I looked it up – apparently, there are as many theories as there are pennies in circulation! hahaha
The most common theory is that the designer liked this portrait of Lincoln…..no ulterior motive!

Lenten Photo Challenge:

Long Beach (L.A.) was the second port on my recent Coastal California Cruise. I have to say, this was my very favorite port and shore excursion – maybe my favorite part of the entire trip….although, there maybe a couple really close rivals for that absolute # 1 spot! It was the port I was least looking forward to. I spent several days in L.A. a few years ago on a seminar for work. I did all the touristy stuff on my off time, so “been there, done that” – not really interested in doing it, again. So, I looked for a shore excursion that did not include all the Hollywood and L.A. attractions. I noticed one that featured a trip to the Mission at San Juan Capistrano. I had heard of that and the description of the tour sounded interesting, so that is the one I chose. I thought it would be a nice tour, but was not expecting to be totally blown away by it……it was so incredible……something I will never forget!!!

It was another gorgeous, sunny, warm California day!
Early settlers of California built missions all along the coast with the intent to educate Native Americans to the Christian faith. They were situated so that there was no more than a day’s ride by horse between them and bells were installed along the route to show the way and mark the distance.
The Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded on November 1, 1776 and is known as the Jewel of the Missions. The legend of the Mission San Juan Capistrano is that one of the founding missionaries was in town one day and noticed a shopkeeper swatting away the cliff swallows that flocked around his shop. The missionary asked him what he was doing and he told him that he wanted to be rid of the pesky birds that dirty the entrance to his shop and cause him to lose customers. The missionary told the cliff swallows that they would be more than welcome at the Mission and to come there whenever they want. The next day, the missionary found hundreds of cliff swallows making nests around the Mission. From that day forward, cliff swallows migrate from their winter nesting grounds 2000 miles away to come to the Mission – this happens every year on or about March 19th – St. Joseph’s Day. The birds are still celebrated at the Mission.
I didn’t see any cliff swallows while I was there, but the rest of the Mission took my breath away……I could have spent days there just sitting and wandering around and taking in all the beautiful buildings and stunning gardens! Yes – definitely my favorite part of the cruise……and right up there with the top 2 or 3 things over all for the entire trip!!! It was a rare treat, in deed, for someone with a camera slung over her shoulder! 🙂

One of the bells that were installed along the missions route to show the way and mark the distance between each mission.

Cliff Swallow nests – replica of what the founding missionaries described they discovered

There is a cemetery on site with the graves of the founding missionaries and others over the years

This chapel was amazing…..I could barely breathe while I was inside! I sat in one of the pews for a while and just looked around in awe and in tears! It was so beautiful and so emotional!!!

I lit candles at the altar in honor of my Mom and Dad!

Orange poppies – California’s state flower!

Then, as if that was not enough……we went to Laguna Beach for lunch at a wonderful local seafood / Italian restaurant right on the beach!

Our appetizer was an amazing salad with candies walnuts and dried cranberries

We had three choices for the main course – I, of course, ordered the seafood pasta — linguine with mussels, shrimp, scallops, crab, and salmon (which I gave to the guy sitting next to me – the only thing in the dish I didn’t want) with seasoned tomatoes…..OMG!!! I am rarely impressed with group lunches with set or limited menu choices…….this was unbelievable!!!

Dessert was a flan that I was way too stuffed to eat, but did manage to get a couple bits down to try it……dang – it was good!

On the way back to the ship, we drove along the Pacific Coast Highway through all the little beach communities and right along the ocean. It was so beautiful!
It was a very long, full day…..simply fabulous!!! I ate a light dinner and tried to sit out on the deck for a bit, but was so thoroughly exhausted that I finally gave in and went to bed early!
The first port of my Coastal California Cruise was Santa Barbara. I had originally booked a walking tour that included food and wine tastings through an eclectic section of Santa Barbara. But, I heard some other passengers talking about a different tour that sounded better, so I swapped them out. I’m really glad I did! The tour I ended up taking included a drive through the wine country surrounding Santa Barbara, visits to two estate wineries, and time for lunch and shopping in nearby Solvang – a quaint Dutch village. It was a fabulous day! Santa Barbara does not allow cruise ships to dock – their harbor isn’t really suited for big ships. So, we had to tender to shore in smaller boats.

The tour included this commemorative wine glass for us to use for tastings at both wineries and keep!
I LOVE it — it says “Wine Adventures of Santa Barbara” – PERFECT!!!

The first winery we visited was LaFond – I have never really been one to care for red wines, but over the past year or so I have grown to appreciate them…..but, when I tried this Pinot Noir, I LOVED it….I am a new Pinot Noir fan, for sure!!! We tasted a couple whites and a couple reds. I rarely go to a wine tasting and like EVERY wine I taste, but I did here…..in fact, I did at both Santa Barbara wineries, as well as all three wineries we visited while in Napa Valley / Sonoma, too! I was impressed!

We had a nice size group on our tour – this was about 1/2 of us in the tasting room at LaFond.

To be considered an “Estate” winery, they have to farm their grapes, process their wine, and bottle it all on their own property. We passed so many beautiful vineyards – the country side is full of hills covered with grape vines! This is a section of the property at LaFond.

It was windy, that day…..but very sunny and warm!

Oak barrels used to age some types of wines. The LaFond Pinot Noir is oak aged – very good!!!

The second estate winery we visited was Foley Estates. The owner of this winery was one of the co-founders of Fidelity Investments.

Foley Estates also had a wonderful Pinot Noir and other award winning wines. I purchased a couple bottles of the Pinot Noir from this winery – I regret I didn’t get something from LaFond. In fact, I am killing time right now waiting for Fed Ex with the package from Foley Estates – it has to be signed for and can not be left on a porch because of the contents, so I have to stay put till they get here! 🙂

They have a warm, inviting tasting room! Again, we tasted a couple whites and a couple reds and ALL were amazing!!!

And, their property is stunning, as well!

What a gorgeous day it was!!!

I couldn’t resist taking a photo of this lone cow resting up on the top of the ridge across from the winery! 🙂

Then, we moved on to Solvang. This was a lovely little village settled by the Dutch. To ensure they keep their identity as a Dutch village, all businesses must maintain an old world Dutch look. It really makes for a great place to visit!

After all that wine, I was ready for some lunch…..haha! I chose a small diner and picked the sampling of Dutch sandwiches and potato salad. It was all soooooo good……the ones on the right are sliced Dutch meatballs with red cabbage slaw and pickled carrots, then there was one with ham and a garnish of peas, carrots, and red onions, the last one was roast beef with marinated cucumbers and red peppers – all on pumpernickel bread! YUM!!!

I couldn’t leave without trying their specialty – Aebleskiver!!! They are warm, soft donut-type balls with rasberry jam and powdered sugar. They were HUGE! So, I was only able to eat one and a half…..hated to leave the rest, they were so good, but I just couldn’t eat anymore!

Many of the buildings had these decorative birds on the roofs – at first, I thought they were real, until I looked closer!

Yes – that is an actual pay phone……they do still exist!!!

This was the shop of a lady who hand paints garments……not just by painting a design on them, but also hand painting every inch of the garment – she starts with a white garment and ends up with one that is painted with a base color and the design on top…..they were AMAZING…..but VERY expensive!!! I wanted to find a t-shirt or something, but the price and the fact that most of them were custom made for clients, killed that hope!

We got back to the ship just in time to relax a little and change for dinner. The show that evening was the Motown review. Such a wonderful day!
Another gorgeous day in my little corner of paradise!!!

Lenten Photo Challenge:

I love cruises! They are the best way to travel….think about it…..you get to see multiple destinations, eat practically 24/7, have a laundry list of activities to choose from all day and night, and see a wide range of entertainment to suit a variety of interests any time of the day or night you want…..all for one price! Now, granted, if you enjoy alcoholic beverages or dining at one or more of several specialty dining rooms (other than eating in the dining rooms and buffets that are included) and want to join one of several organized shore excursions, you will have to pay additional fees…..but, you don’t have to – that is strictly up to you! If you want to stick to what is included in your base price and just peruse the destinations on your own, you can still leave happy, entertained, well cared for, and well fed!!! Just try planning a week long trip that you will have to travel between 3-4 different destinations that are not within easy driving distance, pay for three meals a day plus snacks, book hotel rooms at each destination (and possibly in between – depending on distance between the destinations), and get tickets to quality live entertainment and activities each day……and then tell me that doing a cruise that covers it all isn’t a bargain….especially is you stumble onto a great deal and a cruise offering great incentives, like on-board spending cash and drink packages!!!
I cruised Coastal California and Mexico the week of March 25 – April 1. This was my sixth cruise – third since I’ve been retired. My first cruise was a two week cruise to Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and Jamaica with my Aunt Betty when I was about 19 or 20. It was cool, but LONG……I didn’t think I’d want to be on a ship like that for a whole two week, again. My second one was a short three day cruise connected to a four day visit to Disney World with my husband and son – the just cruise went to Nassau. I thought that was too short – we were just getting our sea legs and figuring out where things were on the ship and it was over! Definitely not worth it for me! Then, I didn’t take any cruises until one I took my Mom on in 2010. That one was five days and went to Key West and Nassau. It was that cruise that I decided that a 5-7 day cruise was the right length of time for me. Those first three cruises were all on Carnival – nice cruise line, but more geared towards families and young adults. The next three cruises were all seven day trips – first was a New England/Canada cruise on Royal Caribbean that stopped in Portland and Bar Harbor, Maine and New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Canada in 2015 with my traveling buddy. Nice! Then, last year – 2016 – I went on an Alaskan cruise with Holland America – seven days and several Alaskan stops – with another good friend. And, this year did the Coastal California one on Princess, with stops in Santa Barbara, Long Beach, San Diego, and Ensenada, Mexico. Perfect! So, where might I cruise to next? Not sure – I’d love to do a transatlantic cruise or maybe a Mediterranean cruise. I’d also love to do a European river cruise someday.
But…..let’s talk about the one I just took! It was perfect — seven days, four ports, gorgeous weather, and fabulous shore excursions! This post is only going to focus on the cruise part and photos from the ship. This is the first cruise I took by myself. I don’t mind taking off on little trips alone and traveled alone for work quite often, but this is the first big trip like this that I’ve done by myself! It turned out great — I discovered I wasn’t alone, after all – I was cruising with almost 2000 other people! I went on group tours on shore and ate with different people every meal, which allowed me to meet some really interesting and fun folks! the funny thing about a cruise is that everyone likes to talk about how many cruises they’ve been on and what cruise lines they like best and where they’ve been……the most surprising was a lady from Wales that was on her 82nd cruise – all on Princess cruise line…..in fact, when she left this cruise, she was planning to fly to Fort Lauderdale, FL, where she was catching her 83rd Princess cruise that took her back to England with several stops along the European shore! WOW!

Grand Princess

Bon Voyage

We sailed out of San Francisco – before we set sail, I could see Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge from my balcony

And, this is a view of the Bay Bridge from the upper deck

This is a shot of my balcony cabin

And, a selfie as we pass under the Golden Gate Bridge headed out to sea

The upper deck was crowded with happy passengers as we head towards the Golden Gate Bridge

Every night we got a flyer with the list of all the special features, activities, and entertainment available the next day – multiple options every hour of the day!

Like what movie or concert was going to be shown “under the stars” on the Lido Deck

And fun parties and events

And what time the big balloon drop was going to happen on our last night at sea

And the day the Head Chef and Head Maitre ‘d put on a cooking demonstration for us

And then introduced all the chefs and waiters on the ship

Our first sunset from my balcony

And, my first breakfast delivered to my balcony as we pulled in to Santa Barbara!

Santa Barbara – early morning arrival

The first of two formal nights featured a champagne waterfall – the stand was for people who wanted to pour champagne into the glasses to have their photos taken while it cascaded down the tower of glasses……I did it, but the photo was one of the professional ones and I need to scan it in, yet!

One of many ice sculptures at the buffets

Want to go swimming? There are several heated outdoor and indoor pools available

Soaking in some sun on the Lido Deck – pool side – on the day we were in Ensenada – I chose not to go ashore that day!

Maybe gambling is to your taste……there is a huge casino with slots and poker and roulette and more!

And, entertainment galore……some in smaller areas, like the atrium

Some in more intimate areas, like a piano bar (doesn’t he look like Neil Diamond???)

And then there were the big productions with wonderful singers and dancers in one of two large auditoriums – this was called “British Invasion” and highlighted songs from that fabulous time in our music history when all the great British rock groups crossed the pond to bring their music to America!

This was a show featuring Motown hits

This was the big finale show highlighting the history of Broadway shows and choreography

BRAVO!!!
There were also comedians and magicians and jugglers……whatever your entertainment interests are, you’ll find it on board somewhere!

Here are just some examples of the food……this was one of several specialty dining rooms where, for an extra charge, you get a little higher quality meal!

Hey – they put out a craft paper table cloth and supplied crayons…..how could I resist???

The biggest “popcorn” shrimp and hush puppy appetizer I’ve ever seen!

Mixed seafood boil – clams, mussels, shrimp, scallops, and snow and king crab legs!

A chocolate dessert so rich, I could only eat a couple bites!!!

Little meringue volcanoes floating in a vanilla cream sauce topped with almonds and caramel

And, the most entertaining of all were the spectacular sunsets and sunrises……I got to see the sunrise from my balcony each morning and the sunset from one of the decks on the other side of the ship

This sunrise is over the Golden Gate Bridge as we pulled back in to San Francisco at the end of the cruise

And, we’re docked…….cruise end…….and the beginning of the second half of my West Coast Adventure – posts will follow in the coming days to share that part!
So far, I think my favorite cruise line is Royal Caribbean…..they are ALL amazing and the differences that make one better than the other are subtle and personal – what makes one the best for me, might not make it the best for someone else – any “complaints” are nit-picky at best – hard to complain about being treated and fed like Royalty!!! 🙂 I have yet to try out Norwegian and Celebrity – so, I can only say Royal Caribbean is my favorite “so far”! 🙂
Here are some of my pros and cons about Princess:
PROS:

CONS:

Again – nit-picky stuff —- over all it was FANTABULOUS!!!!
So…….there’s the cruise part of my West Coast Adventure! Hope you enjoyed it!
What a gorgeous 70+ degree day it was here in Western NY, today!!! For me, it has been a day of settling back in to the real world after vacation. Megan made sure I got up at our usual time and followed our normal morning routine. Then, I tried out my new treadmill for a little stroll in the bedroom before heading out to run some errands and going to the store to stock up on some groceries. It was also an emotional day – one year ago, today, we lost our Mom! So, I paid a visit at Mt. Albion and had a great chat with her and my Dad.

Mom hated this photo, but it is one of my favorites….because it reminds me of a warm end of summer night we shared at the lake listening to an outdoor concert – memories of happier times together! I love and miss her so much!

Lenten Photo Challenge:

So…..perhaps some of you may have noticed I’ve been missing from my blog for a couple of weeks! I have a good excuse – really! I went on a little adventure!
Here’s the run down….in a nutshell…..with a few “teaser” photos (more will come in the days ahead):
I flew out to San Francisco on March 25th and got on the Grand Princess cruise ship for a West Coast Cruise. The cruise was one week long and made stops at Santa Barbara, Long Beach, San Diego, and Ensenada, Mexico. I enjoyed seven days on a beautiful ship and took some amazing shore excursions. It was wonderful!

A selfie while our ship was passing under the Golden Gate Bridge on the way out to sea!
Then…..when I got off the ship when we returned to San Francisco, I went to a hotel, instead of the airport. I spent five days sightseeing and adding to my sunburn in San Fransciso.

Fisherman’s Wharf

The corner of Haight and Ashbury Streets

Muir Woods

Sonoma and Napa Valley wineries
But, I wasn’t done, there…..I, then, took the Coastal Starlight Train for a 22 hour ride from San Francisco to Seattle. going through upper California, Oregon, and Washington State.

When I got to Seattle, I stayed a couple days and did more sightseeing.

At the top of the Space Needle…..after having brunch in the revolving restaurant

And, at the Pike Place Market!
This can definitely fall into the category of a trip that literally consisted of “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles……and Ships and Boats”!!! I covered a lot of ground – in fact, I covered the entire west coast from top to bottom! I colored in two more states that I had not previously visited – Oregon and Washington – and knocked several things off my bucket lists!!! I can’t wait to share all the details and some of the great photos I took with you all!
I got back home this evening……and I am ready for a good rest! hahaha
Yes, I kept up the Photos of the Day prompts and the Lenten Photos…..but, I only posted them on Instagram and Facebook each day. I will not catch them up on here — some of the photos above were Photos of the Day and the rest will likely show up in other posts I write about my many wonderful adventures over the past two weeks. So, you’ll get to see them – you just won’t necessarily know if they met a specific photo prompt or not! Sorry!
So, now that I’m home, I’ll restart the daily photo posts and watch for the more detailed posts about my great adventure on the west coast!
