Happy Independence Day!!!
Spent a wonderfully quiet and peaceful day! I visited with my brother and sister-in-law for a while in the early afternoon and I, of course, grilled out…..the corn and squash I bought yesterday and added sliced tomatoes, grapes, and cherries from the same farm market hop adventure! Delicious!!!

It was such a beautiful evening after the heat and mugginess of earlier in the day calmed down – I enjoyed time reading on my back deck!
Life is good, indeed!!!
What’s my favorite season, you ask? Well….it’s “corn season”, of course!!! Actually, it’s the entire season when you can go to open air farm markets and get the freshest, picked that morning, local fruits and veggies……but, my drop dead favorite part is when corn is in season!!! I could live on grilled, steamed, or roasted fresh corn on the cob and nothing else all season, if I thought I could get away with it….but, I’d be really sad if I eliminated summer squash, zucchini, tomatoes, peas, cucumbers, and all the rest from my daily menus!!!
I, personally, usually like the bigger kernel corn on the cob – when selecting ears from a basket at the farmer’s market, I search for the fattest ears I can find! LOL But…..I don’t refuse ANY size kernels…..the skinny ears are just fine with me, too!
When I was growing up, the field beside our house was corn most years (every few years, they switched to cabbage to put some nutrients back in the soil – they’d let a certain percentage of the crop rot and plow it under to enrich the soil). It wasn’t sweet corn, though – it was field corn (we always called it “cow corn”) – it was bigger and chewier than typical sweet corn and raised mainly to feed the cows. We’d go over to the edge of the field along our property and pick a few ears for Sunday dinner on occasion (yes, the farmer knew we did it and was OK with that — he was our neighbor). Maybe that’s why I like the fatter ears of sweet corn – I grew up on field corn!!!
The weather has been so good this year – no late snowfall or heavy freeze to stunt early crops – that it was difficult to find a corn field with corn stalks this short to get a photo that represents that wonderful old saying “knee high by the fourth of July”. There were a few other fields that aren’t much taller than this, but they were set back behind a deep ditch that I wasn’t about to wander through for the photo!
Most are already waist high or higher!!!
In fact, I was able to get some fresh ears at Rush’s today for my Fourth of July dinner! And, I saw some at other places, as well! So, some farmers are already picking their corn!
Corn is a huge crop in Orleans County — not only for sweet corn consumption and “cow corn”, but also for the local ethanol plant in Medina!
In addition to the corn I got from Rush’s, I picked up summer squash, zucchini, and grapes from Circle R and sweet cherries from Kirby’s…..I went to Kirby’s specifically to get edible pod peas – LOVE THEM!!! But, they didn’t have any. When I asked about them, they said those peas are struggling cause they don’t like the heat – they had a few this morning, but were gone by the time I got to their market. Hoping I can get there at the right time sometime before they are done for the season so I can at least get a couple handfuls to chomp on!!!
Something else I LOVE from Kirby’s: Apple Cider Slushies!!! They are soooooo good!!! This is the first one I’ve had this season!!! Ice cold, refreshing, and delicious!!!!
So much deliciousness, so little time……the fresh fruit/veggie season is just beginning, but it’ll be over before we know it…..gotta get my fill as much as possible throughout the summer and into the fall! With so many wonderful farm markets within just a few short miles of my house, it won’t be difficult!!!
It was a beautiful night last night, so I slept with my bedroom window open to let the wonderful fresh air blow in and freshen the room! It was so nice….until…..
About 2:00 am or so, I was jolted awake by an aroma so offensive, I wanted to do nothing more than hold my breath! Apparently, a visitor was wandering our neighborhood – likely very close beneath my wide open second story bedroom window!
Yep – Pepe LePew was spreading his perfume and it was filtering full force into my window and, therefore, into my nostrils! I pulled my blanket up over my head, hoping the scent would dissipate quickly. But, as expected, I had to get up to take care of some business and the scent followed me!
I really didn’t want to shut the window and turn the AC on, so I waited a bit longer to see if he would take his offensive cloud with him to some other location. Soon, it did start to not smell as strong and it wasn’t too long before I didn’t smell it anymore.
Once the atmosphere in the room was finally replaced with that nice fresh air again, I was able to go back to sleep and enjoy the rest of my night of peaceful dreams.
To Pepe: I always loved watching your cartoons as a child….you and your “live” friends are really quite cute…..BUT…..I implore you to PLEASE stay away from wherever I happen to be and please do not interrupt my sleep with your colorful aroma, again!
Last Wednesday when I was on the bus for the Mystery Tour (I wrote about it on Weds evening – scroll down to find it), we drove through the town of Leicester. When I saw the big water tower with “LEICESTER” boldly written on it, I was transported to a flashback memory!
Back in the late 70’s / early 80’s – I would have been in my early 20’s – I went to a jamboree in Leicester. It was a festival with several local bands playing all day long with lots of food and fun! Let’s just say that the “incident” in my memory bank was influenced by a lot of good country music, dancing, and beer…enough said on that!
With a significant amount of liquid courage surging through my veins, I gave in to my friends daring me to ride a mechanical bull….if you ever saw the movie “Urban Cowboy” with John Travolta and Debra Winger, you know what I mean…..or if you’ve ever been to a rodeo or similar event in the 70’s or 80’s – they were pretty popular back then! If you DON’T have a clue what I’m talking about, here’s a couple photos (there is NO photographic evidence of my time on the bull….I often thank the universe that Social Media and cell phone cameras weren’t invented until AFTER my wild stage):

A mechanical bull is a motorized thing that sorta looks like a bull and bucks and rotates while the person on it tries to stay on by holding on with only one hand. They use them to train bull riders.
Anyway…..the combination of urging from my friends and probably a tad too much liquid courage resulted in me agreeing to tame the bull! I could do it! I saw Debra Winger do it — it couldn’t be THAT hard, right? So, I signed the release form — I probably should have seen the writing on the wall when I had to sign a legal document that released the organizers of the event of any responsibility should I get injured and that I understood the risks AND that I claimed to be sober at the time of the ride!!! (ooppss)
As it turned out…..it was not the graceful, dare I say sexy, ride that Debra Winger portrayed in “Urban Cowboy” (I’ll post a clip after my story to remind those who saw it and so those who didn’t see it can see it). Nope — I got on, the operator started out slow and easy and amped it up once it looked like I got the hang of it…..what seemed like a decent amount of time ended up being a matter of seconds……I flew off the bull into the arms of the “spotter” standing beside the bull (I was a right good bit more “petite” back then, so he was able to easily catch me in mid-flight). My friends told me that it looked like I just “let go” after the first few seconds and “flew off”! All I knew was that I was riding and doing fine and all of a sudden, a strong, good looking guy had me cradled in his arms like a baby! 😉
I was fine – no problem – wasn’t hurt – just embarrassed about how totally UN-graceful I performed on my first (and only) ride on a mechanical bull! I went about the rest of the day and we all got a good laugh out of it.
Then…..I woke up the next morning…..man, was I sore!!! I could barely walk…..the insides of both my legs were covered with dark purple bruises from my “you know what” to my ankles and it took a couple weeks or more for the bruises and the pain to go away so I could walk like normal and not like I still had that bull between my legs!
I learned a lesson and never did it again…..but, it was fun at the time…..and it makes for a great memory and story that I lived to tell about!
Here’s how Debra Winger did it in Urban Cowboy:
