Movie Review – The Time Traveler’s Wife

thetimetravelerswife_smallposterThe Time Traveler’s Wife stars Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana.  Bana portrays Henry, a time traveler who randomly, and without any warning, shifts around through various times during his lifespan.  It starts with a young Henry, I think about age 6, in a car with his mother on what appears to be Christmas Eve.  They are singing and having a great time, when they are suddenly involved in a horrible accident that kills his mother.  Henry is time shifted out of the car just prior to impact – he travels back to two weeks prior and then shifts back where he is standing in the street watching the accident.  An older Henry shifts to the same spot and tells him to not be afraid and he’ll understand it all when he gets older.  I wasn’t crazy about Bana in this role – he seemed……well……”weird”, but then, his character was strange and did suffer from a rare genetic disorder…….

Henry continues to shift in and out of times in his life with no apparent reason for when and why he travels to the times and places he does.  Each time, he leaves his clothes behind, so he arrives at his new destination naked and vulnerable.  He steals the first set of clothes he can find and ends up having to get himself out of a very uncomfortable situation.  This part made no sense to me at all — I had a difficult time figuring out what the point was!  I would have preferred it if there was a purpose for him traveling or if he had to accomplish something when he got there.  In fact, some of the travels lasted no more than a few minutes – he would shift in, get dressed, and shift out!  I understand the book explains all this, so I guess I need to go read it – but, they really should have filled in those gaps in the movie, as much as possible!  There were some time travels that seemed to have a purpose, like when he traveled out of the car accident, when he traveled there to comfort his younger self, and when he traveled to spend time with a young Clare.  He also had brief interactions with various family members and friends – past, present, and future – that help him through his senseless travels.

Enter, Clare — Rachel McAdams!  Clare is first visited by a 40-ish Henry when she is about 6 years old.  He comes back often and they meet and become friends in the meadow near her home.  She leaves clothes in the woods for him to wear when he comes to visit.  She falls madly in love with him (childhood crush and teen age attraction, at first).  They meet later in life when they are both in the same time and get married.  Their life is interesting, to say the least, as they never know when he will leave and how long he will be gone.

The movie is funny and touching — a very good love story and story line.  I only wish they had filled in the blanks about his time travel better – it left me wondering what the point was.  I think I need to get the book because I did find the story to be very endearing!

I deducted a little for all the things they should have included, but didn’t, for the fact that I didn’t really like Bana in this role, and for the lack of good chemistry between Bana and McAdams.  But the story and concept were so good, I ended up rating this one a B+ overall.  I recommend seeing it, but I think you’re probably better off if you read the book first – which is not usually something I recommend, because it tends to leave you disappointed about the differences – but, in this case, might be a good idea…….not sure…….just saying……

101 Dalmatians at the Temple Theatre

DalmatiansPosterThis year’s Youth Conservatory at the Temple Theatre resulted in a wonderful performance of 101 Dalmatians.  I went to see one of the second session performances last night and had a great time and left with a sense of pride in each of the amazing kids that made up the cast.  Sanford has an ample supply of budding young Tony award winners in our midst!

All I can say is that these kids were FANTASTIC!  The costumes that transformed children into dalmatians and other dog breeds were adorable.  The talent of each and every young person on stage was incredible.  And what exactly is it about a kick line that always brings a smile to my face and a tear to my eye – especially when it includes a stage full of kids in dog costumes!  The show was well put together and thoroughly enjoyable.  To think they did all this in just a few short weeks is unbelievable – but true!

Not to lessen the great job done by all, but I do have to say that the stand out performance of the evening was Temple Teens veteran Ravenne Escobar as Cruella DeVil.  Ravenne continues to amaze me every time I see her in a performance at the Temple Theatre or when she appears somewhere with the Temple Teens.  Her voice gives me goose bumps and she is a natural actress that could easily wow audiences on any Broadway stage!  This girl has an incredible amount of talent — I hope she continues on with it and we get to see a lot of her in Temple productions for years to come — at least until NY or Hollywood snatches her up and we get to say “we knew her when” as she accepts many awards on shows like the Oscars and the Tonys….

There is one more production of this delightful show today at 2:00!  Go see it – you’ll really have a great time!

Movie Review – Julie and Julia

julieandjulia_smallposterJulie & Julia was a much anticipated movie for me!  Right from the first clip I saw many months ago as a preview in another movie I was seeing….I was sure this was going to be a winner!  How could it not be?  It had everything:  Meryl Streep, who I love and strongly believe is incapable of a bad performance; Amy Adams, who I think is simply adorable and a delightful actress; Stanley Tucci, who I adore – what a marvelous character actor; Nora Ephron, who’s movies have always ended up on my “loved them” list; blog theme, well, you know I love blogs; food theme, ditto!  It was a sure bet!

All the elements I mentioned above were there and each one did live up to my expectations!  So, why did the movie fall flat for me?  How can a movie with everything going for it not come together as a perfect whole?  Well, I’m not really sure how it happened, but it did!  But, to say it was a total disappointment is not true, either.  So, I’ll break it down….

This is a movie based on TWO life stories and is told as TWO separate stories in TWO separate eras on TWO separate continents……and, in my opinion, they should have made it into TWO separate movies.  They intertwined them and it didn’t work!  The two just didn’t mix.  It might have been different if the two women were to come together at some point – meet and physically connect somehow, but they don’t, other than a brief mention that Julia may or may not have made some comment in an interview that a publisher heard about that implied she didn’t like that Julie was capitalizing on her.

The “Julia” part:  Meryl Streep is incredible (of course) as food icon Julia Child during her time living in post WWII France with her husband, Paul.  Paul is played by the wonderful Stanley Tucci.  Both characters are colorful and enduring.  Streep and Tucci have a fascinating chemistry that worked great in “Devil Wears Prada” and is even stronger as Julia and Paul Child.  They brought the characters to life and did them true justice!  They were the best part of the movie.  I found myself instantly paying closer attention and sitting up straighter whenever the scenes about Julia’s life began.  The telling of Julia’s attempt to find herself that brought her to decide to build on her love of food and attend the famed Cordon Bleu culinary arts school was interesting and funny.  The same can be said about how she got her start as a writer.  The relationships in her life – her husband, her sister, her co-authors in France, and a life long pen pal that she finally meets on a trip to the US to visit a publisher are all genuine and speak volumes to her character.  I would have loved to have had the whole movie devoted just to Julia’s life so they could expand on several aspects they only briefly eluded to.  Like, for instance:  there were at least two scenes where Julia got extremely emotional about seeing a baby or hearing of a dear friend being pregnant.  I got the impression that she couldn’t have children of her own – perhaps a deeper dive into her relationship with her beloved husband might have provided a touching aspect to the story line.  It would have been interesting to also get more information on the impact of the McCarthy Era on Paul Child and their life together – there was a lot of reference to their political views and Paul was called to Washington where he was investigated.  I really think there is a full two hour movie in there and that they missed out on a wonderful opportunity by cutting it so short and mingling it with another story.

The “Julie” part:  Amy Adams portrayed Julie Powell, a budding author who just couldn’t seem to get published.  She decides to just write for herself by starting a blog devoted to cooking her way through Julia Child’s “The Art of French Cooking” cookbook and her experiences along the way.  Sounds like a great blog and like a really cool concept for a movie.  But, for me, it was an annoying distraction to the “Julia” part.  Amy Adams is adorable and brings a lot to her character – that’s not the problem – the problem was the story and the other characters.  There were some really funny scenes – like when she has to touch and kill live lobsters for the first time in her life and scenes where, despite following the recipe and instructions to the letter, the food still did not turn out well at all!  But, for the most part, the scenes felt rushed and incomplete.  The most irritating part for me was watching her, her husband, and her friends eating!  They ate like pigs that were on the verge of starving to death and were given a meal that may be their last one ever!  They rapidly crammed more food in their mouth than could fit in one bite, chewed with their mouths wide open, and laughed and talked with their mouths crammed full while they continued to cram more in!  It was disgusting to watch!!!  Yes, I know, they were trying to convince us that they were in ecstasy over the wonderful food Julie cooked for them — but, you can show how much you love the food without being obnoxious about it!  The scenes in the “Julia” part where Julia and Paul were savoring some wonderful offering of French cuisine told it all in the looks on their faces and the joy in their eyes!  Overall, the “Julie” part had a couple brief moments of viewing pleasure, but it was fragmented and could have been left on the cutting room floor with little impact to the rest of the movie (except that the title wouldn’t have made much sense….).

Again – I would have liked the movie much more if it had dropped the “Julie” part and expanded a lot more on the “Julia” part.  Putting them together just didn’t work – they didn’t meld at all and didn’t even do much to compliment each other.

Rating:

The Julia part:     A

The Julie part:    D+

All together:        C+

Too bad they will probably never go back and take advantage of the missed opportunity to make a full feature film with Meryl Streep as Julia Child and tell the whole story!  Now that is a movie I would really enjoy seeing!

It is a mystery…

OK – I give up – there is no explanation – I have searched and absolutely can NOT figure out how it happened – what in the world could it be?

I got up this morning and went in to the living room and found a small amount of batting (not much, just a few chunks) on the love seat and a chewed up “squeaker”.  I knew it had to have come from one of two toys, but neither one was laying anywhere near the innards.  So, I went searching in the rooms that had open doors – the bathroom was clear – the den had the irritating song toy, but not the bubba toy.  I checked the irritating song toy all over and it was fine and still plays the irritating song!  So, I went into the bedroom – ah ha – there was the bubba toy…..so, I picked it up and looked it over and discovered the amazing mystery that can not be solved!

The toy looked fine, except the small section in the center that was flat – no batting and no squeaker!  The rest of it was perfectly fine – batting all along the rest of it’s long, thin body and……here lies the haunting  mystery…..there are NO holes in it ANYWHERE!!!  The fuzzy fabric is totally intact!  No split in the seams…..no ripped out sides…..no missing head or hat…..NOTHING!!!  Bubba looks perfectly fine – other than being a little grimy from several weeks of being carried around everywhere and used as a pillow or something to hug while Megan slept and, of course, for the small section that no longer has any batting and the missing squeaker!  How in the world did the batting and squeaker get removed?  Did one of the girls take the time to sew up the opening to fix the toy after removing the squeaker?  This is going to bother me for all eternity…….

Pleasant Surprise

Jumping to conclusions isn’t a good thing!  Until you know what you think you know is correct, you should always give the benefit of the doubt.  Because, you never know when you may find out that what you think you know isn’t really right, after all.  Then, you may find out you wasted all that energy being all wrapped up in what you thought you knew!  Follow me?  Well, here’s an example to help bring some clarity to my ramblings…..

I spent a lot of time this week being angry about my internet access through Charter Communications.  Ever since the rain and storms started at the beginning of the week, I have been without high speed access!  Which means I have had to connect through my AOL dial up access — which meant slow access, slow loading, slow downloading, and an extra per hour charge after the first 10 hours!  Uugghh!

I called Charter when it first went out and they said there were problems in the area and they were being worked on.  When it didn’t come back the next day, I called again and they said the problems were fixed and there were no more outages in my area.  I begged to differ and told them that “I” was still out!  The girl I talked to suggested I reset my modem – which I had already done – several times!  So, no help there!

I assumed (yes, I know what assume stands for) that my problem was the continued rain and that once it dried out, I’d be OK.  So, every day – in fact, several times every day – I tried to reset the modem thinking that the darn lines should dry out at some point!   I got it to connect a couple times, but it only lasted a few minutes and was out again!  Luckily, I still had TV service, just no internet!

Every time I logged on with my dial up and tried to open something, I thought to myself – “Man, if those sales people from Windstream would just call me this week, I’ll switch in a heart beat!!!”  (I usually tell them I am happy with my current service and don’t want to switch – which is usually the truth!)

I finally decided to try to call Charter again yesterday.  The automated system took me through all the same resetting procedures I had done myself many times over the past week – I was getting very irritated!!  I finally got through to a real person, who did some checking and said that it looked like I wasn’t getting a signal — well, DUH!!!  He scheduled me for a service person to come out to see what was wrong.  I expected him to tell me it would be a week from next Thursday – I was ready to go off on him!  But – I was happy when he said the technician would be here in the morning – Sunday – between 8:00-12:00!  OK – we have some help on the way!  AND he said he would issue me a credit for the week I didn’t have service – now we’re talking!

So – I got up bright an early this morning to be sure I was up and dressed before 8:00 – just in case by some freak chance, the cable guy showed up in the first part of the time range!  (yeah, right, like that was really gonna happen, huh?)

What a wonderful surprise it was to be sitting at the kitchen table and see the Charter truck pull in promptly at 8:00!!!  Woo Hoo!!!  The technician was a very nice young man who I found out through our conversations was from Long Island, NY and just moved here in April  (we had a nice conversation while he was here — he’s a Yankee fan, so we had some things in common!  LOL).

He got on my computer and did a diagnostic that told him that it wasn’t a water problem – more likely a connection problem.  So he asked me some questions, checked all my connections, and found that the splitter that splits the cable in the den between the computer and the TV was blown!  Apparently, the lightening was so bad during that first storm that it ran a power surge through the cable line.  The outside splitter is grounded, so it didn’t damage that one, but it got to the splitter in the den and there was nowhere to divert it, so it fried the half of the splitter that went to the computer (hence, the TV was still OK) — amazing what electricity flows will do!  Thank goodness it stopped at the splitter and didn’t fry my computer — my Dad’s got fried from lightening once – not a pretty picture!!!

So – he fixed that and got me all up and running.  He then went in to the cable box to be sure all was OK with the TV (even though I thought the picture was fine, he wanted to be sure) and noticed I had an HD TV, but not an HD cable box!  He asked if I wanted to upgrade for $5.00 more a month — I asked “is it really THAT much different to be worth $5 more a month?”  He said the difference is amazing!  So — he got a new HD cable box from the truck and changed them out — and he was right!!!  Man, what a difference!!!  He also noticed that the TV was set to “full screen” and that it was cutting off the top and bottom edges of the picture, so he changed my TV settings to “wide screen” so that the picture fits the screen better!

So – all is great now!  I have my high speed connection back, I have a MUCH improved picture on my TV, and I even got my TV adjusted – something that had nothing to do with the cable service, but he was nice enough to take all of 2 seconds to make it better for me!

Moral of the story — don’t assume — don’t waste time and energy telling yourself potentially incorrect stories — and don’t always start out thinking the worst of the cable company and their technicians!!!  I wish I knew the technician’s name (all I have is a signature that I can’t make out on my receipt) cause he deserves major kudos for customer service and his friendly attitude!!!!

Happy Ending………note to Windstream — you’re still not gonna get me to switch after all.

Movie Review – The Ugly Truth

theuglytruth_smallposterI took in the 5:10 showing of The Ugly Truth this weekend.  This is a romantic comedy starring Katherine Heigl (Gray’s Anatomy) and Gerard Butler (PS I Love You, 2007).

Heigl portrays Abby Ritcher, a neurotic control freak who is looking for the perfect mate by matching prospective suitors to a checklist of desired qualities.  She is also the producer of a local morning show that is struggling with ratings.  To raise ratings, her bosses bring on Butler’s character, Mike Chadway, and his “The Ugly Truth” segment to spice up the show.  Chadway’s local cable show focuses on telling the ugly truth about the relationships between men and women – he is crude and obnoxious, but has a huge fan following.  Of course, he immediately rubs Abby the wrong way and a series of hysterical interchanges ensue – Abby is bound and determined to prove to him that his outlook is totally wrong and he sticks to his guns by pointing out why her approach is exactly why she is still single with a cat for a room mate!

Enter Abby’s new neighbor — an absolutely drop dead gorgeous doctor played by former model Eric Winter who she soon finds out meets 9 out of 10 points on her check list!  Abby is well on her way to ruining her chances with the Doc with her enthusiasm.  Mike notices and when she tries to show him that the perfect man DOES exist, he talks her into taking his dating advice.  She does and it WORKS!

The interactions and relationships between the three and the morning show back drop make for a very funny movie!  There are at least two scenes that are so funny they can be described as “laughed out loud, tears ran down my cheeks, all I could do to keep from peeing my pants” hysterical!!!  There were other laugh out loud scenes, as well — but those two are worth the price of admission alone!  Abby and Mike also discover they both have another side that shows them they have more in common than meets the eye, which creates a major conflict in their goals to prove each other wrong!

Overall, the movie was very funny and enjoyable.  The part I thought didn’t fit was that they had Abby stooping to Mike’s level in a way that just didn’t make a lot of sense.  She also over-did the “desperate love sick” female bit.  BUT – both those downfalls made for good comedy – so I was torn as to whether or not to take points off for them.

I recommend this movie if you want to laugh and if you just want to be entertained.  HOWEVER – if you take offense in blatant sexual innuendo and sexual comedy, this movie may not be for you and I would recommend some caution if you plan to take young children with you.  I give this one a solid B and recommend it for a fun date movie!

Now – on a side note – I usually go to the matinee shows because it really irritates me to pay full price for a movie!  Yesterday I planned to go to the 12:45 show, but got tied up with some things and didn’t make it.  So, I went home and did some things waiting for the 3:10 show, but relaxed and ended up falling into a little nap and missed that one, too!  I went to the 5:10 show, which is the first of the full price time slots of the evening.  I was shocked and very disappointed to find that Spring Lane Cinemas has raised their prices to $9.00 a ticket!  That is just way too much!  The matinee price also went up to $6.75.  Actually, all their prices were increased 25 cents.  25 cents doesn’t sound like much, but if you take a family of 4, that is a dollar more than it cost you before — which was already pretty high!  So — I give Spring Lane Cinemas a big THUMBS DOWN for raising prices in this economy for families that are already struggling to find affordable entertainment choices!

My most bazaar road experience EVER!

I was in Andover, Massachusetts (just outside Boston) this week for meetings.  While I was there, I had the most bazaar road experience ever!   It was very confusing and odd and funny all at the same time!!!  I still can’t get over it!

Amy – the co-worker I was traveling with – was driving and I was the navigator (no comments from those of you who know I get lost everywhere I go – I was a GOOD navigator!).  We were sailing along route 93N from Logan airport to the hotel in Andover when I started to notice something strange.  I didn’t think much of it at first, but when I realize that it wasn’t just some inconsiderate driver, I started to pay more attention to it.  Just about that time, Amy (who has been there before) said, “Oh, I should probably mention that it is legal to drive on the hard shoulder, here!”  That started a conversation about it that continued off and on the whole time we were there!

Apparently, there are certain times of the day when the hard shoulder is used as another fast lane!  Imagine my surprise and confusion when we had cars passing us on the right – literally flying past us in a lane usually reserved for breakdowns!  Cars would be speeding down this lane and look like they were going to be taking an exit and end up zipping right past the exit and keep right on going along the hard shoulder!!  Cars in what is usually the last lane to the right that want to move over to take an exit have to be very careful to look for traffic coming up behind them and literally fight to get over and exit the highway!

And to make it even MORE confusing (if that was possible), some of the signs said it was OK to do this from 6:00 am – 10:00 am and some of them said it was OK to do it from 10:00 am – 7:00 pm!!!!  OMG — what a nightmare!!!!  ha-ha-ha

We talked about it at dinner with the whole group that night and we asked our colleagues who live there whether or not this causes more accidents and what do they do if they break down – there is nowhere to go to get out of the line of traffic!!!  They said that it does cause accidents and one said that she had a flat tire and when she called her husband to come help her, he said “get out of the car and stand as far away from it as you can get!”  Now, I have called my ex-husband when I’ve broke down on a highway somewhere and his advice is always to “stay in the car and keep your doors locked”!!  ha-ha-ha

A colleague from Havant in the UK was riding back and forth from the hotel and the meetings and commented “oh, my!  I could never drive here!” and she wasn’t talking about how we drive on a different side of the road than they do – she was also totally confused by the use of the hard shoulder lane!

Can you imagine????

Saturday Morning

The weekend is here!  Lots to talk about – CIS Dancing with the Lee County Stars event; CARA events; some updates on my ongoing home renovations; and more!  Who said that summer days are “lazy”?  I am definitely in high gear and busy, busy, busy!

Carolina Animal Rescue and Adoption (CARA) is teaming up with Temple Theatre and featured artists Lisa Mathis and Yvonne Sovereign to host a “Dog Dayz of Summer” event on Friday, August 7th from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at the Art Studio at 102 South Steele Street, Suite 302 – on the corner of Steele and Carthage Streets.  $25 will get you into this event and all proceeds go to CARA, a Sanford area non-profit organization devoted to helping animals in need of forever homes.  Tickets can be purchased at Temple Theatre and include an art exhibition, reception with appetizers, and a seat for the Friday evening performance of 101 Dalmatians at Temple Theater at 7:00 pm on the 7th.  Come out and support this wonderful organization and give a helping hand to animals in need of our love and support!  Check out CARA’s and Temple’s web sites for more info on both organizations and the 101 Dalmatians production.

I am so excited….I am planning for a visit this fall by my Mom and this year, my brother and sister-in-law are going to come down and join us for one of the long weekends that she will be here!!!  I can’t wait!!!  This is the first time my brother and his wife have been to my current home.

Other fantastic family news:  My nephew, Bryan – my brother’s son – and his wife, Brianne, are expecting a baby!!!  Too early to know if I’ll be a Great Aunt or a Great Uncle (my feeble attempt at humor – I mean too early to know if it will be a boy or girl), but we’re all anxiously awaiting the newest addition to our family — the first of that generation!!!

Now — renovation update:  The kitchen and living room still have some minor work to be done – rearranging things and putting stuff back up on walls before they are really presentable – but we did get the wainscoting and chair rail molding up on the kitchen walls!  It looks GREAT!!!
