Movie Review – Untraceable

I saw Untraceable at the Crossroads 20 theater in Cary today. Man, was that intense!!! I was concerned that it would be too graphic for my taste, but they did a nice job of showing just enough to get the point across without being gory!!

I liked this movie — it won’t go on my “DVDs to buy” list, but it kept my interest and maintained a good energy level – it wasn’t bad. There were a couple points where it started to get a little slow, but it picked up again nicely. It was predictable, but that didn’t take away from the movie – I was still on the edge of my seat – if only because of what those poor saps were going though. The story was good (could have been done a little better, but the concept was intriguing), the acting incredible, and the characters were believable. Diane Lane is such a good actress — she was exceptional in her attempt to convey the deep feelings her character was going through — the concern, fear, and compassion was evident in every expression she conveyed.

My main complaint was that it was very GRAY — all the scenes were drab, no one wore any color, and the whole movie appeared dull…….also, the filming was all over the place — many of the scenes were up close and scanned fast – they made me dizzy! ha-ha

The concept/story itself was scary because the world today makes it quite possible – there are so many twisted people out there that could easily pull off something so heinous and even more who would enjoy watching it!!! The story is this:

Diane Lane plays an FBI agent that investigates internet crime – people who pirate music and movies, internet porn, hackers, etc….. her team stumbles on a web site called “killwithme.com” operated by a guy who tortures and murders people and broadcasts their torment live over the internet. Each one is tortured/murdered differently, but the common theme is that the method of torture is connected to his computer and the more hits he gets, the faster the torture is administered!!! After the first one, the rest go faster and faster because the site becomes so popular and gets more and more hits!!! Of course, it becomes “personal” for Lane’s character because the suspect gets her family involved and targets one of her team members, then he goes after HER. The ending comes on and is over really fast and ends abruptly!

All in all, it was a fairly good movie — I wouldn’t call it a GREAT suspense thriller, but I’d give it one thumb up and 3 1/2 stars!
