The ties that bind us to our past…

Very little ties us to our past like music.  How often does a song come on the radio that brings up a very specific memory or time period in our lives?  Music is the single most defining trigger of memories for me.  And none are stronger than Procol Harum’s A Whiter Shade of Pale!

I’m not really sure why, though – it was a favorite song of mine, for sure, but there were a lot of other more important songs and memories than this one.

From the very first note, I can physically feel my body relax, a sense of peace waves through me, and I am instantly swept back to dances at the bowling alley in Albion, NY in the early-mid 1970s!  I can feel myself dancing with a date and find myself swaying as we dance in my mind.  I remember going to the bowling alley a lot for dances and always having a good time, but wonder what makes this song stand out and why it has a much more instant and strong memory tie than any song that triggers memories for me.  And it really does — every time I hear it — no matter where I am or what I’m doing — it instantly gives me an amazing inner peace and distinct physical feelings!  It simply makes me happy — I only wish I could put together more of the context around what was so special about that particular memory!

Movie Review – The Next Three Days

I don’t remember seeing any trailers for Russell Crowe’s new movie, The Next Three Days.  I noticed the title when I looked up what movies might be of interest to me this weekend.  When I read the synopsis, I decided it might be one I’d enjoy.  So, I saw it on Saturday after I may hair / pedi appointment – nice “me” day!

The movie stars Russell Crowe as John Brennan who seems to be enjoying life with his wife, Lara (played by Elizabeth Banks), and son, Luke (played by Ty Simpkins) - a happy, loving, affectionate family.  Then, suddenly, their world turns upside down one peaceful morning when an army of police and detectives barge into their home to arrest Lara for the murder of her boss.  They had a serious disagreement the day before and the boss was found dead in the parking garage later that evening – Lara’s co-workers witnessed the argument, her fingerprints were on the murder weapon, the victim’s blood was on her coat, and a co-worker saw her leave the parking garage just as he discovered the body!  Slam dunk!  Lara tried to tell them about another woman that she saw and how she assumes they can account for the blood and fingerprints, but no one would listen – she is sentenced to life in prison.  After three years, all their hopes of appeals are ended with a final denial – she’s not getting out!  She becomes suicidal and John becomes desperate to find a way to get his wife out of prison and get their family back together.  So, he starts to research options and comes across a book by a guy who successfully broke out of seven prisons and he begins his elaborate plan to break her out and flee the country!

I definitely had mixed emotions about this one — on one hand, it was a very good story and a good cast — on the other hand, it was slow and bounced around a lot.  It runs just over two hours and, given what they included in the story line, it could have easily been shortened to 90 minutes without cutting anything important out.  If they wanted a two-hour movie, they should have added more depth to make it worth sitting there so long.  As for the bouncing around part — it opened with one of the scenes much later in the film (John is driving with blood on his face and you hear someone dying in the back seat), then it jumps to a dinner out with his brother and their wives where Lara talks about the fight she had with her boss, then it jumps right to the arrest the next morning with a few flash backs from the murder scene, then it jumps right to three years later.  It really isn’t “confusing”, per se, and you can follow it, but it still didn’t make a whole lot of sense — and why did they choose the opening scene?  Other than it being a defining scene of John’s efforts to break Lara out of jail, it doesn’t really strike me as one that you would choose to frame the rest of the movie – just didn’t make sense to me.

I also expected more action — there is one nail-biting scene where I gasped “oh my God” out loud, but that was about it.  Even the scene where John goes to a meth lab to steal their money doesn’t have as much action as it could have had.

All that aside, it was still a good story and cast.  His plan is genius, even if his inexperience in underhanded dealings does get in the way a lot – and he doesn’t give up when he runs into a brick wall!  He thinks it though and changes the plan as needed to get the results he wants – very good story!!!  I was disappointed in a couple of the casting choices, though.  For instance, they have the great actor Liam Neeson portraying Damon Pennington – the author of the book that sparks John’s journey – and they only have him in one roughly less than 5 minute scene!  What?  You pay Liam Neeson to be in your film and you only have him on-screen for a blink of an eye?  Really?  And the other disappointment was in their use of Brian Dennehy as John’s father – he is in several scenes, but has little or no lines!  John barely speaks to his father – there is some history there that is alluded to, but not fully explained – so they don’t have any real dialog, but they do have a very emotional interaction toward the end.  I would have liked for them to utilize both actors more — they surely could have added a lot to the story.

With all that said, you’re probably thinking I’m gonna rate this one low — well, I’m not!  I wasn’t happy with the slow pace and bouncing around, but I think there was a lot that made up for it and it really didn’t ruin the movie for me.  So – I rate this one a solid B-, but do recommend maybe waiting until it comes out on NetFlix – going to the theater results in spending a lot of money to sit and feel like it is dragging on too long in most scenes and I did feel a little cheated regarding the lack of action – watching it for a lot less $$$ would have been preferred.  But, I am glad I watched it!

What a lovely weekend…

This has been one of the most pleasant weekends I’ve had in a long time.  Nothing special going on, really, and I’ve had weekends where I’ve done more fun stuff, but this one just seemed to stand out!  One reason was the weather!  Is it really the middle of November?  Two absolutely gorgeous 70 degree days to set the stage for total enjoyment of anything you may want to do.  Can’t argue with that!

Riding around town has been a joy, too — the weather helped, but the best part was the beautiful autumn colors out in full force.  I’ve written many times about how I love the fall season and miss the strong characteristics that you find in the north-east.  But, I’m also happy that this area is not so far south that it loses the change of seasons.  We do get a fairly impressive autumn here and I really do enjoy it.

So – yesterday I took in a movie (scroll to the next post for a review) and did my grocery shopping.  But I also spent a lot of time just bumming around the house and playing with the girls.

Today, I went in to work for a couple of hours, then met a friend for brunch at Cafe 121, and then just drove around checking out the fall colors and breathing in the beautiful fresh air.  I went to check out the new Big Lots — nice!!!  I have a feeling their grand opening numbers will be pretty impressive — that place was PACKED!!!  And people were filling their carts!  It was definitely “the place to be” in Sanford today!  I ran into several people I know all there at the same time – I didn’t see a soul I knew in WalMart or Lowes Home Improvement when I popped in those two stores!

But, the most fun I had today was dancing around like a wild woman with the girls in the living room!  I cranked up the classic rock and danced and sang and they jumped around with me and howled and barked!!!!  It was a blast!!!

I love having plans and doing fun or interesting things on the weekends, but I also really cherish the care-free, fly by the seat of my pants type of weekends that end up being a hodge podge of nothing that turns into one big weekend full of everything!

Movie Review – Morning Glory

Saturday was an amazing day – weather-wise.  It was pleasantly warm with a gorgeous, clear sky.  It set the mood for a lovely day – one that I enjoyed thoroughly!  I did some things around the house and played with the girls in the morning, went to see a matinée, and got my groceries.  I managed to be semi-productive and do it in a totally easy-going sort of way.  I drank in the day and it was perfect!

One thing that made the day so enjoyable was deciding to see Morning Glory during my matinée outing.  It was one of three choices that I debated about while puttering around the house in the morning.  The choices were all very different in nature – Morning Glory, Red, and Unstoppable - so, I had to be sure I picked the right one to support my mood and how I wanted to feel for the rest of the day.  I wanted it to be a relaxed, stress-free day, so the tense Unstoppable was crossed off the mental list.  I wanted to laugh and feel good all day – both of the remaining two would have made me laugh, but I decided a romantic comedy would fit the total bill better than an action comedy…….so, Morning Glory it was!  I still want to see the other two, but another day.

The cast – can’t go wrong with Harrison Ford, Diane Keaton, and Rachel McAdams at the helm!  I adore Harrison Ford – a wonderful, well-rounded actor who can do adventure, comedy, and drama with equal ease.  Diane Keaton is definitely more than a “little” quirky, but I love what she does with the characters she portrays.  Rachel McAdams is an actress who brings funny and delightful to life.  And then there is Jeff Goldblum – another quirky actor who always makes even the smallest role stand out – and the yummy Patick Wilson – enough said – in supporting roles that add much more than “support” to the success of the film!

The plot – Becky Fuller (McAdams), a perky, energetic, workaholic TV producer, is fired from a small local morning show in the beginning of the movie.  She sends out resumes, revised resumes, and updated revised resumes to all the networks and local stations around the NYC/NJ area and hounds them with follow-up calls until Jerry Barnes (Goldblum) of national network IBS calls her to fill the Executive Producer position for Day Break – their morning show that is fourth in the ratings and on the brink of cancellation.  Becky is charged with revitalizing the ratings or the network execs will pull the plug on the show.  She soon finds out that it isn’t going to be an easy task.  On her first day, she fires the male co-host – a diva with a foot-fetish that refuses to attend the morning staff meetings or do anything that makes him get up out of the desk chair on the show.  Colleen Peck (Keaton) is the female co-host – a former beauty pageant queen with an attitude.  There is NO budget for the show and everything and everyone is unraveling.  In her search for a new co-host, she discovers that Mike Pomeroy (Ford) is under contract with the network, but not utilized – the multi-award winning news anchor has been banished from nightly news and is essentially just being paid out his contract because he, as another producer (Wilson) at the network describes him, is “the third worst person in the world”!  She excitedly offers the co-host job to him while reminding him that his contract stipulates that if an offer is extended that he refuses, the network can drop his contract and not continue paying the multi-million dollar balance.  Of course, he reluctantly accepts the offer, but makes it abundantly clear to everyone that he feels it is FAR beneath him by only doing what is absolutely necessary and being totally uncooperative, grumpy, and disagreeable.  As a side note, Becky starts a relationship with dreamy producer Adam Bennett (Wilson), but is far too busy saving her job, the show, her reputation, and her self-esteem to focus on the relationship, so it too, starts to fall apart.

The movie is funny, light, and delightful.  The characters are fun and mesh well together.  The story is interesting and enjoyable.  Put it all together and you have a winner!  The only part that didn’t quite set right with me was Harrison Ford’s deep, raspy, Clint Eastwood-ish voice - I enjoyed his gruff, grisly character, but I thought the voice was a little much.  I’m not sure if his voice is actually getting that raspy (possible) or if he was putting it on, but I was a little put off by it.  Not so much that it took away from the character or the movie – just enough that it was unpleasantly noticeable.

Overall, I loved it!  I give it an A- and highly recommend it for anyone looking for an enjoyable couple of hours.

Just thinkin’

One possession I absolutely, truly enjoy more than anything is my car – my pony!  There is nothing in the world more relaxing, satisfying, and enjoyable than just cruising around with the top down and classic rock blaring on the radio.  I would be the happiest person in the world if every day was a top down day and I had at least a couple of hours each day to be out enjoying it in the pony!!!  I have always wanted a Mustang – loved them forever – I wouldn’t be surprised if the very first model that rolled out of Detroit turned my head even back then (although I don’t actually remember, since I was only 7 in April of 1964)!

Even though they ranked top on my list of all time favorite cars, I never owned one – I had a couple Camaros, but never a Mustang!  Until April 2005 when I found the car of my dreams!  I had promised myself a little red convertible as a 50th birthday (mid-life crisis) gift, but when the new retro Mustangs came out in the fall of 2004, I was obsessed with them!  But – it had to be a convertible and Ford didn’t release the convertible version until the Spring of 2005 – 41 years after the first Mustang rolled off the production line (not sure if that was intentional, but an interesting fact all the same).  So — I got my “gift” a year and a half early.

I went to great effort to find just the right one — it HAD to be a GT and it HAD to be a convertible and it HAD to be red…….and I didn’t really want to go through the hassle (and wait time) of ordering one!  So, I checked out Ford dealers on Sundays (never go to a dealership when they are open if you’re just lookin’….) and searched inventories on-line.  I found only ONE car that met all my requirements in the state of NC!!!  Really???  It was at Capital Ford.  So – I went there on a Sunday to check it out and see if it was everything I thought it would be…………and it wasn’t there!!!  They had several other colors – most V6 coupes, but not the one I wanted!  Was I too late?  Did someone else snatch it up already and their internet inventory just wasn’t updated, yet?  So, I sent an email to them to inquire about it.  A salesman called me on Monday and said they DID still have it, but the big boss had taken it for the weekend — What????  Oh well, OK – so, it will have a few more miles on it than I would like to see for a car that likely was hot off the truck from the factory!  I went to talk about it…….I HATE dealing with car salesman!!!!  But, I went prepared — I knew exactly what the Mustang cost, exactly what my Grand Am was worth, and exactly what I was willing to pay — and I didn’t let on for a second that I’d do almost anything to get that car!!!  I didn’t get the deal I wanted, so I walked away……but I didn’t get out of the parking lot before the salesman came out with an offer that was just slightly more than what I wanted and I took it!!!  I drove the pony home that same day — with the top down — all the way from Raleigh to Sanford — on a very cool April day!!!  And the rest is history!!!

So, with all that said, why am I suddenly inundated with thoughts about getting a different car?  SERIOUSLY???  Maybe it is because I have owned this car longer than any other car I’ve ever owned — she’ll be 6 years old in April and I’ve never owned a car more than 4 years (and usually less)!!!  I’m less than 100 miles from turning it over to 50,000 miles, ever had a minute’s trouble with it (well, except for that time the battery died when I was downtown having lunch and missed a 1:00 meeting with my boss, but a tow, a new battery, and an apology later, all was fine), and am still head over heels in love with it!  Why am I even considering another car — it is like cheating on your spouse, even if just mentally!!!  What is wrong with me???

The thoughts I keep having are about those new modernized station wagons!  Yeah – what a leap from a muscle car to a station wagon – isn’t that like a “Mom” car?  What do I need with a “Mom” car?  But, I just like the looks of them — they aren’t an SUV or even a mini-SUV, but they have some of the qualities of an SUV.  My rationale is that I’d have more room for the girls to ride around with me and travel with me, my Mom would be more comfortable riding in it when she visits (and if I ever succeed in getting her to come live with me), and there’s room to haul stuff!  But — is all that REALLY worth not having the pony to enjoy?

Then, I start to rationalize having TWO cars — keep the pony (after all, there are no payments associated with it) to use for pleasure AND get a used version of the other to use when I need the other things that one can provide me!!!  But, do I really want to get back into having a car payment after all this time without one???  And I’d have to pay for TWO registrations and TWO insurance policies and fill TWO gas tanks and……….!!!!  Is it all worth it???

I am really hoping that putting my thoughts down here finally gets them out of my brain and helps me move on…….I am NOT parting with my precious pony, so why keep teasing myself with other options — it is done — end of story!!!  Right???  Right!!!  OK……let’s get on with the day and stop these crazy thoughts!

Lie To Me and other thoughts

Lie To Me - the Fox TV show – is interesting, infuriating, irritating, and intriguing all at the same time!  I love the concept and the story lines.  Watching how they determine if someone is lying by watching them in both every day situations and under pressure is so interesting.  I can’t stop watching it – even though I can not stand the main character!!!  Dr. Cal Lightman, played by Tim Roth, is the single most irritating person to watch in the entire world!  I have never seen him in any other role (not that I remember, anyway), so I don’t know if he is putting this all on for this one character or if he typically acts this way.  He just gives me the heebie jeebies (yes, that is a technical term)!  For instance:   he walks and stands like he’s about to pass out drunk - all the time – he weaves around and looks like a limp dish rag ready to slump into a pile on the floor.  And then there is the revolting facial expressions – when he is watching and talking to someone he curls his upper lip up like a dog that is snarling, furls his brow, and gets a disgusted look on his face that make him look like he is about to throw up.  And he always gets right up within an inch of the other person’s face - back off a little, for criminy sake!  He can’t sit like a normal adult human being in any chair, he always looks like a bum even in a suit, and he usually holds his head sideways to look at people – like that gives him a better advantage!  I just find him so irritating!  But……I can’t wait until next week’s episode – right after House – another odd character, but at least House is one I love to hate and doesn’t make my skin crawl!

Speaking of TV — at the beginning of the season, I wrote a post about the shows that I was most excited about – click here to read it.  So, what happened to the line up?

  • Of the new ones, only two became hits – Blue Bloods and The Defenders - both of which I am still faithfully watching every week!
  • My favorite is Blue Bloods – I love tuning in to the Reagan family each week to see their closeness and their struggles.  I love that every week there is at least one scene where the entire family – 4 generations of Reagans – sit together around the table for a meal and discussion – even if it does sometimes get heated.
  • The Defenders is good, too – definitely one I enjoy watching – love Jim Belushi!!!
  • Outlaw was on its last leg and has been banished to Saturday night – which I hope is a good move that might revitalize it!  I really enjoy that show and will be sad if it goes away.
  • Chase is still on, but I’ve heard that it may not last – I like it and watch it every week, but wouldn’t be lost if it doesn’t make it.
  • It looks like The Whole Truth is gone – I haven’t seen it on in a couple of weeks and a search on TV Guide.com doesn’t bring up any scheduled episodes.  That was a good show – not great, but good.  I liked that it always ended with a scene that closed the loop and told the viewers the real truth — whether the guilty/not guilty verdict was the right one!
  • Lone Star is history – I never bothered to watch the one episode I had on my DVR, so I don’t know if I would have liked it or not.

My complaint about the networks is that they don’t give shows a chance to gain an audience — one week into the season and they are already talking about which ones they are going to cancel because they didn’t get the ratings out of the gate!  There are so many new and returning shows that you can’t watch them all the first week or two.  With the DVR, DVD, HULU, etc. available, people typically watch one the night it is aired and catch the others they are interested in later – doesn’t mean they aren’t getting watched and enjoyed!  Anyway — I hope Outlaw gets a shot in the arm from being moved to Saturday and hangs around – I like it!  If not, I’ll stick with Blue Bloods and The Defenders and a couple returning hits as my must see shows and flip around when they aren’t on to find something else that catches my eye.

Off the TV topic and on to my beautiful Katie!

She hasn’t been feeling too good lately – kinda blah and sluggish!  She had an allergic reaction to something and we had to treat her with antibiotics and prednisone for that.  Then we found she has some gunk going on in her ears, so we’re doing drops and washes for that.  And during all that we found out she has a thyroid problem, so she’ll be on meds for that the rest of her life!  She’s on the brink of her senior years – she’ll be 7 in April – so she also has some joint pain, too!  Poor old girl – gotta get her straightened up so she can be her sweet, perky, friendly self again – SOON!

And now I’ve said all I have to say for this morning and I’m getting off this computer and getting on with my day….
