Gremlins – The Movie and The Car

I loved the movie, Gremlins!!! I was in an all day meeting yesterday and talk about “our inner gremlins” came up a few times — it made me think about the movie and the cute little Gizmo!!! Then, low and behold, I was flipping channels this morning and came across Gremlins on ABC Family. I was catching it right at the beginning, so I put the remote down and watched it!!! What a treat!!!

Gremlins came out in 1984 and starred Hoyt Axton and others, including a young Phoebe Cates and Corey Feldman — but the real star was GIZMO as the adorable, lovable little Mogwai. Axton’s character obtains Gizmo as a Christmas gift for his son — they are warned of three very important rules: 1. Keep him out of bright light – especially the sunlight; 2. Keep him away from water – don’t ever get him wet; and 3. Never, ever feed him after midnight!

Of course, one by one, the rules are broken and serious consequences ensue!!! As the Gremlins multiply with each new “generation” more cunning and meaner than the prior batch, they wreak havoc on the sleepy little town! It sends a powerful message that rules are there for a reason and they are NOT made to be broken!!! ha-ha-ha

My very favorite scene is when the gang of destructive Gremlins take over a movie theater and watch Snow White — they make a mess of it and throw popcorn and drinks all over the place — but they also sing along and bee bop to the “Hi Ho Hi Ho” movie that the seven dwarfs sing — it was wild!!! The scene ends badly for the Gremlins, but it is still cool watching them enjoy the movie!!! ha-ha

This movie cute and funny — a real gem!!! I highly recommend it, if you haven’t seen it — it’s a good kids movie, but be warned – it might be a little scary for some young ones who get freaked out about monsters – you might want to see it first to decide if you approve it for little ones.

More on Gremlins of a different kind:

In the 1970s, American Motors (AMC) built a line of cars called Gremlin X. For those who don’t know – AMC was the auto company that produced such automobile models as Rambler, Nash, Eagle, Pacer, Gremlin, and Jeep – before they were bought out by Chrysler in the 80s. The Gremlin X was a cute little hatch back. I actually owned TWO Gremlins — both were the GT models (I always go for the sportier models) – one was white with blue stripes and denim blue jean material for the seat upholstery that I bought used not long after I got out of high school – the other was bright orange with white stripes and black leather interior that I bought new off the show room floor a couple years later!!! The joke was that the Gremlin X looked more like a “pregnant roller skate” than a real car! But — they were cute little cars and , like most AMC cars, they were dependable! I really enjoyed my Gremlins — until I traded the orange one in on a brand new Camaro Berlinetta the last year they made the longer, more classic version.

So – that’s all I know about Gremlins…….

Grandma

This is about my Grandma. Grandma passed away on April 3, 1995. Although she’s been gone from this earth for 13 years, she is as close to me as she ever was — right there in my heart and on my shoulder as one of my three Guardian Angels. There is no doubt in my mind whatsoever that she’s here watching over me — she visits me in my dreams and I can hear her whispering advice in the form of thoughts popping in my head that tell me what she would have likely said about the situation. My Mom, brother, and I lived with my Grandparents when we were little, so there was a strong bond there.

Grandma was so beautiful when she was a young woman — her family nickname was Babe. She suffered from nerve-deafness – she was totally deaf in one ear and about 75% or more deaf in the other. She wore a hearing aid and could hear sounds and, for the most part, what people were saying — if they talked loud enough — but, she mostly read their lips.

My grandparents weren’t well off – they were farmers in their younger years and then worked very hard most of their lives for the right to own a lovely home and have a little money saved up for retirement. They had a “summer home” on Lake Ontario, but only because Grandpa built it board by board himself in the mid-late 1950s.

Some of the things I think of when I think of Grandma:

  • Food!!!! A lot of my memories about Grandma center around food of some form or another. We had lots and lots and lots of family gatherings at Grandma’s house – holidays, reunions, special events, etc. Grandma was a great cook and always had a ton of food on the dinner table!
  • On the subject of food — Grandma was famous for her pies, but even more so for her Apple Dumpling!!! She made this fabulous dessert for all big family dinners and upon request for other dinners or special events. Her apple dumpling was baked and then just before it was served, she would make a clear sauce to pour over it hot. She was the only one who could make the sauce — not that she was keeping the way she made it a secret — to the contrary – she gave us all the recipe, showed us how to make it, and described all the little tips about making it!!! But, even following the recipe and her tips to the letter, it has never turned out the same for anyone but her!!!! There must have been something in the way she held the spoon or something………………….whatever the case, the tradition of apple dumpling the way Grandma made it unfortunately died with her!!!!
  • Grandma worked for many years in the lab at the local Hunts factory in our town – mostly testing ketchup. You rarely see glass ketchup bottles anymore, but did you know that you could tell if the seal on a glass ketchup bottle was good or not by holding the bottle in one hand and hitting the top with the palm of your other hand? If the seal was good, it would make a loud “squeaking” sound when you rapped on the lid like that. Just one of the many things she taught me…….
  • She was an incredible seamstress — she made a lot of clothes for herself and all of us. She also did a lot of crochet work and knitting. I have her antique sewing table – it is in my guest room as a bed side table. I also have her sewing machine, but I don’t sew, so it is kind of a waste with me. I have some things she crocheted, as well.
  • She loved her “stories” — I don’t remember which soaps she followed, but I think they were the “CBS” ones. During the summer breaks, we would be home all day with her — she would sit us down for a nice lunch promptly at 12:00 noon, watch the noon news while we ate, and then the “stories” would come on.
  • Grandma attended every one of my “performances” – I was in the Drama Club in school, so she came to all those performances – she came when I was in the Senior Play – and she cried when I was performing a dramatic one-act play for a contest (which I won, by the way) because the character I was playing was a man in solitary confinement and she couldn’t bare the thought of my being in prison!!!
  • Grandma loved to travel – she wasn’t much of a wide spread traveler, but she enjoyed being on the go and could pack a suitcase and be ready to run in a seconds notice!!! Since both Grandma and Grandpa often had seasonal jobs at Hunts or Birdseye, they would drive to Florida to visit relatives in the winter months. She loved getting in the motor home with my Mom and Dad and taking off for visits here in NC to see me and to SC to visit my brother. She also enjoyed traveling with her sister (my great Aunt Betty) to interesting places – they did a New England tour that she particularly enjoyed.
  • Also on a “sorta like traveling” note — she loved going on Sunday drives! Grandma didn’t drive – Grandpa wouldn’t allow it!!! Her compromise for giving in on his insistence that she NOT get a driver’s license was that he had better be there for her when she wanted to go somewhere!!!! So, they would get in the car on most Sundays and just drive around the country side – taking in the scenery and ending up wherever they ended up – stopping for dinner or an ice cream or milkshake somewhere along the way. Many times, that involved my brother and I riding along. They would point out locations of interest and give us a history lesson of the way things were versus how they were at the time of the rides!!!!

Grandma suffered from severe arthritis – her final years were riddled with pain! She also had a series of strokes, TIAs (mini strokes) and congestive heart failure. She had to have a shunt in her head to help drain excess fluid from around her brain and had a tough surgery on her knee. So, she suffered a lot in the last several years of her life. My Mom did the best she could to keep her comfortable and made sure she had whatever she needed or wanted. She is in a better place now – where she can hear the birds chirping and be pain free, young, and beautiful!!!

Grandma lived a hard, but full life and she felt blessed for what she had. I learned so many valuable life lessons from her — she was an incredible woman and I love and miss her so very much!!!

Dancing and 150 years old???

First — I am happy with the results on Dancing With The Stars, so far — the obvious ones have gone home. Not to take away at all from their strong efforts and very good work, but they were the weakest of the group this season. The magician, Penn and the tennis star were the first two to go. Then, last night, Steve Guttenberg went home. I was concerned they were going to send Marrissa home — that wouldn’t have been good!!! She is doing very well and gives it everything she has!!! I doubt she’ll last more than a couple more weeks, but she deserves to stay a little while longer ———- Adam Corrolla needs to go next!!! Priscilla Presley and Marlee Matlin continue to amaze me — both are doing a great job!!! Once Adam is gone, it will start to get really difficult — all the rest are doing really well and it will come down to either some mistake or pure popularity that will determine who leaves over the next several weeks. I don’t have a strong prediction, yet — but I’m convinced the winner will be one of the girls this season!!

Now — Barbara Walters had a special on last night after Dancing — I wanted to watch it, but fell asleep and missed it!!! They think people will start living as long as 150 years???? Do we really WANT to live 150 years???? I wish I hadn’t missed that one — I would have liked to see what they think the world will be like if people start living well into their second century!!!!

Temple Tuesday

WOW — WOW — WOW — WOW — WOW!!!! If you read my earlier post about Peggy, Rosie, and Us at the Temple Theater, you know that I was really excited about it! Well, it did not disappoint me — in fact, I seriously doubt any one of the large crowd that attended were disappointed!! Rachael and Wendy had the entire audience tapping, clapping, and bopping along with their superb renditions of the songs made famous by the late, great Peggy Lee and Rosemary Clooney.

We’ve seen Rachael and Wendy in shows at the Temple before – we know they can sing – man, can they sing! But, last night showcased them in a way that absolutely blew me away! They were fabulous!! There were only a couple songs that I didn’t recognize — the rest were all so familiar and enjoyable! I loved every minute of it……. the only negative comment I have is that it was a limited engagement and only one show — I would have liked to see that one again!!!

Next up at the Temple: Godspell – April 10 thru April 26 – I’ve already got my ticket!!!!

Then, the last show of the season: Ain’t Misbehavin’ – May 29 thru June 22

Inspection Sticker

Yesterday was March 31st. This wasn’t a secret and I wasn’t just getting out of a cave from a long hibernation or anything — so, I was aware of the date and that March was ending — duh! The surprise, though, came when I got in my car yesterday morning to head to work and, for some unknown reason, my inspection sticker caught my eye!!! The month punched out was MARCH and the year punched out was 2008!!! My brain flooded with thoughts of what this meant –OMG — my inspection was going to expire…..and I had to get to work…..and I had a lunch meeting, so couldn’t get out to take care of it at lunch…..and how many places are open late to take care of it after work……and, with all my luck, if I wait until lunch time on April 1st to take care of it, a cop will be sitting on 15/501 just waiting to give me a ticket…..and I didn’t need anything else to contribute to a gloomy, rainy week!

There must be some electronic device built into inspection stickers to send a subliminal message to “look at me – I need attention” if they aren’t changed out by the end of the month!! I never look at that thing – ever!!! But, just about every year I just happen to glance at it on the last day of the month it is due!!! What are the odds??? Once, a couple of years ago, I glanced down at it on the last day of the month it was due and noticed it was about to expire — but, unfortunately, I was on an interstate in PENNSYLVANIA on my way to NEW YORK for a couple weeks!!! Can’t get a NC inspection done in either of those states (or any other state between here and there)!!!! So, the entire trip I was nervous and worried about getting stopped somewhere between NC and NY with no valid state inspection!!! I was lucky and didn’t get stopped and I took care of it the day after I got back home, so all worked out………..but…………I work myself up into a frenzy about things like this!!! I need a system to remind me at the BEGINNING of the month, so I can take care of it before it ends up being the last day of the month and limited options!!!

As for this year’s inspection sticker……everything worked out beautifully!!!! An afternoon meeting got cancelled, so I was able to leave work on time and the absolutely fabulous guys at Kelly’s Mobil Station on Hawkins Ave (just past the Rt. 1 overpass going towards Pittsboro) were open and had time to take care of me!!! They are great — I have my inspection done there every year and when I need other work done, I pop in there — they’ll fix you up and you won’t have to take out a second mortgage on your home to pay for it, either!!!

Kelly’s saved the day — I can get in my car later this morning and drive to work without fear — I’m LEGAL!!!! WHEW!!!! A major issue solved and off my mind……………until next March 31st!!!

Movie Review – 21

I went to see 21 this afternoon at the Spring Lane Cinemas here in Sanford. This is the story of a group of college students at MIT who work together as a team to count cards in Vegas. They are led by one of the professors at MIT, played by Kevin Spacey. The team consists of three guys and two girls – one of which – Ben – joins the team after one of the original members moves on. Ben is a math wiz who has been accepted at Harvard Medical School and the only thing that could possibly stand in his way is not having the $300,000 tuition! He applied for a special scholarship, but was one of 75 or more applicants and only one is granted each year. The advisor for the scholarship pretty much told him that he had an impressive application, but didn’t have anything that made him “stand out”. So – figuring his chances were slim to none, he joins this group to “earn” the money to pay his own tuition. The story chronicles his training and the team’s exploits in Vegas. They start out being very successful, but things start to fall apart and the drama begins —- they get the attention of a Loss Prevention Investigator played by Laurence Fishburne who uses mob-type tactics to ensure they don’t continue counting cards in the casino he is employed to protect.

The movie is good — interesting and exciting in a fun way with just enough danger and drama — I really liked the ending, too! It wasn’t perfect, though — I would have liked to have known more about the characters and what got them together (other than Ben, we really don’t know anything about any of them and not really all that much about Ben). I realize they have to tell an entire story in just 2 hours or less, but this one did need some more background info to help it along. I understand it is based on a true story and a book. I didn’t read the book or hear anything about the real story, but, I’ll venture to guess that those who have might be a little disappointed in the movie.

Will this get added to my video/DVD collection? Probably not!
Was I sorry I spent the money on it?
No – it was definitely worth the $$!
Did I enjoy it?
Yes – all in all, it was a good movie and I would recommend it!

Rating – One thumb up or a B”

Peggy, Rosie, and Us at the Temple Theater

On Tuesday night, The Temple Theater will present a real treat — Rachael Smith and Wendy Hayes will be there for a one-night-only showing of Peggy, Rosie, and Us. It will be a musical tribute to the great Peggy Lee and the incredible Rosemary Clooney! Both women made a huge mark on musical history and contributed to the future successes of women in music. I loved last year’s A Dash of Rosemary, which was a tribute to Rosemary Clooney, and can not wait until Tuesday to see this show.

(Photos – Miss Peggy Lee, Miss Rosemary Clooney, Wendy Hayes / Rachael Smith)

In particular, I am excited that the show includes the great music of Peggy Lee. Peggy Lee was a sultry singer with a jazzy, sexy voice. When I was a little girl, I used to like to play my Mom’s Peggy Lee records and sing along like I was just a elegant and sexy. She was amazing. My favorite Peggy Lee song was “Is That All There is?” with the chorus that goes “Is that all there is? Is that all there is? If that’s all there is, my friend, then let’s keep dancing. Let’s break out the booze and have a ball. If that’s all…….there is!” Her most famous recording was of “Fever” — WOW – what a song – and she was the perfect one to sing it — that voice absolutely made the song!!!

Here is a You Tube clip of Peggy singing “Fever” to a collage of photos of her – very nice!

If you haven’t gotten your tickets for this show, yet — hurry!!! You won’t want to miss it!!! Hope to see you there!!!

Best and Worst Teeth Listing

This list of Cleanest and Dirtiest Teeth in the US (click here for article) was on the AOL Welcome page today…..not sure how they determine what cities have the dirtiest teeth and what cities have the cleanest, but here is the list that was compiled by Men’s Health. (btw – since the list was compiled by Men’s Health, does that mean they only checked out men’s teeth????)

NC came out pretty good — Raleigh ranked # 3 out of 100 and Charlotte ranked #6! On the other hand, if I bought into this, I’m not so sure I’d jump into a kiss from anyone from Lubbock, TX without first asking for their dental records – ha-ha!!!

My Current Favorite Commercial

I love commercials — most of the time, they are better than the shows I’m watching!! ha-ha

Here is my current favorite — it gets my attention every time and if I’m in the other room when I hear it, I drop what I’m doing (within reason – grin) and run in to watch it!

Strange Bed Fellows

I left this story in a comment responding to a post titled “Appetizer” that Jennifer wrote on her blog – “Life With Miles” – a blog devoted to her and Billy’s new puppy, Miles. After I left the comment, I thought I should post the story here – it happened about a year ago, long before I started my blog, but I think it is a priceless story and worth conveying “old news”!

I love reading Jennifer’s blog — it reminds me that I’m not alone in the world of what reading her blog proves are “typical puppy stuff”!!! I almost always have a similar fond memory that comes to mind when I read her stories. The one that rivals the “Appetizer” story goes like this:

One night about this time last year, the girls and I were getting ready for bed. I had just let them out to take care of business and when they came in, we headed to bed. The only light on in the bedroom was the one on the night stand, so it wasn’t very bright in there. I was just about to turn it out and noticed that Megan had just dropped what looked like a clump of dirt (they used to dig a lot and loved to play with dirt clumps, so this didn’t seem odd) on the bed and was attempting to “nose” the blankets up over it to “bury” it in the covers. I said, “eeww – stop that – we don’t want dirt in our bed!” and picked it up to throw it out. As soon as I got it between my fingers and picked it up, I realized it was fuzzy and squishy! I immediately dropped it and turned on the ceiling fan lights — I wish I had just kept it in my hand and tossed it out without ever really knowing what it was — it was a small dead mole!!!! And it was about to be buried in my blankets………..and I was about to crawl into bed with it!!!! uugghh!!!! If I hadn’t noticed it, I could have slept with it!!!! After I finished with the shivers and nausea that the thought of it all gave me, I got a wad of Kleenex and took care of the little carcass!!!

Enough said — luckily, there no uninvited “guests” in my bed that night!!!
