also one that my dear friend David Whittier used to sing in his band, Defiance, before he died.  Hearing it today from a different view-point really touched my heart!  Quite a bit of the show brought tears to my eyes, but this song brought a river down my face!  And the river continued on with the final song, “My Woman, My Woman, My Wife”, which Robbins wrote for his wife of 37 years.

Another standout was the first song after the intermission.  Vocalist Carolyn Martin belted out “San Antonio Rose” and it was amazing!  Petty talked about a new show he is developing with Martin that they plan to start touring with in the Fall.  The first half will be Petty doing Hank Williams and the second half will be Martin doing Patsy Cline!  As I listened to “San Antonio Rose”, I imagined Martin doing a full set of Patsy Cline songs and I got chills!  If this show doesn’t come to Sanford, I think I’ll have to find out where I need to travel to see it!

And don’t let me forget to mention the band – complete with a steel guitar and a fiddle!  They do an incredible job, as well.

If you love Country Music or if you just enjoy a variety of music styles, you really should go see this show – it will fill your heart with joy!

Movie Review – Remember Me

I wasn’t sure I wanted to bother with this movie.  The trailers looked good, but they didn’t reach out and grab me.  It all looked a little too “cliché” and I just wasn’t sure I wanted to bother with it.  But it did look like it might be good, so I went ahead and took in a matinée on Saturday afternoon.

The plot was all too familiar – yet another new twist on the whole “Rebel Without a Cause” theme.  Tyler Hawkins (Robert Pattinson) is a troubled young man about to turn 22 – the same age his older brother, Michael, was when he committed suicide on his birthday.  His family is rich, but he lives in a pig pen apartment with an obnoxious room-mate (Tate Ellington) and goes around looking like a homeless bum wearing dirty, wrinkled, ill-fitting clothes.  He holds a lot of anger in his life and takes it out on the world.  His parents (Pierce Brosnan and Lena Olin) are divorced – the family broke apart after Michael’s suicide.   His 11-year-old sister lives with his mother and her husband.  Tyler’s anger with life gets him involved in a street fight and then gets mouthy and pushy with a detective (Chris Cooper) who busts his face up arresting him.  His room-mate dares him to connect with the cop’s daughter, Ally (Emilie De Ravin), and then do something embarrassing to her for revenge on her father.  Tyler starts a relationship with her and, instead of dumping her, they fall in love and he starts to turn his attitude around.   Ally comes with her own baggage – her mother was brutally murdered while waiting for a subway train and an 11-year-old Ally was there with her and witnesses the whole thing.

The movie started out slow and boring – I didn’t have much hope that it would turn the predictable story line into anything special.  But, soon the redeeming qualities started to be noticable.

Brosnan and Cooper were very effective as the two fathers.  Brosnan as the rich, powerful executive who keeps everyone he loves at arm’s length because of the pain of losing his oldest son.  He participates in their lives to the extent that the shields he has constructed will allow, but it isn’t enough for them and they think he doesn’t care about them.  Cooper as the over protective father using his position on the police force to keep from losing the only family he has left to a rebellious thug.

The relationships all come together beautifully.  The actors did a top-notch job of bringing the characters to life and giving them dimension.  There was a simple complexity that drew me in.  I believed the characters and felt deep emotion for them and the story line.

The last few scenes were very good and lead up to an extremely powerful ending.  Even if it didn’t get better earlier, the ending would have been well worth sitting through the entire two hours.  I just sat there holding my breath with tears pouring down my face!  When I left, I sat in my car for a few minutes without turning the key to try to get past the emotions I was feeling.

I’m tempted to take off some points for the slow, predictable start, but it did develop into something very profound and overcame the clichés.  So, I rate this one an A-.  If you decide to go or wait for the DVD, don’t give up on it too soon – it is worth wading through the beginning to get to the treasure.
