Forging a New Path

I am about to start on an exciting journey down a new path along my career. I have accepted an amazing opportunity to take on a challenging new role – same employer, same location, different position! The whirlwind of emotions are really overwhelming – excitement, anticipation, worry, nervous, sad to let go of the old, happy to start something new, leaving my comfort zone, anxious to find a new niche…………I’m so like Sybil right now!!! The actual effective date is the 16th, but I start the transition right away. My life will be really crazy for a while, but I am so looking forward to this!!!!

What a great way to start off a new year —- let’s do a “happy dance”!!!

Weekend Movie News

I did not go see “Over Her Dead Body” this weekend — even though it is on my list of movies I want to see, I don’t think it worth a special trip in to Cary to see it. If it had been on here in Sanford this weekend, I would have gone. So – unless Sanford gets it later or I happen to go to Cary for something else, I guess this one will wait for the DVD rental or when it comes out on cable.

I did see one on FX at 10:30 this morning that I enjoyed. It was “Little Black Book“, starring Brittany Murphy, Holly Hunter, Ron Livingston, and Kathy Bates. It was really cute. The story was about a girl who learns the hard way that it never pays to “snoop” – especially when what you are snooping on can be taken out of context! She comes across her boyfriend’s phone with all his appts and pictures and stuff on it and while he’s away, she looks through it and discovers that he has been keeping in touch with all his ex’s. She starts a campaign of finding ways to meet and talk to them so that she can get to know them without them knowing who she is. Of course it all back fires, but each encounter and her reactions to the wrong conclusions she draws are hysterical.

Best parts:

  1. Great Carly Simon music throughout – Brittany Murphy’s character is taught by her mother at an early age that anything can be applied to at least one of Carly Simon’s songs!
  2. The scene that tells about her meeting with ex # 2 — she is under the impression that the ex is a podiatrist, so she makes an appt with her to get her warts looked at. Come to find out, she is a gynocologist – not a podiatrist! So, the things that Brittany’s character says and does to explain her “planter’s” wart symptoms and where they are located makes for a hillarious miscommunication as the doctor and nurse are preparing to inspect and treat at totally different kind of wart located somewhat north of her feet!!!! I laughed so hard I was crying and could hardly breathe!!!!

While the rest of the world is watching the Superbowl, I am catching up on 3 days of tape of All My Children – I didn’t see Weds, Thurs, or Fri, so I’m behind!!! I need to get caught up before Monday’s episode!

Doodle Dude

What’s a Doodle Dude, you ask? Well, it is a new toy that the girls received in their Christmas gifts from their “Daddy”. Doodle Dude looks like a whacky dolphin or some other big blue fish. He is a soft plush toy that doodles a tune when you squeeze his belly. To help you imagine the sound it makes, think back to when those Hamster Dance videos that were all over the internet a few years ago — that nasaly “do de do de do” tunes they sang while dancing! That’s the sound this toy makes — it is Sooooooooooo funny!!!!

Needless to say, since it makes a strange sound, the girls were all totally fascinated with it!!! It was, by far, their favorite toy of all the new ones they received at Christmas!!! Success!!!!

Problems:

  1. There was only ONE toy and THREE girls who all thought it was the BEST!!!
  2. It is a soft plush toy – not something that typically lasts more than, say, 2 seconds!!!

Although # 1 is a big problem, I would really rather address # 2…….I was not used to total toy destruction before Katie came to live with me! Puddles would cuddle up with and squeak her soft plush toys for years – carrying them around like prized possessions! She would get a new raw hide bone and it would last her for MONTHS!

Then, Katie came and it was a whole different story! She would play with it until it bored her (usually a couple weeks) and then start to perform major surgery to find and remove the squeaker! But, she did let them last a little while — every day she would get all her toys out, play with them, and then put them back in their basket (I swear — she really did that and I never taught her how, either)!!!

Fast forward to Megan and Amy………they weren’t here more than two days and a whole basket of plush toys were GONE – totally annilliated!!!! So, I started to search for “indestructable” dog toys and found that, when it came to Megan and Amy, there is no such thing!!!! EVERYTHING ends up getting “worked” until they break through to where they can get a chunk off and then it is history — some just take a little longer than others! They do have some rubber squeaky balls that they don’t “eat” – they could, but they don’t – they must really like them enough to not want to destroy them! They just walk around squeaking them for hours!

So – back to the Doodle Dude: Since I, too, really enjoy this toy (he really is fun to listen to and to watch the girls react to), I didn’t want him to meet the same fate as so many plush toys before him. So, I keep it put up and only get it out and allow them to play with it when I can play too and supervise!

This morning was one of those times — I got the Doodle Dude out and sat on the couch and squeezed his belly. He started his nasaly song, I made him dance on my knee, and the girls came RUNNING from the other room where they were snoozing!!! They sat and watched him dance for a few seconds and then started an excited frenzy of dancing, barking, and trying to get him from me!!! We played like that for a while – until Katie got tired and gave up and Megan and Amy got mad at each other cause each thought the other was too close to getting Doodle Dude away from Mommie (aahh – # 1 did get addressed, after all)!!!

I put Doodle Dude back in his safe place and the girls went back to their nap………..life is good!!!!

Myra’s Kitchen and The Temple Theater

I had such a good time tonight!!! It was a really nice day — sunny, warm, quiet! I did a lot of playing with the girls and doing as little as I could possibly get away with. I started out the day with a big bowl of oatmeal that hit the spot so well, it set the stage for the entire day!

About 4:30 or so, I decided it was time to go get something to eat and considered going to see the new show at the Temple Theater. I was trying to decide where to go for dinner. I considered several of the places I usually like to go and some that I haven’t been to in some time. Then, I noticed Bill Horner’s blog post about the Dining In and Out guide in today’s Sanford Herald. Since I typically read the Herald on line, I sometimes miss the inserts……so I was happy for his reminder to go look for it!!! To help me decide on dinner, I looked through the guide. I noticed the page for Myra’s Kitchen! I had heard about it from co-workers and have been meaning to try it out, but just haven’t, yet. I decided to take the hint and go!!!! I am sooooooooooooooooo glad I did!!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Myra’s Kitchen – Attention anyone in or within driving distance of Sanford: if you haven’t given Myra’s Kitchen (located at 1401 Colon Rd) a try, you need to!!! The small restaurant is lovely in blue and white country decor, the music playing to set the mood is country music, and the tag line “Home Cooking at its Best” is an understatement! Buddy and Myra Kitchens (the owners) told me they recently began serving dinner on Saturday evenings. I had one of the many delicious sounding specials – Chicken and Dumplings, corn nuggets, and mashed potatoes. It was served in a HUGE bowl and was the best chicken and dumplings I’ve ever had! A couple at a near by table had other things that looked incredible, as well — and large servings!!! I was pretty full when I finished dinner, but wanted to see what their desserts were like. I was told of several great sounding desserts – including butter pecan pound cake and cobblers! I was then told that there was a blueberry crunch in the oven, but it wasn’t quite ready, yet! I chose to wait for that — I LOVE BLUEBERRIES!!! It was sooooooo worth the wait!!!! Amazing!!!! In summary — Myra’s Kitchen is quaint, friendly, serves up delicious food with something for just about anyone’s taste, and large servings at a reasonable price!!! What else could you ask for?????
Then – I decided to go see if there were any open seats at the Temple Theater for Super Sounds of the 70s! I was really happy to hear that I could get in!
The Temple Theater – Super Sounds of the 70’s – I was early and the box office wasn’t open, yet. So, I sat out on the bench outside the theater – the one that is painted so appropriately whimsical with the Comedy and Tragedy masks and harlequin design – and “people watched”. It was nice, but soon turned chilly, so I went and sat in the car and called my Mom to kill some time. This show is so good — it is fun, energetic, and entertaining. Whether you are a 70’s Flower Child or not, the music, dancing, and costumes promise to get you bee bopping to the beats. The actors sang and danced and did a fantastic job at performing many of the decade’s great hits – like the beautiful “Precious and Few” by Climax, John Lennon’s amazing “Imagine”, “Aquarius” from the musical “Hair”. One of my favorites was the excellently done rendition of Helen Reddy’s “I Am Woman” – the theme song for the Women’s Movement. AND – all those anti-Disco meanies who told us that Disco was DEAD obviously LIED to us – it is NOT dead – it is alive and well at the Temple Theater. The proof is in the entire theater’s reaction to Disco anthems like “Disco Inferno”, “Boogie Fever”, “Y.M.C.A.”. and Donna Summer’s incredible “Last Dance”. What fun this was — Hurry and get your tickets! The run ends on February 17th – you don’t want to miss this one!
I’m now enjoying the AKC Eukanuba National Dog Championship on Animal Planet — the girls have noticed the parade of dogs on the screen, too — they are watching and taking bets between them on what dogs will win!
Puppy Breath
Is there any better smell in the world than Puppy Breath? It is a smell that makes you want to cuddle close with a wiggly puppy that is eagerly licking at your face and just eat him/her with a spoon!!! It is a smell that makes you feel like a child all happy and wide-eyed over the chance to hug a puppy!!! It is a smell that warms your heart and gives you something to smile about all day long!!! It is a smell that rivals all other smells and comes out on top as THE best smell in the whole wide world – bar none!!!
What causes Puppy Breath? Why do they lose it after a while? Why does it turn into Dog Breath (a totally different smell and definitely NOT on the “great smells of the world” list….)?
These are the questions I am pondering today (along with “whatever happened to Peter Frampton’s beautiful hair?”) The reason I am pondering these questions is because my wonderful girls no longer have Puppy Breath! They have developed Dog Breath!!! Their teeth are in good shape and taken care of, but they still can knock you over with their breath from time to time! This morning was one of those times — I’m thinking they got into something I don’t want to know about out in the back yard this morning……
Some years ago, I read that Ben and Jerry’s was planning to launch a new ice cream flavor called “Puppy Breath” — I thought “wow – how brilliant! everyone will want to try that one! if it tastes half as good as the real smell smells like it would taste, it will be FABULOUS!!!!” After all, people flock to buy ice cream flavors like “Chubby Hubby” and “Chunky Monkey” – why not “Puppy Breath”? That sounds so much more appetizing than the other two I just mentioned!!! Although they didn’t provide any details of ingredients or taste, I imagined a light brown color with a very mild coffee/german chocolate flavor – YUM!!! I watched and watched for it — but, alas, it has never come out! I bet it was just a joke that suckered me into thinking it was real…………how cruel!!!!!
Is that REALLY Peter Frampton????
First — I admit it — I like the Geico commercials — the cavemen, the little Gecco guy, the ones with the celebrities that “help” the Geico customers tell their story……..the marketing folks who came up with these are geniuses!!!! REALLY!!!!
But — every time I see the one with Peter Frampton, I do a double take — is that REALLY Peter Frampton? And, if so, what happened to his beautiful curly hair?
Now — THIS is the Peter Frampton I know and love!!!! (The part where he says “I wanted to pull my hair out” is so perfect!!!! ha-ha-ha)
Ramblings of an Insomniac
Well, here I am at 2:30 am — not sleeping, like I should be! I didn’t sleep well again last night, so I was so tired by the time I got home from work that I curled up on the couch to watch some TV and fell asleep! I slept there for about 3 hours, but the problem with that is that it really wasn’t “quality” sleep time, but it was just enough that now I can’t sleep when I’m SUPPOSED to sleep!!!! It’s a vicious cycle that I go through every now and then — I get my sleep patterns out of whack and I’m all screwed up for a while. I should be able to get back on track over the weekend – I hope!
So – what’s on my mind at 2:30 am???????
I have a major deficiency that creates a problem in my ability to communicate with the girls — I can’t whistle!!!! I never have been able to whistle!!! I try and either nothing but air comes out or I get a little faint squeak with the air………….every now and then, something that vaguely resembles a whistle materializes, but not often! I’ve tried the regular way to whistle, I’ve tried doing it through my teeth, I’ve tried using my fingers — nothing seems to work! My theory is that my over-bite is the reason I can not whistle, but I have no proof or research to back that up (hey – maybe the government should spend millions of our tax dollars to do a study on why some people can’t whistle – maybe they will conclude that non-whistlers have over-bites in common……….that will give me the proof I need). I actually don’t really care that I can’t whistle – until I need to get the attention of one or all of the girls! Usually, all I have to do to get them to come in the house is open the door and they all come running. But, if they are on a mission to seek out a smell or tree a squirrel, I have to get their attention — and try as I may — whistling for them just isn’t an option!!! I keep a whistle on the mantle beside the back door, in case I need to supplement my inability to create the sound myself!
Speaking of my over-bite — I was really self conscious of it when I was a child — I would put my hand in front of my mouth when I smiled or force myself to smile with my lips closed! But, then, someone came along that also had an over-bite and had a smile that would melt my socks off – I realized that the over-bite doesn’t ruin a smile – it gives it character! That person was Bobby Sherman – teen idol, singer (Easy Come, Easy Go / Julie, Julie, Julie Do You Love Me / Etc.), TV star (Shindig! – 1964-1968 / Here Come The Brides – 1968-1970). I had such a crush on Bobby Sherman — he was my favorite of all the teen idols that I was madly in love with (others include, but are not limited to, Davy Jones of the Monkees, David Cassidy, Peter Noone of Hermans Hermits, etc.). I would write short stories that put me and my friends in exciting adventures with our fabulous boyfriends – I would pair up each friend with a teen idol as their boyfriend and mine would ALWAYS be Bobby Sherman!!! Just look at that face — those eyes — that smile — that hair!!!!! (sigh, drool – he still melts my socks off! ha-ha)
Well, it is now 3:00 am and I think I might be getting sleepy — I think I’ll head to bed and see if I can fall asleep — maybe I’ll dream about Bobby Sherman (one can only hope……).
Good night!
What a day….
Whew — I’m glad it is bed time!!! I didn’t get much sleep last night at all – I tossed and turned – the last time I noticed the clock, it was 4:00 AM……….
So – I was pretty tired most of the day today! Between the sleep deprivation, listening to Wayne Newton in my head all day, having a really hectic day at work, rushing home to take care of the girls after work, and then running out to attend the Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet, I’m definitely ready for a good night’s sleep! I sure hope I get one!!!!
Here’s to the Sandman visiting me and putting a really good sleep spell on me!!! Good night!!!
Danke Schoen
I woke up this morning to my radio alarm clock and, as happens quite often, the song that woke me up stuck in my head all day long!!! I found myself listening over and over to this song!!! Most of the time when this happens, it is a song I can’t stand and it eats at me all day long!!! ha-ha-ha
Today, it wasn’t necessarily a song I would seek out, but at least it had a lively beat and wasn’t TOTALLY irritating! I actually found myself bouncing and clicking my fingers to the beat in my head – I didn’t even realize I was doing it — I just looked up and there was someone standing at the door to my office watching me and I realized what I was doing and we both laughed — I had to explain that I was bee-bopping to Wayne Newton performing just for me in my brain!!!
~~~~~~~~
So, since I had to hear it all day, I thought I would try something out — I am going to post this and see if I can create a subliminal effect and get anyone else to get it stuck in their head!!! Leave me a comment to let me know if I am successful — I’m really hoping I can pull this off!

First – here are some new lyrics I wrote to commemorate my experience today:
~~~~~~~~
Danke Schoen, darling Danke Schoen
Thank you for, the music in my brain,
I faded away in a cool daydream,
tapped my feet, bounced to the beat, it was sweet, so to speak.
~~~~~~~~
__________________________________________________________________
And now – the REAL lyrics – ENJOY!!!!
~~~~~~~~
Danke Schoen, darling Danke Schoen.
Thank you for all the joy and pain.
Picture shows, second balcony,
was the place we’d meet, second seat, go Dutch treat, you were sweet.
~~~~~~~~
Danke Schoen, darling Danke Schoen.
Thank you for walks down lovers lane.
I can see, hearts carved on a tree,
letters inter-twined, for all time, yours and mine, that was fine.
~~~~~~~~
Danke Schoen, darling Danke Schoen.
Thank you for funny cards from Spain.
I recall, Central Park in fall,
how you tore your dress, what a mess, I confess, that’s not all.
~~~~~~~~
Danke Schoen, darling Danke Schoen.
Thank you for seeing me again.
Though we go, on our seperate ways,
still the memory stays, for always, my heart says,
~~~~~~~~
Danke Schoen. Danke Schoen, Auf Wiedersehn, Danke Schoen.
Movies I’m Looking Forward To….
There are several movies that have been catching my eye in the “Coming Attractions” clips showing in the theaters now. Two of which have been advertised heavily on TV, as well, and one I haven’t seen much on, but did see an extended clip at the theater on Sunday! I plan to jump on them as soon as they are at a theater near me:
________________________________________________________________
Fools Gold (opening Feb 8th) is the one I am most looking forward to. It stars Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson. The story sounds cute, but that isn’t the main reason it is on this list. The main reason is Matthew and Kate!!! Both are sure bets – they rarely (if ever) disappoint me. Kate (much like her mother) is adorable in everything she does! But, let’s not forget that this winning team already proved they have great on-screen chemistry in How to Lose A Guy In 10 Days!!!!! This is sure to be a winner!!!! ________________________________________________________________
Over Her Dead Body opens Feb 1st starring Eva Longoria and looks like it will be a fun couple of hours, too! I like Eva Longoria in Desperate Housewives, but the only time I saw her on the big screen was a disappointment – The Sentinel (the movie was good, but she was forgettable in it). But, I can’t help but want to give this one a try. I like those sappy movies – I’m drawn to them like a woman with PMS is drawn to chocolate!!! The trailers also bring to mind two older movies that had similar story lines – both of which I LOVED!!! Chances Are (Cybill Shepherd, Robert Downey Jr, Ryan O’Neal, Mary Stuart Masterson) and Kiss Me Goodbye (Sally Field, James Caan, Jeff Bridges) both were delights! If this is 1/2 as good as they were, it just might be worth the price of admission! (BTW – if you haven’t seen one or both of these – I recommend they be on your DVD rental list soon!)
_______________________________________________________________
I haven’t seen anything on TV about 88 Minutes – just the one trailer this weekend when I was at Crossroads 20! It stars Al Pacino and is a Drama/Thriller about a guy who receives threatening phone calls and messages telling him he has 88 minutes to live!!! The previews looked intense and is definitely one I want to hear more about and will probably go see. Not only cause it looks like it might be good, but also because – HEY – it’s Al Pacino!!!!! This one opens April 8th!
Watch for my reviews when I finally get to see them —- See you at the Movies!!!!
