Movie Review – Fools Gold
I went to see Fools Gold today at the 10:00 early bird matinee in Sanford! This movie stars Kate Hudson, Matthew McConaughy, Donald Sutherland, and Alexis Dziena. It was a fairly good movie — not great, but not bad, and there were parts that were pretty good.New Ice Cream Flavors – My Review….

TGIF!!!! My life is a whirlwind right now — so busy — so much going on — so much excitement!!! I’m exhausted!!! ha-ha
Wednesday I had a great opportunity — I was invited go with some others from work to a panel discussion at the Umstead Hotel in Cary — the discussion was on “The Future of Community Colleges In North Carolina”. It was a fascinating discussion sponsored by the NC Cable Telecommunications Association and the NC Center for Public Policy Research. It was taped for airing on Public TV and well worth the time, if you are interested and get a chance to see it.
Yesterday was all about BPW (Business and Professional Women’s group) – I took a 1/2 a personal day so that I could cook the meal for the February meeting (it was my “turn”). On the menu: Chicken Cacciatore, egg noodles, garden salad, Italian bread, and a Rosa Marina dessert salad. It came out pretty darn good, if I say so myself (and the ladies seemed to like it). I love to cook, but when I do, I get carried away and cook enough for an ARMY!!! So, as per usual, there was a TON left over! It would take me a month to eat it all – so I called a friend that I knew would jump at the chance to take it off my hands! He met me at Riverbirch and I gave him a bunch of it. He was happy and I was glad to not have to toss it out!
The 18th is President’s Day and I don’t have to work — BUT — I have to get a crown on one of my molars that day, instead!!! On that same day, my Mom is having hip replacement surgery over 800 miles away!!!! I’m not going because there isn’t much I can do while she’s in the hospital and in rehab and my brother and his wife are there, so we decided it would be better to wait and do a visit some time later. But — it is gonna be AGONY knowing she’s going through such an ordeal and I won’t be there!!!! Not sure how much my brain will be able to function with that on my mind!!!
I messed up my bad knee – maybe cause I was on it a lot Weds evening and then all afternoon yesterday cooking – not sure – I don’t think I did anything else to it!!! But, last night it was really throbbing and swollen. I had to take some Advil last night so that the throbbing would let up and let me sleep!
I caught most of the new ABC show – Eli Stone – last night. It was actually pretty good — I didn’t think it would interest me, but I just might tune in again to see if it stays good.
Megan is snoring like a freight train on the love seat behind me! And she’s biting at the air — must be some dream she’s having……….ha-ha!!!
My Blog Roll Is Alive!
Man — what started out being a small list of local blogs that I could easily check a couple times a day without disturbing my daily activities has turned into a growing monster with a life all it’s own!!!! It has gotten HUGE!!! And the ones I visit regularly aren’t ALL on my blog roll – some are just in my favorites cause I don’t know how they would feel about me publicizing them!
Most of the blogs I visit are Sanford Herald folks — then there are some friends and other local bloggers that I don’t know outside of the blog world (maybe I’ll get to meet them someday). But all are interesting and/or fun to read!
If you have a local blog and don’t mind if I put it in my blog roll, please comment me and I’ll post it — the blog roll needs to feed it’s hunger for new names so it can stay alive!!!!

Ramblings on a Monday….
OK – it is bedtime, so I need to dump my thoughts so I can fall alseep easier…..
- So much to do to work through the transition to my new position! I made a list and need to get serious about checking off a few every day!
- You know what really erks me? Those gadget commercials where they advertise some great new gadget that is supposed to make your life easier and they show someone doing simple every day tasks without the new gadget and they make them look like incompetent idiots!!!! Like the whole world has never been able to do ANYTHING before they invented their wonderful gadget! The one that set me off today was a commercial for some scrapbooking tools – including a cutter thing. They show people trying to cut pictures with a pair of regular scissors and they can’t cut a straight line to save their life – they demolish the picture they are cutting! Now – c’mon!!!!
- I like to watch “House Hunters” on HGTV – it is fun to see what tips the scale for different people! They show the top three choices and then show which one they choose – what compromises will they make – what features lock in the sale for them? It is rarely the one that I would choose! ha-ha But – if we all had the same taste, it would be a really boring world!!! But – man, where do they get the prices for the homes they consider? Little bitty fixer-uppers that need a ton of work list for several hundred thousand dollars!!! I’m watching it now and the first place is a REAL DUMP and barely looks livable and the price is $450,000!!!! Are they nuts?????
- I had a really nutritious dinner tonight — I steamed 4 mini ears of corn and baked some onion rings……….now I have heart burn! ;-( Rolaids to the rescue!!!!
The girls are anxious to get to bed and I need to wind down and get some sleep!!!

Weekend Movie News
I did not go see “Over Her Dead Body” this weekend — even though it is on my list of movies I want to see, I don’t think it worth a special trip in to Cary to see it. If it had been on here in Sanford this weekend, I would have gone. So – unless Sanford gets it later or I happen to go to Cary for something else, I guess this one will wait for the DVD rental or when it comes out on cable.
I did see one on FX at 10:30 this morning that I enjoyed. It was “Little Black Book“, starring Brittany Murphy, Holly Hunter, Ron Livingston, and Kathy Bates. It was really cute. The story was about a girl who learns the hard way that it never pays to “snoop” – especially when what you are snooping on can be taken out of context! She comes across her boyfriend’s phone with all his appts and pictures and stuff on it and while he’s away, she looks through it and discovers that he has been keeping in touch with all his ex’s. She starts a campaign of finding ways to meet and talk to them so that she can get to know them without them knowing who she is. Of course it all back fires, but each encounter and her reactions to the wrong conclusions she draws are hysterical.
Best parts:
- Great Carly Simon music throughout – Brittany Murphy’s character is taught by her mother at an early age that anything can be applied to at least one of Carly Simon’s songs!
- The scene that tells about her meeting with ex # 2 — she is under the impression that the ex is a podiatrist, so she makes an appt with her to get her warts looked at. Come to find out, she is a gynocologist – not a podiatrist! So, the things that Brittany’s character says and does to explain her “planter’s” wart symptoms and where they are located makes for a hillarious miscommunication as the doctor and nurse are preparing to inspect and treat at totally different kind of wart located somewhat north of her feet!!!! I laughed so hard I was crying and could hardly breathe!!!!
While the rest of the world is watching the Superbowl, I am catching up on 3 days of tape of All My Children – I didn’t see Weds, Thurs, or Fri, so I’m behind!!! I need to get caught up before Monday’s episode!
Doodle Dude
What’s a Doodle Dude, you ask? Well, it is a new toy that the girls received in their Christmas gifts from their “Daddy”. Doodle Dude looks like a whacky dolphin or some other big blue fish. He is a soft plush toy that doodles a tune when you squeeze his belly. To help you imagine the sound it makes, think back to when those Hamster Dance videos that were all over the internet a few years ago — that nasaly “do de do de do” tunes they sang while dancing! That’s the sound this toy makes — it is Sooooooooooo funny!!!!
Needless to say, since it makes a strange sound, the girls were all totally fascinated with it!!! It was, by far, their favorite toy of all the new ones they received at Christmas!!! Success!!!!
Problems:
- There was only ONE toy and THREE girls who all thought it was the BEST!!!
- It is a soft plush toy – not something that typically lasts more than, say, 2 seconds!!!
Although # 1 is a big problem, I would really rather address # 2…….I was not used to total toy destruction before Katie came to live with me! Puddles would cuddle up with and squeak her soft plush toys for years – carrying them around like prized possessions! She would get a new raw hide bone and it would last her for MONTHS!
Then, Katie came and it was a whole different story! She would play with it until it bored her (usually a couple weeks) and then start to perform major surgery to find and remove the squeaker! But, she did let them last a little while — every day she would get all her toys out, play with them, and then put them back in their basket (I swear — she really did that and I never taught her how, either)!!!
Fast forward to Megan and Amy………they weren’t here more than two days and a whole basket of plush toys were GONE – totally annilliated!!!! So, I started to search for “indestructable” dog toys and found that, when it came to Megan and Amy, there is no such thing!!!! EVERYTHING ends up getting “worked” until they break through to where they can get a chunk off and then it is history — some just take a little longer than others! They do have some rubber squeaky balls that they don’t “eat” – they could, but they don’t – they must really like them enough to not want to destroy them! They just walk around squeaking them for hours!
So – back to the Doodle Dude: Since I, too, really enjoy this toy (he really is fun to listen to and to watch the girls react to), I didn’t want him to meet the same fate as so many plush toys before him. So, I keep it put up and only get it out and allow them to play with it when I can play too and supervise!
This morning was one of those times — I got the Doodle Dude out and sat on the couch and squeezed his belly. He started his nasaly song, I made him dance on my knee, and the girls came RUNNING from the other room where they were snoozing!!! They sat and watched him dance for a few seconds and then started an excited frenzy of dancing, barking, and trying to get him from me!!! We played like that for a while – until Katie got tired and gave up and Megan and Amy got mad at each other cause each thought the other was too close to getting Doodle Dude away from Mommie (aahh – # 1 did get addressed, after all)!!!
I put Doodle Dude back in his safe place and the girls went back to their nap………..life is good!!!!
