Wine Tasting Fun

The Albion Rotary Club had our first Wine Tasting Event / Fundraiser last night! What a great night! The atmosphere was perfect at Tillman’s Village Inn, there were four local wineries participating, beautiful music by a father/daughter team, delicious food by the Village Inn, door prizes, raffles, and lots and lots of friends sharing wonderful conversations during a relaxing evening out! What could be better than that?

Here are just a few photos I took to show what a lovely setting it was for the event…..

The room was set up with the food table beautifully decorated in the center, the four wineries located around the perimeter (Leonard Oakes table can be seen in the background), and tables for guests to sit and relax throughout the room.

I’ve tried the “Santa’s Secret” before and really liked it! This time, I tried the “Lighthouse White” and “Riesling – Semi Sweet” – both very good!

Here are the wines that Leonard Oakes, located in Medina, NY, brought for us to try – check out their website

A personal favorite from Leonard Oakes is “2013 Blanc d’Orleans”, but they didn’t bring any! 😦

I’ve had the “Frontenac” before and really enjoyed it, so I tried the “Escape Rose” this time – another hit!

I find that most local wineries have such creative and attractive labels, but for some reason, I was really struck by Five Sons’ labels – so pretty!

I first tried one of the whites – not sure which one – and it was very good, but then…..I tried the “Patriot Blend” and fell in love!!!

Tillman’s Village Inn did a wonderful job with the food and making the room cozy and inviting!

The coffee was a hit, too!

This was my personal favorite for the night! I am a new fan, for sure! It is a blend of three native American grapes – a red grape, a white grape, and a blue grape, hence the name – Patriot Blend! While I have several wines that I love from various local wineries and very much enjoyed each of the ones I tasted at the event, this one took the prize, for me, last night!

We are so very blessed to have so many wonderful local wineries so close to us – four right here in Orleans County and several within a short drive across the county line! Not long ago, the Niagara Wine Trail was extended to include the Orleans County wineries – WOO HOO – a great boost for our local treasures! I enjoy advocating for our local wineries because they are so good and take great pride in their products! I was happy to be a part of this event and hope it brought awareness to the wonderful things that the Albion Rotary Club does for our community and helped highlight these amazing wineries that we have right here in our own back yard!!! Visit them ALL…..you won’t regret it and I’m sure you’ll find something to fall in love with – no matter what your taste in wines is, you are sure to find a nice variety to enjoy and keep you visiting them all…..

Until next year’s event……salute!

2016 Daily Photo – Jan 28-31

Well, January will be done in just a few hours. So, let’s round out the month with the last three January Daily Photos! I stuck with it and didn’t miss a single daily photo in the first month of 2016…..only eleven months to go! 🙂

THURSDAY, JANUARY 28:

“Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow”

OK, so it is technically florescent green, but I couldn’t resist using the old bit of wise advise as the title for this photo! I had spray painted an old trash can the day before the photo was taken and was so fascinated with the pattern of the paint on the snow that I just had to make it my photo of the day!

FRIDAY, JANUARY 29:

I was bored while waiting for Mom to have a test done…..so, what else would I do but snap a photo!!!???

Nothing better than a comfortable couch, a cozy blanket, and a good book, which usually all lead to a nice nap!!!

So, tomorrow we’re on to February! I have really doing a daily photo – they were all either something that caught my eye, my favorite photo out of many taken on any given day, or an idea I had for a staged photo! So far, I haven’t had trouble coming up with something with very little or no thought! But — a friend shared this list that she uses for her Daily Photo Challenge! I thought I might keep it handy in case I run into a day that I just can’t come up with something or if the prompt for a given day sounds intriguing to me! Watch and see how many of my February photos end up being inspired by this list!

“Snow Caps on Lake Ontario”

Taken this afternoon at Point Breeze!

Seagulls and Ducks at Point Breeze – 01-25-16

So, I was out and about today….getting groceries, popped in to see Mom….you, know! And, on a whim, I decided to take a quick trip to Point Breeze to see how the river and the lake are doing with the weather and see if there were any ducks, birds, whatever available for a photo op! I wasn’t disappointed! It was gorgeous! And, yes, there were birds and ducks galore!!! I wasn’t the only person checking out the beauty – a couple were walking the break wall and two or three cars came by and viewed the river from their cars.

Both the lake and the river are partially frozen and there are snow caps on the lake! This all made for a refreshingly cold swim and play time for the seagulls and ducks and some areas where they could literally walk on water! I also got to see the long-tail ducks, known as oldsquaw that I read about on the Hub last week (click here for that article) – what a treat! They were particularly fun to watch as they swam gracefully for a ways and then in a group effort, they would suddenly splash and scoot along in a running dance across the water! I’m really glad I decided to make the side trip!

Here are some of the photos I took:

Blue Jays Feeding – 01-25-16

One of my favorite things to do is watch the birds enjoying the bird buffet I have put out for them in my front yard- especially the blue jays and cardinals – such beautiful birds! I have been a little disappointed that they seem to have forgotten about the buffet since the weather has turned cold….just when I would think they’d appreciate it the most! But, mostly, it has just been squirrels and a few crows emptying the feeders…..until the last couple of days! And, today, many little bitty birds and several of the blue jays were back in full force and I even caught a glimpse of a cardinal! So…..I took advantage of the opportunity to practice with the “Sports Mode” setting on my camera and get some action shots of them through my den window! Here are a few of my favorites:

“Treasured Gift”

I had lunch with an dear old friend who was in town for a few days. She surprised me with this wonderful gift – a handmade pillow depicting “Downton Abbey” because of our shared love for the show and a copy of a book by one of my favorite authors!!! She obviously knows me so well! I am picturing myself hugging and crying over this beautiful pillow while watching each of the episodes in this final season of the show I love and will miss so much when it is done……and thinking that she is most likely doing the same many miles away!!! And, it will bring happiness to my heart!

Around Town – 01-20-16
